L'agrégation de thons de sub-surface au sein du système [DCP ancré - macronecton - environnement - pêche] en Martinique : étude hiérarchique par méthodes acoustiques, optiques et halieutiques ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu.
Artificial Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) are known to concentrate tropical tunas. This aggregative behaviour drastically increases the vulnerability of these species to fishing. Alternatively, FADs can be used as oceanic observatories to study the aggregative behaviour of large pelagic fish. We conducted sea surveys in Martinique (Lesser Antilles) to i) establish a typology of the pelagic fish aggregations found around moored FADs ii) study their relations with their biotic and abiotic environment and the local fishery. The mean biomass of large pelagic fish aggregations was also estimated to provide scientific inputs to achieve a sustainable management of the moored FAD fishery. The first part presents the background of the study. We introduce the...

Les couches diffusantes du golfe de Gascogne : caractérisation acoustique, composition spécifique et distribution spatiale ArchiMer
Remond, Barbara.
Fisheries acoustic data are continuously collected during ecosystemic surveys to detect sh schools of commercial species and to quantify the sh abundance. These multifrequency data also contain information about smaller target aggregations producing ubiquitous Sound Scat- tering Layers (SSLs) on the echograms, with quite diverse shape, frequency responses and taxonomic compositions. In this work, we focus on the SSLs observed in spring in the Bay of Biscay during the PELGAS surveys. The objectives are: i) to classify SSLs, ii) to describe their spatial meso-scale distribution, iii) to investigate their relationships with oher exosystme components, and iv) to investigate the taxonomic composition of resonant SSLs at ne scale. A Multiple Correspondence...

Correction on school geometry and density: approach based on acoustic image simulation ArchiMer
Diner, Noel.
Models of simulated schools have been used to determine the intrinsic variability in echotraces due to beam pattern effect. This work concerns only morphometric and energetic parameters that can be extracted from echotraces. It appears that dST, the difference between school density and processing threshold is a key parameter, which directly influences the concerned detection angles. Relations, taking into account dST but also, Nbi, the relative school length image compared to the beam width, have been settled for the calculation of length and density corrections. In most cases, corrected values are obtained with errors less than respectively 5% for length and 0.5 dB for density (reverberation index), provided that the Nb-i value is 1.5 or more. When Nb-i...

Seafloor habitat definition for spatial management in fisheries: a case study on the continental shelf of southeast Australia ArchiMer
Bax, N; Kloser, R; Williams, A; Gowlett-holmes, K; Ryan, T.
The importance of habitat to Fisheries production on Australia's southeast continental shelf is part of a five-year study of ecosystem functioning and its implications for a sustainable fishery. Benthic habitats from 40 m to similar to 200 m were studied, based on identification of suitable sites from local fishers' information. Results presented here concentrate on data from a single mesohabitat at 40-60 m depth collected over two days. Macrohabitats within this mesohabitat were discriminated as soft, hard and rough from visual inspection of acoustic echograms. Subsequent analysis of the return echoes using roughness and hardness indices did not significantly improve real-time visual discriminations. Macrohabitats were sampled with an underwater video...

The French anchovy fishery ArchiMer
Duhamel, Erwan; Biseau, Alain; Masse, Jacques; Villalobos, Hector.
The french fishery of anchovy is divided in two groups defined by gears : purse seine and pelagic trawl. The average length of these vessels is about 20m. This fleet is very opportunistic : all trawlers are using several trawls during the year, to catch sometimes bass, tuna, hake, or scampi, and purse seine are mainly fishing sardine. Each year, the main anchovy catches are provided by pair trawlers. Purse seiners operate often in coastal areas (<10 nautical miles); trawlers may operate until 50 nautical miles offshore but are banned inside the three miles coastal zone. The pair trawlers may operate from Basque country to western Channel according to fish availability. Purse seiners usually stay around their home harbour.

Interaction between fish and fishing vessels in the Javanese purse seine fishery ArchiMer
Potier, Michel; Petitgas, Pierre; Petit, Didier.
The purse-seiners of the Java Sea use light and fish aggregating devices (FAD) to concentrate and catch small pelagic fish (Decapterus sp., Amblygaster sirm, Sardinella gibbosa). This sets a question about the interaction between fish and fishing vessels. Relevant estimates of fishing mortality and fishing effort require an understanding of this interaction. To gain information on this relationship, acoustic surveys were performed on the fishing grounds and the present paper analyses these data. Using acoustic surveys, the fish density was measured and the number of schools was counted per sea surface unit. The fishing vessels were located by radar. Acoustic data were stratified into two groups, one where fishing vessels were present and the other where...

Estimation de la précision des campagnes acoustiques au Sénégal par la méthode géostatistique transitive à une dimension ArchiMer
Samb, Birame; Petitgas, Pierre.
This study presents an application of the geostatistical one-dimensional (1D) transitive method for estimating the precision of acoustic pelagic abundance estimates in Senegal. In applying the method, the major problem encountered was how to take into account the temporal variability in the computation of the estimation variance. In acoustic surveys, echointegration is performed continuously along the ship's sailing track. For a survey design made of parallel transects, each transect can thus be considered as a sampling unit. By summing the density values along the transects to obtain biomass values per transect, the 2D estimation is simply reduced to a 1D estimation procedure. If the transects are equidistant, the geostatistical transitive method applied...

Sardine series in PELGAS surveys : PELGAS 2000 to 2005 ArchiMer
Masse, Jacques; Duhamel, Erwan; Delaunay, Damien.
Survey data from 2000 to 2004 were used to analyse whether sardine show a preferential distribution in relation to bottom depth and/or latitude. For this analysis, four strata were considered; North or South of latitude 46°N (separating VIIIa and VIIIb) and bottom depths deeper or shallower than 110m. Sardine length distributions are plotted as the proportion of small (< 18.5 cm) or big (larger than 18.5 cm) fish on the samples over the years. This division was chosen to take into account the bimodal structure of sardine length distributions (usually with a "valley" at 18.5 cm fish length). Small fish (mainly 1 year old) are generally found close to the coast and preferentially in the southern part. The year 2003 is different to the others but this year...
