Agricultural Environmental Indicators: Using OECD Agri-Environmental Indicators to Assess New Zealand Kiwifruit Orchards AgEcon
Saunders, Caroline M.; Kaye-Blake, William; Campbell, Rachel; Benge, J..
Agri-environmental indicators (AEIs) developed by the OECD have been used to assess the environmental performance of the agricultural sector in developed countries. The Agricultural Research Group on Sustainability (ARGOS) in New Zealand has investigated using these AEIs to assess the performance of individual kiwifruit orchards. ARGOS is following panels of orchards to investigate the impacts of organic and conventional management systems on economic, sociological, and environmental dimensions of farming. The environmental monitoring of these orchards has provided data for calculating AEIs. The paper discusses the performance of ARGOS orchards, the impact of management systems, and the implications for future research.

Voluntary Agreements and the Environmental Efficiency of Participating Farms AgEcon
Roosen, Jutta; Ordonez, Andrea.
Voluntary environmental agreements have been popular with government agencies in several countries. However, many questions remain about their efficiency as a regulatory tool. Recent analyses suggest that they are more effective than conventional regulatory or economic approaches when dealing with diffuse pollution and when innovation processes at the source are necessary to define effective regulation. This paper applies an activity-based framework to assess the contribution of such a voluntary agreement to the environmental performance of farms participating in a whole farm plan in the Southern part of Belgium. Using a cross-section of 52 farms, our results show that farms entering into environmental agreements are environmentally more efficient than...

Indikatoren einer nachhaltigen Landwirtschaft im Regionalisierten Agrar- und Umweltinformationssystem für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland (RAUMIS) AgEcon
Julius, Christian; Moller, Christine; Osterburg, Bernhard; Sieber, Stefan.
According to the formulation of a political concept which centres on the principles of sustainable agricultural land use, agri-environmental aspects have gained an accretive importance within model based policy consultation. In this context, the following article illustrates the Regionalised Agricultural and Environmental Information System RAUMIS. It describes the state of development of the actual integration of agri-environmental indicators as well as analytical results and their applicatory suitability. The main intention of using indicators within RAUMIS is to achieve a differentiated illustration of environmental impacts of agricultural land use in the context of actual-state analysis and prospective simulations.

EU-wide spatial down-scaling of results of regional economic models to analyze environmental impacts AgEcon
Britz, Wolfgang.
Major environmental indicators require data at a spatial resolution below administrative units as found in economic models. The CAPRI-Dynaspat project added spatial results for EU27 to the CAPRI model allowing for linkage to bio-physical models and calculation of novel indicators. The layer consists of clusters of 1x1 km cells exhausting the agricultural area, uniform in soil parameters, slope class, land cover and administrative unit. Crop and irrigation shares, stocking densities and yields are estimated per cluster along with intermediate input demand including crop specific fertilizer application rates. Those estimates drive statistically estimated meta-models from the bio-physical crop growth model DNDC to derive the nitrogen and water cycle....
