Terrestrial isopods of the Ooijpolder: part 1. distribution (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscidea) The distributions and habitats of woodlice were investigated in ‘the Ooijpolder’, also named ‘the Ooij’. The area of approximately 41 square kilometers is located along the river Waal, east of Nijmegen, Province of Gelderland, The Netherlands (fig. 2). In total 1464 squares of 100 x 100 m (utm) (fig. 9) were sampled by hand from 1991 up to 1998 (Table 1). On a recording form (fig. 5) five first order habitats were distinguished (Table 2): 1. The river foreland is flooded on average for a few weeks once every winter or spring, and is bounded by a winterdyke. 2. The sandy river dunes in the flood plains are inundated only very occasionally. Three old brickstone... |

The bivalves of the Noordzeekanaal (Mollusca: Bivalvia) In recent years, the macrobenthos of the Noordzeekanaal area, west of Amsterdam, has been surveyed intensively. The area consists of a main, brackish channel and a set of deep sea harbours. It was discovered that several bivalve species were present in large numbers. Many findings came as a surprise. Especially noteworthy is the presence of a (formerly unknown) sizeable population of lagoon cockle Cerastoderma glaucum. This species has only a sparce distribution in the Netherlands (and surrounding countries). Also, the sand gaper Mya arenaria was found to be remarkably common in many places. The false dark mussel Mytilopsis leucophaeata was already known to be abundant on stony substrate... |

I was strongly impressed by the striking resemblance between the ascidian genera Ciallusia Van Name, 1918 and Pterygascidia Sluiter, 1904 when in 1957 I examined some specimens of Ciallusia longa Van Name, 1918, collected from Philippine waters and deposited at the United States National Museum (Tokioka, 1967: 136). C. longa is closely related with Pterygascidia mirabilis Sluiter, 1904, collected from off Timor by the Siboga Expedition, in general appearance of the pedunculate body, situation of the branchial and atrial apertures, structure of the branchial siphon, arrangement of body muscles divided into parts, and in the essential structure of the branchial sac, alimentary canal and gonads. The former, however, seemed to differ distinctly from the latter... |

In 1875 K. Möbius described a new species of Chaetognatha under the name Sagitta hamata. Hertwig (1880) used the name Spadella hamata for it; Strodtmann (1892) called it Krohnia hamata and finally Von RitterZáhony (1909c) gave it the name Eukrohnia hamata. In this "Research" material Fowler (1905) found a few specimens of E. hamata which did not entirely agree with all the characters of Möbius's species; he regarded these specimens a separate variety, which he indicated as Krohnia hamata Möbius var. Von Ritter-Záhony (1909c) gave the name Eukrohnia fowleri to this form. In the material collected by the "Siboga" Expedition Fowler (1906) found only what he thought to be Krohnia hamata. He stated that none of the specimens was actually well preserved, but... |

Herrn Professor Dr. Boschma zum 70. Geburtstag freundlichst gewidmet. |

The aim of this paper is to bring to light Aristotle’s knowledge of marine invertebrate diversity as this has been recorded in his works 25 centuries ago, and set it against current knowledge. The analysis of information derived from a thorough study of his zoological writings revealed 866 records related to animals currently classified as marine invertebrates. These records corresponded to 94 different animal names or descriptive phrases which were assigned to 85 current marine invertebrate taxa, mostly (58%) at the species level. A detailed, annotated catalogue of all marine anhaima (a = without, haima = blood) appearing in Aristotle’s zoological works was constructed and several older confusions were clarified. Some of Aristotle’s “genera” were found to... |

The significance of nature friendly banks for the aquatic invertebrate fauna The last 25 years the Ministry of Transport constructed more than 450 km of nature friendly banks along their waters to compensate the destruction of nature by defending the banks with stone and steel. In this study the differences in the composition of the aquatic invertebrate fauna between the traditional banks and the nature friendly banks was investigated. In nature friendly banks the number of species, diversity and the number of rare species increases and the distribution of the feeding guilds is more natural. |

The distribution of the land snails of the province of Zeeland, with special emphasis on Vertigo angustior (Mollusca: Gastropoda) In 2005 the land snail fauna of the coast of the province of Zeeland was mapped. In total 98 soil and litter samples were taken and on 54 localities records were gathered on sight. In total 55 land snail species were found, eight of which are on the Dutch red list. Five species, Helicodiscus singleyanus, Boetgerilla pallens, Cernuella cisalpina, Paralaoma servilis and Balea heydeni, were recorded for the first time in the province of Zeeland. Vertigo angustior was rediscovered on most of the known sites and was recorded at several new sites. |

Does the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis feel well in the Netherlands (Hirudinea)? This paper provides information on the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis Linnaeus, 1758 particularly in The Netherlands. Although this species was common in The Netherlands in the 18th century, nowadays it is very rare. Most animals were found in waters on sandy soil (71%): dune pools (10%) and pleistocene sandy areas (61%), where it inhabits especially soft water moor and heathland pools. About 20% of the records originate from river areas, where the species can be found in breakthrough ponds and oxbow lakes. Only 9% of the records are from fen and clay areas. Records of single specimens are not proof of an established population, because these specimens could also... |

INTRODUCTION Two years ago I found two specimens of a curious animal in a sample of coral sand from Curaçao. It superficially resembled the larva of priapulids, animals that are restricted to cold water. The condition of the specimens did not permit of a description and I did not succeed in determining the group to which the species could possibly belong. Later I happened to see a paper by Remane (1963) in which he gives a simple figure of "a not yet described animal from the sandy bottom of the Red Sea". I immediately recognized it as a relative of the species from Curaçao. Upon request Professor Remane informed me that he had fixed some specimens, but that these were lost. He had not found more material of the species and he had not heard of these... |

The ichnotaxon Teredolites Leymerie, 1842, represented by T. longissimus Kelly & Bromley, 1984, is documented for the first time from the Lesser Antilles. Its occurrence also represents the first record of the ichnotaxon from the Miocene of the Caribbean. Five specimens, each occurring in isolation without an enclosing xylic (wood) substrate, but merely calcite-lined tubes, occur in the Miocene Grand Bay Formation of Carriacou, the Grenadines, Lesser Antilles. Stratinomic considerations suggest that following physical destruction or biological decomposition of their enclosing substrate(s), the tubes may have accumulated in relatively shallow water only to be subsequently resedimented into a deeperwater (> 150 m) environment. |
