Amoxicillin-sulbactam (AMX-SUL) is an aminopenicillin/ß-lactamase inhibitor combination currently available in 29 countries and may be a suitable option for treating infections caused by Acinetobacter spp. Thus, we sought to search the optimal dosing strategy for this formulation through an ex vivo pharmacodynamic human model against Acinetobacter baumanniii. Four volunteers were randomized to receive alternatively a single dose AMX-SUL infused both either over 30 min or 3h at the following ratios (g/g): 1/0.5; 1/1, and 0/2. Time-kill studies were performed with the 0-, 0.5-, 2-, 4-, 6- and 8-h sera after dose against a clinical isolate of A. baumannii (sulbactam MIC, 4µg/mL). Bactericidal activity (i.e. a mean decrease >3 log10 CFU/mL in the viable... |

Abstract Acinetobacter baumannii is a frequently isolated etiologic agent of nosocomial infections, especially in intensive care units. With the increase in multi-drug resistance of A. baumannii isolates, finding appropriate treatment alternatives for infections caused by these bacteria has become more difficult, and available alternate treatments include the use of older antibiotics such as colistin or a combination of antibiotics. The current study aimed to evaluate the in vitro efficacy of various antibiotic combinations against multi-drug resistant A. baumannii strains. Thirty multi-drug and carbapenem resistant A. baumannii strains isolated at the Ankara Training and Research Hospital between June 2011 and June 2012 were used in the study. Antibiotic... |

ABSTRACT: Goat’s milk has been suggested as an alternative to cow’s milk, being a better digestible and hypoallergenic option. However, the presence of contaminating bacteria may significantly affect the safety of the product. In this research, we reported the isolation and characterization of Acinetobacter spp. isolates from raw goat milk samples purchased in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Twenty-one samples were analyzed and ten isolates of Acinetobacter spp. were obtained. Six were identified as A. guillouiae, three as A. ursingii, and one as A. bereziniae. These isolates were characterized and eight showed proteolytic activity, seven showed lipolytic activity, and five isolates were able to produce both enzymes. None of the isolates was biofilm... |

Teflon dialysis sampling chambers have been employed to study the toxicity of ZnCl sub(2) on a cadmium-sensitive bacterium, Acinetobacter) CS 13, in an aquarium with running seawater. A concentration of 10 mg Zn super(++) l super(-1) did not influence the cell densities in the chambers, but cell densities decreased at zinc concentrations of 15 and 20 mg l super(-1). In seawater with 20 mg Zn super(++) lu-1 the bacteria accumulated zinc from 827 to 2813 mu g g super(-1) cells dry wt after 1 d. After 2 d the zinc concentration increased to 4625 mu g g super(-1) dry wt. Three chambers were filled with Acinetobacter CS 13 cells added to sterile sediment at a concentration of 1 x 10 super(8) cells ml super(-1) wet sediment. To test the security, these chambers... |
