[Proceedings of the 5th Symposium on Mesozoic and Cenozoic Decapod Crustaceans, Krakow, Poland, 2013: A tribute to Pál Mihály Müller / R.H.B. Fraaije, M. Hyžný, J.W.M. Jagt, M. Krobicki & B.W.M. van Bakel (eds.)]: A new species of icriocarcinid crab (Crustacea, Portunoidea) from the uppermost Cretaceous of California, USA: palaeobiogeographic implications Naturalis
Nyborg, T.; Ossó, A.; Vega, F.J..
A new species of icriocarcinid crab, Branchiocarcinus pacificus, is described from the uppermost Cretaceous Moreno Formation of California; in addition, an indeterminate species of the same genus is recorded from the Campanian of Hornby Island, Vancouver Island, Canada. The wide distribution of the Icriocarcinidae during the Late Cretaceous is confirmed.

Krobicki & B.W.M. van Bakel (eds.)]: Pristinaspinidae, a new family of Cretaceous kiwaiform stem-lineage squat lobster (Anomura, Chirostyloidea) Naturalis
Ahyong, S.T.; Roterman, C.N..
The chirostyloid squat lobster Pristinaspina gelasina from the Upper Cretaceous of Alaska is most closely related to members of the genus Kiwa (Kiwaidae) as indicated by the presence of supraocular spines, a medially carinate rostrum and similar carapace groove patterns. Evidence from morphology, stratigraphic position and molecular divergence estimates of extant chirostyloids supports its position in the stem of Kiwaidae. Pristinaspina, however, also differs significantly from kiwaids and is here assigned to a new family, Pristinaspinidae. The chief distinction between the free-living pristinaspinids and vent- or seep-associated kiwaids (and an important synapomorphy of the latter) is the enlargement of the metabranchial regions in kiwaids, which meet in...

A new species of Sulcia Kratochvil (Araneida, Leptoneptidae) from Greece, and a discussion of some Japanese Cavernicolous Leptonetidae Naturalis
Deeleman-Reinhold, C.L..
A NEW SPECIES OF SULCIA In 1962, Dresco described the first representative of the genus Sulcia from the Greek mainland, Sulcia lindbergi. Recently, Brignoli (1968a) considered this species a subspecies of Sulcia cretica Fage. The genus is also known from Dalmatia, Hercegovina, Montenegro, and some adjacent islands (Kratochvil, 1938) and from the Island of Crete (Fage, 1945). In January 1969, my husband P. R. Deeleman, had the opportunity to visit the Koutouki Cave near the village of Ljopessi (officially also called Peania), situated at approximately 20 km west of Athens. This visit was made possible by the assistance of Mrs. A. Petrochilos and Mr. A. Kanellis, to whom we feel very much obliged. In this cave a new species of Sulcia was collected. The cave...

Revision of the Genus Heterometrus Hemprich & Ehrenberg (Scorpionidae, Arachnidea) Naturalis
Couzijn, H.W.C..
The author deals with taxonomy, character variation, phylogeny and biogeography of Heterometrus, a scorpion genus occurring in Southeast Asia. The taxonomic value of 131 characters is studied, including 75 biometric ones; 72 characters are selected to be used in the present revision for purposes of classification. In the numerical analysis and in the study of descriptive characters, specimens are clustered polythetically; this method allows variation as observed in the taxa, the sharing of the total set of taxon characteristics not being absolutely required. A total of 21 species (4 new) and 31 subspecies (16 new) are discriminated, classified in five subgenera, two of which are new. The African genus Pandinus Thorell is found to be the sistergroup of...

Defensive enrolment in mantis shrimp larvae (Malacostraca: Stomatopoda) Naturalis
Haug, C.; Haug, J.T..
We describe a possible new defensive behaviour of larval stages of mantis shrimps (Stomatopoda). Mantis shrimp larvae are rarely observed in nature, thus the study is based on postures of museum material and functional morphological aspects. Specimens described here are tightly enrolled, their pleon is bent forward, and the telson is locked into the frontal margin of the shield. This margin has two lobes into which the two posterolateral spines of the telson fit. The shield shows further adaptions to enrolment; e.g., the ventral gape of the shield perfectly matches the width of the pleon and leaves no major gaps when the pleon is bent forward. Based on these observations, we briefly discuss the possibilities to infer behavioural aspects from functional...

