On September 21st last Professor Dr. E. D. van Oort died at Leiden rather suddenly. For a considerable time his health had, indeed, been indifferent; on frequent occasions he had been unwell for shorter or longer periods, and in the spring of this year he was even obliged to apply for a four months' leave of absence. When after the expiry of this period, apparently recovered, he resumed his work, be it only for a few hours daily, we fostered the hope to have him among us for many years to come. Fate, however, decided differently. On Thursday morning he came to the museum, feeling better than on the previous days; he received the visitors cheerfully, and left the building past noon. Three hours later death had overtaken him. Eduard Daniel van Oort was born... |

Between 1874 and 1877 the marquis L. de Folin and F. Bérillon published several papers on the non-marine mollusks of the southwesternmost part of France. In this series of papers, for obscure reasons published under three different headings, various new nominal molluscan taxa are introduced. Their correct citing and dating is important therefore. Because these data cannot be found in the literature, we considered it useful to summarize the results of our bibliographical investigations. As a by-product of our studies some notes are given concerning certain papers by De Folin alone and a contribution which is attributable to Barrois. De Folin & Bérillon (1874-1877) published their "Catalogue", "Etudes" and "Contributions" in two journals, which are not... |

Introduction. — By far the most important and fundamental carcinological publication of the first half of the 19th century unquestionably is Henri Milne Edwards's (1834-1840) "Histoire naturelle des Crustacés", which treated all species of Crustacea known at that time in an exceedingly clear and comprehensive manner. The work was published in three volumes of text and one atlas. The dates of publication of it have never caused any difficulty. It was generally accepted that volume I was published in 1834, volume II in 1837, and volume III in 1840. These dates have never been challenged, and on closer examination indeed prove to be correct. About the date or dates of the atlas authors were vague and usually cited 1834-1840, or 1840, or they cited the atlas... |

New records of Alcyoniidae for Ambon are given and one new species, Sinularia slieringsi, is described and figured. Specimens of S. capitalis (Pratt, 1903), S. flexibilis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1833), S. hirta (Pratt, 1903), S. muralis May, 1899, and S. procera Verseveldt, 1977, are discussed. |

We provide a brief overview of the history of the journal Contributions to Zoology and analyse the papers published in the last 27 years by topic. Founded in 1848 as ‘Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde’, 160 years and 76 volumes later it is one of the oldest zoological journals that is still regularly printed. Over the last decades most papers dealt with invertebrates (60%), followed by vertebrates (23%), insects (10%) and non-taxonomic papers. Contributions to Zoology has seen a change from a largely alpha taxonomic journal to one that is truly general in scope. Systematic Biology and Comparative Morphology of both extant and extinct taxa nowadays make up about half of the papers published. Ethology as a research subject has been gradually phased out, and judged... |

Ornithologists have named many birds after their discoverers, collectors or others they wished to honour. However, it is sometimes not clear exactly whom the person commemorated is; sometimes there is merely a mention of Mr. X. without any initial, at other times no individual is mentioned at all. (O. E. Wynne, Biographical key — Names of birds of the world — to authors and those commemorated. 1969). MR. CHARLES FRANÇ OIS MIRANDOLLE In 1862 beschreef Hermann Schlegel in „Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle des Pays Bas — Revue méthodique et critique des collections déposées dans cet établissement" (hierna kortheidshalve „Revue méthodique" genoemd) een roofvogel uit Suriname onder de naam Astur mirandollei (thans Micrastur mirandollei (Schlegel)). Een vrijwel... |

INTRODUCTION The present note is the result of an investigation into the correct date of publication of the third volume of A. Seba's great work "Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri. ..". In my own studies on Crustacea I accepted the year 1761 as correct, following in this Engelmann (1846) and the title page of the copy of Seba's book that I consulted. Dr. M. Boeseman, ichthyologist of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, pointed out to me that in ichthyological literature the year of publication of this volume is practically always cited as 1758. Also Engel (1937) in his biography of Seba gave this later date. In trying to straighten this question out I obtained the most cordial help from Dr. Boeseman, Prof. Dr. H. Engel, former director of the... |

INTRODUCTION In the archives of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden there is a map with three letters written by Alexander von Humboldt (17691859) to the first director of the Museum, Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778-1858). The map, the hard cover of John Gould's "Synopsis of the birds of Australia" (April 1837), bears the handwritten caption "correspondentie von Humboldt" (correspondence von Humboldt). Besides the letters of von Humboldt, the map contains three concepts of letters written by C. J. Temminck to A. von Humboldt. These letters were probably not the sole contacts that von Humboldt and Temminck ever had, for as early as 1790 von Humboldt already visited the Temminck family in Amsterdam. It is likely that there have been more... |

Gustav Albert Stiasny was born in Vienna (Austria) on December 10th, 1877. After he had attended the elementary and grammar schools there and having finished a one year course of lectures in commercial enterprise, Stiasny enlisted as a volunteer with the Austro-Hungarian army. A year later he left the army after he had obtained his commission, to take up an appointment with his father's commercial business. Young Stiasny, who was much interested in Natural History, soon left his father's affairs to give himself completely to the study of Zoology, Botany and Geology. For that purpose he attended lectures at the universities of Vienna and Jena. As about that time such celebrities as Hatschek, Grobben, Haeckel, et al., were lecturing there it is no wonder... |

I. Historical. In the first half of the previous century the Netherlands government took a great interest in stimulating the scientific exploration of the Netherlands East Indies. In 1820 a "Natuurkundige Commissie voor Nederlandsch-Indië" (Natural History Commission for the Netherlands Indies; hereafter indicated as "Indies Commission") was installed and given the task to travel in the Dutch possessions in the East Indies with the object to extend the scientific knowledge of the natural productions of that region. The Indies Commission, which existed from 29 April 1820 to 17 April 1850, consisted of the following scientists (the dates behind the names indicate the time spent in the Indies as member of the Commission, the end of the stay marked with a † if... |
