Considering the filtration capacity of mussels to qualitative particle selection, our study focused directly on ingested species by assessing mussel stomach content of various size classes (1-5 cm) over a year (August 97-June 98) rather than monitoring seawater samples. Different size of mussels (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 cm in length) was sampled monthly from the sides of fish cage floats in Urla-Izmir. Stomach contents were analyzed under microscope and different plankton species were grouped taxonomically. The upper similar to50 cm sediments in the deep-sea Aegean Sea were generally deposited through hemipelagic rain as indicated by paucity of terrigenous sand-sized particles, abundance of clay-sized materials and lack of turbiditic beds. However, quartz sand-sized grains, black debris, higher C org content and ON ratio attest to a significant river-borne supply in the North Aegean Trough. Anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus distribution in European waters spans from the Mediterranean Sea to the North Sea, and is expected to expand further north with global warming. Observations from the eastern Mediterranean (North Aegean Sea), the Bay of Biscay and the North Sea reveal latitudinal differences in growth, maximum size, fecundity and timing of reproduction. We set up a mechanistic framework combining a bioenergetics model with regional physical-biogeochemical models providing temperature and zooplankton biomass to investigate the underlying mechanisms of variation in these traits. The aim of the present study was to evaluate marine contamination and toxicity in sediment and pore water from the areas of Izmir Bay (Turkey) and Mytilene Harbor (Greece). The evaluation was performed in terms of selected toxic-metals, polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAR) and toxicity to sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus) early development and fertilization. Significantly higher levels of metals and total PAR were detected in Izmir vs. Mytilene sediment, and the highest contamination was detected in Izmir Bay innermost sites. The purpose of this study is to examine the Polychaetes populations of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck 1819 assemblage in Thessaloniki Bay (Perea, Neoi Epivates, Agia Triada) in space and time. Forty-eight Polychaetes species, which belong to 16 families, were identified among 10 593 individuals. The different distribution in space and time can be attributed to the life cycles of the Polychaetes, and also to the various biotic interactions. The aim of this paper is to bring to light Aristotle’s knowledge of marine invertebrate diversity as this has been recorded in his works 25 centuries ago, and set it against current knowledge. The analysis of information derived from a thorough study of his zoological writings revealed 866 records related to animals currently classified as marine invertebrates. These records corresponded to 94 different animal names or descriptive phrases which were assigned to 85 current marine invertebrate taxa, mostly (58%) at the species level.