Comparative studies in Chelicerata IV. Apatellata, Arachnida, Scorpionida, Xiphosura Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A comparative study is made of four chelicerate classes: Apatellata (Solifugae and Pseudoscorpionida), Arachnida s. str. (both groups of Uropygi, i.e. Holopeltida and Schizomida, Amblypygi and Araneida), Scorpionida and Xiphosura. Methods, principles and terminology, adopted in this paper, correspond with those of parts I -111 of the present series of comparative studies in Chelicerata. Special attention is paid to segmentation of the body, respiratory organs, orifices of coxal glands, mouthparts, and appendages. The evolution of these structures is studied, and the relationships of the chelicerate classes and subclasses are reinvestigated and discussed.

The Lycosidae and Pisauridae (Araneae) of the Netherlands Naturalis
Wiebes, J.T..
INTRODUCTION In this paper the species of spiders belonging to the families Lycosidae and Pisauridae, known from the Netherlands, are described and figured. In addition a number of species, which possibly may occur in the Netherlands though they have not yet been found here hitherto, are mentioned in the keys. In order to make the keys useful also for identifying immature specimens, I have based these keys not only on the well-known differential characters in the adult sexual organs, but also, as far as possible, on characters derived from colour-pattern and chaetotaxy. The system of notation, used to indicate the situation of the spines on palps and legs, is briefly stated as follows (Wiebes, 1956, pp. 408, 409) : d, 1', 1", v', and v" indicate dorsal,...

Terrestrial amphipoda collected in greenhouses in the Netherlands Naturalis
Vader, W..
During the years 1942-1949 investigations were made on the fauna of the greenhouses of several Botanic Gardens in the Netherlands, on the initiative of Dr. A. D. J. Meeuse; material was also collected in greenhouses belonging to other institutions and in those kept for commercial purposes. A list of publications based on the results of these investigations has been given by Van der Hammen (1969). In a number of greenhouses the terrestrial amphipod, Talitroides alluaudi (Chevreux), was collected. This paper reviews the distribution of this species in Dutch greenhouses, and gives a survey of the occurrence of terrestrial species or the genus Talitroides in Europe. The genus Talitroides was erected by Bonnier (1898) for a species later named T. bonnieri by...

Is Meta mengei Blackwall a variety of Meta segmentata (Clerck) ? (Aranei-Argiopidae) Naturalis
Chrysanthus, Fr..
Since 1870 it has been a matter of debate among araneologists whether Meta mengei, described by Blackwall in that year, and separated by him from Meta segmentata (Clerck, 1757), is a real species or only a variety. In order to find an answer to this question I give an historical survey of the views of the most important authors concerning this matter, followed by a discussion of the peculiarities generally regarded as characters distinguishing the two species or varieties, and a short account of my own investigations. 1757. Clerck figures and describes a species of spiders of which in the beginning of September he observed a great number ; he names it (Araneus) segmentatus. 1758. Linnaeus publishes a concise description of the same species and names it...

Cylisticus convexus, een in Nederland zeldzame synantrope landpissebed (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscoidea) Naturalis
Berg, M.P.; Wijnhoven, H.; Tempelman, D..
Cylisticus convexus, a rare synanthropic woodlouse in The Netherlands (Crustacea: Isopoda: Cylisticidae) Until recently, the occurrence of Cylisticus convexus (De Geer, 1778) in the Netherlands was uncertain. The only certain old record dates from March 1927, when the species was collected at the coal-shed of the Zoological Museum at Amsterdam. During the last years, two specimens have been collected on semi-natural sites. Both were found on a dike, one near Everdingen, in the province of Gelderland, and one near Ritthem, in the province of Zeeland. These are the first records of C. convexus in the field. Yet the species certainly is very rare in The Netherlands. The most important morphological characteristics of the species are described and...

Two new genera and three new species of subterranean cyclopoids (Crustacea, Copepoda) from New Zealand, with redescription of Goniocyclops silvestris Harding, 1958 Naturalis
Karanovic, T..
A small collection of copepod samples from several wells in the Canterbury region, South Island, was examined. It contained a few cosmopolitan cyclopoid species, three interesting harpacticoids, as well as two new cyclopoid genera. The latter are presented in this paper, together with a redescription and first description of the male of Goniocyclops silvestris Harding, 1958, a cyclopoid species previously known only from North Island. Both new genera are from the Diacyclops-Acanthocyclops complex. Abdiacyclops gen. nov. is easily distinguishable from the complex by its unique swimming legs segmentation formula (2/2, 3/3, 3/3, 3/3), and is so far monospecific and known only after females. The most important characters of the second new genus, Zealandcyclops...
