Development of a Manually Operated Vertical Seed-Plate Maize Planter CIGR Journal
Soyoye, Babatunde Oluwamayokun; Ademosun, Olugboyega Cornelius; Olu-Ojo, Emmanuel Odunayo.
Maize has been of great importance in providing food for man, feed for livestock and raw materials for some agro-based industries. It constitutes a stable food in many regions of the world. Studies in maize production in different parts of Nigeria have shown an increasing importance of the crop amidst growing utilization by food processing industries and livestock feed mills. A manually operated vertical seed-plate maize planter was designed, fabricated and tested. The research was aimed at developing a planting machine that is simple in operation, easy to maintain and affordable by peasant farmers. Design criteria, calculations and analysis of various components of the machine were critically considered and determined in the cause of the development. The...

Physico-mechanical characteristics of rice husk briquettes using different binders CIGR Journal
Igbo, Kiirga Philip.
This study evaluated the physico-mechanical characteristics of rice husk briquettes using plantain peels and gum Arabic as binders. The rice husk residues were milled into particle size of 1.18 to 0.6 mm, plantain peels and gum Arabic as binders at binder ratios of 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight of the rice husk residue. The two sets of briquettes produced were cylindrical in shape with a central hole using cylindrical die (70 mm height × 50 mm diameter) in a hydraulic press briquetting machine at a dwell time of 5 min, under a die pressure of 2.5 MPa. The physical and mechanical properties analyzed were moisture content, relaxed density, stability, durability index, water resistance index and compressive strength. The data obtained were statistically...

Design and fabrication of a locally made motorized multi-grain crop planter CIGR Journal
Soyoye, Babatunde Oluwamayokun.
Grain crops have been of great importance in providing food for man, feed for livestock and raw materials for some agro-based industries.  Studies in grain crops production in different parts of Nigeria have shown an increasing importance of the crops amidst growing utilization by food processing industries and livestock feed mills.  The pre-design experimentation was carried out on yellow maize (Zea mays), Ife Brown cowpea (Phaseolus vulgaris), Seed soybean (Glycine max) and groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L). Some of the properties determined include size, geometric mean diameter, surface area and angle of friction. A locally made motorized vertical seed-plate grain crops planter was designed, fabricated and assembled.  Design criteria, calculations and...

Effect of period of harvest on drying characteristics of an improved variety cowpea (IT 97K-56S-IS) CIGR Journal
Abdulganiy, Raji Olayinka; Taiwo, OLANREWAJU Oluwatoyin.
Shattering loss and loss due to pest attack significantly reduce the quantity and quality of cowpea that can be harvested from the field, hence, the possibility of early harvest of cowpea was investigated. Thin-layer drying kinetics of IT 97K-56S-IS was experimentally investigated in a convective dryer and mathematical modelling was performed by using five thin layer drying models. Experiments were performed on samples harvested 60, 64, 68 and 72 Days After Planting (DAP) and drying temperature of 55, 65, 75 and 85ºC. The effect of period of harvest and drying temperature on the drying characteristics and nutritional content of the dried products were determined. The models performance was evaluated by comparing the coefficient of determination (R2) and...
