Expression of mdr isoforms in mice during estrous cycle and under hormone stimulation Genet. Mol. Biol.
Schiengold,Marion; Schwantes,Lavínia; Ribeiro,Maria F.; Lothhammer,Nívia; Gonzalez,Tatiana P.; Chies,Jose Artur Bogo; Nardi,Nance B..
The multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype is associated with the expression of P-glycoprotein (Pgp), coded by the multigenic mdr family. Mice present the isoforms mdr1 and mdr3, which are responsible for multidrug resistance, and mdr2, that is involved in the transport of phospholipids. mdr1 expression has more recently been associated also with the secretion of steroid hormones. This work presents an RT-PCR analysis of the expression of mdr isoforms, in several organs of mice during different phases of the estrous cycle. Additionally, females were ovariectomized, submitted to different hormone treatments, and their uterus was analyzed for the expression of mdr isoforms. The results show that in the adrenal gland and ovaries mdr1 is the main isoform during...

A Novel Path of Communication from Kidney to the Adrenal Gland in Bactrian Camels (Camelus bactrianus) International Journal of Morphology
Ye,Wenling; Wang,Fengling; Lv,Shuangyu; Wang,Yange; Dong,Shuo; Wang,Jianlin.
The adrenal gland is an important endocrine organ in vertebratesthat produces a wide variety of hormones. The anatomical results showed that the adrenal gland in Bactrian camel had a typical blood supply and innervation. Surprisingly, we found that there was a novel connection mainly consisted of fibrous tissue, blood vessels and nerve bundles between the adrenal gland and the kidney in Bactrian camel, and we named it fibrous tissue-blood vessels-nerve bundles (FBN bundle). To the best of our knowledge, this FBN bundle was the first reported in Bactrian camel, and not yet observed in other animals. While, its functions and mechanisms should be studied further. We speculated that a direct function of this novel path might be to strengthen the communication...

Gross Anatomical Studies on the Adrenal Gland in Prenatal Goat (Capra hircus) International Journal of Morphology
Pathak,Satish K; Farooqui,M. M; Kumar,Prabhakar; Prakash,Ajay; Pathak,Archana; Singh,Dharmendra.
The present study was conducted on the 24 healthy and normal embryos/foeti of non- descript goat (Capra hircus) varying from day old to 150 days of gestation. The embryo/foeti were assigned into three groups according to their gestational ages; Groups I (0-50 days), II (51-100 days) and III (101-till term). At 38 days of gestation the primordia of right and left adrenal gland were observed as a pea shaped spherical swelling located just cranial to the respective metanephros. Biometrical studies revealed the increase in the all parameters of the adrenal gland with the advancement of age. Adrenal glands were harvested first grossly at 50 days of gestation.

Plasma metanephrines: a novel and cost-effective test for pheochromocytoma BJMBR
Eisenhofer,G.; Walther,M.; Keiser,H.R.; Lenders,J.W.M.; Friberg,P.; Pacak,K..
Pheochromocytomas are rare chromaffin cell tumors that nevertheless must be excluded in large numbers of patients who develop sustained or episodic hypertension as well as in many others with suggestive symptoms or with a familial history of pheochromocytoma. Diagnosis of pheochromocytoma depends importantly on biochemical evidence of excess catecholamine production by a tumor. Imperfect sensitivity and specificity of commonly available biochemical tests and the low incidence of the tumor among the tested population mean that considerable time and effort can be expended in confirming or ruling out pheochromocytoma in patients where the tumor is suspected. Measurements of plasma free metanephrines provide a superior test compared to other available tests...

A connection between extracellular matrix and hormonal signals during the development of the human fetal adrenal gland BJMBR
Chamoux,E.; Otis,M.; Gallo-Payet,N..
The human adrenal cortex, involved in adaptive responses to stress, body homeostasis and secondary sexual characters, emerges from a tightly regulated development of a zone-specific secretion pattern during fetal life. Its development during fetal life is critical for the well being of pregnancy, the initiation of delivery, and even for an adequate adaptation to extra-uterine life. As early as from the sixth week of pregnancy, the fetal adrenal gland is characterized by a highly proliferative zone at the periphery, a concentric migration accompanied by cell differentiation (cortisol secretion) and apoptosis in the central androgen-secreting fetal zone. After birth, a strong reorganization occurs in the adrenal gland so that it better fulfills the newborn's...

Detection of adrenocortical autoantibodies in Addison's disease with a peroxidase-labelled protein A technique BJMBR
Silva,R.C.; Faiçal,S.; Laureti,S.; Falorni,A.; Dib,S.A.; Kater,C.E..
Adrenocortical autoantibodies (ACA), present in 60-80% of patients with idiopathic Addison's disease, are conventionally detected by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) on frozen sections of adrenal glands. The large-scale use of IIF is limited in part by the need for a fluorescence microscope and the fact that histological sections cannot be stored for long periods of time. To circumvent these restrictions we developed a novel peroxidase-labelled protein A (PLPA) technique for the detection of ACA in patients with Addison's disease and compared the results with those obtained with the classical IIF assay. We studied serum samples from 90 healthy control subjects and 22 patients with Addison's disease, who had been clinically classified into two groups:...
