Genetic control of partial resistance to Asian soybean rust doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v36i1.16919 1
Martins, Juliana Araújo Santos; Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Triângulo Mineiro; Juliatti, Fernando Cezar; Universidade Federal de Uberlandia.
The genetic control of rust resistance was studied using the Caiapônia x IAC-100 and Luziânia x Potenza crosses. The F2 and F3 generations were evaluated. Rust severity was quantified through visual assessment of the middle third of three leaflets per plant and performed by three different evaluators; the average score was calculated foreach individual plant. From these data, we estimated the mean and variance of the genetic components by employing the weighted least squares method. The estimated number of genes and broad- and narrow-sense heritabilities were also obtained. It was concluded that rust resistance is a characteristic controlled by 2 to 23 genes that are predominantly dominant. The estimate of narrow-sense heritability was greater than 70% for...

Pompeu, Danielle da Silva; Guedes, Terezinha Aparecida; Janeiro, Vanderly; Gonçalves-Zuliane, Aline Maria Orbolato; Nunes, William Mario de Carvalho; Carneiro, José Walter Pedroza.
Citrus canker, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri, is one of the most important diseases of citrus. The use of resistant genotypes plays an important role in the management and control of the disease and is the most environmentally sustainable approach to disease control. Citrus canker incidence was recorded in an experiment on nine genotypes of the sweet orange variety ‘Pera’ grafted on four rootstocks. The experiment was started in 2010 and the incidence of citrus canker on the leaves was recorded on a quarterly basis. The incidence data from the experiment were analyzed using a zero-inflated Beta regression model (RBIZ), which is the appropriate method to describe data with large numbers of zeros. Based on the residual analysis, the...

Cunha, Dênis Antônio da; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Coelho, Alexandre Bragança; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Féres, José Gustavo; Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada; Braga, Marcelo José; Universidade Federal de Viçosa.
http://dx.doi.org/10.4025/actasciagron.v36i1.15375The aim of this paper is to analyse the effects of climate change on irrigation adoption in Brazil. Temperature and precipitation projections for the 2010-2099 periods were employed under a number of different climate scenarios according the 4th Assessment Report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The results show that irrigation adoption will be affected by climate change. Given current conditions, irrigation has generally been adopted in Brazil to cope with reduced precipitation and temperature variations. The estimated irrigation probabilities in the future scenarios were quite different across Brazilian regions. The main explanation for this pattern is the distinct climatic conditions...

Pochonia chlamydosporia promotes the growth of tomato and lettuce plants 1
Dallemole-Giaretta, Rosangela; Freitas, Leandro Grassi de; Lopes, Everaldo Antonio; Silva, Marliane de Cássia Soares da; Kasuya, Maria Catarina Megumi; Ferraz, Silamar.
The fungus Pochonia chlamydosporia is one of the most studied biological agents used to control plant-parasitic nematodes. This study found that the isolates Pc-3, Pc-10 and Pc-19 of this fungus promote the growth of tomato and lettuce seedlings. The isolate Pc-19 colonized the rhizoplane of tomato seedlings in only 15 days and produced a large quantity of chlamydospores. This isolate was able to use cellulose as a carbon source, in addition to glucose and sucrose. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that hyphae of the P. chlamydosporia isolate Pc-10 penetrated the epidermal cells of the tomato roots. These three P. chlamydosporia isolates promote the growth of tomato and lettuce.

The objective of this work was to study and model the drying process of corn ears at different air temperatures. Thermodynamic properties associated with the drying process of this product were also determined. Corn ears with initial moisture content of 0.45 dry basis (kgw kgdm-1) were dried until they reached a final moisture content of 0.12 (kgw kgdm-1) at temperatures of 45, 55 and 65°C. Traditional models used to describe the drying process of several agricultural products were employed to fit the observed data of the drying process of corn ears. The effective diffusion coefficient (Def) was determined by means of an analytical solution of Fick’s second law. It was concluded that the Logarithmic model was the one that best fit the observed data...

Data transformation: an underestimated tool by inappropriate use 1
Ribeiro-Oliveira, João Paulo; Santana, Denise Garcia de; Pereira, Vanderley José; Santos, Carlos Machado dos.
There are researchers who do not recommend data transformation arguing it causes problems in inferences and mischaracterises data sets, which can hinder interpretation. There are other researchers who consider data transformation necessary to meet the assumptions of parametric models. Perhaps the largest group of researchers who make use of data transformation are concerned with experimental accuracy, which provokes the misuse of this tool. Considering this, our paper offer a study about the most frequent situations related to data transformation and how this tool can impact ANOVA assumptions and experimental accuracy. Our database was obtained from measurements of seed physiology and seed technology. The coefficient of variation cannot be used as an...
