Rainwater harvesting knowledge and practice for agricultural production in a changing climate: A review from Uganda’s perspective CIGR Journal
Kiggundu, Nicholas; Wanyama, Joshua; Mfitumukiz, David; Twinomuhangi, Revocatus; Barasa, Bernard; Katimbo, Abia; Kyazze, Florence.
With a changing climate in Uganda, rainfall distribution patterns have become more irregular over time and space. Excess water during rainy season is causing runoff, soil erosion, nutrient depletion and crop damage which reduce the productive capacity of land, while on the other hand, prolonged droughts during the crop growing period have become common occurrences. Additionally, pastoralists lose livestock during the dry period each year in the Cattle Corridor of Uganda due to water shortage and lack of forage. It thus remains difficult to achieve the agricultural development targets identified in the National Development Plan for Uganda, without addressing regular incidences of adverse impacts of climate change. Currently there are no well explained...

Nutritional status and physiological parameters of maize cultivated with sewage sludge Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Moreira,Rodrigo Santos; Lense,Guilherme Henrique Expedito; Fávero,Leonardo Ferreira; Oliveira Junior,Benedito Majela de; Mincato,Ronaldo Luiz.
ABSTRACT The use of sewage sludge as a source of nutrients and organic matter for agricultural soils is a well-established practice. However, few reports highlight the effect of the nutrients and potentially toxic elements provided by organic wastes application on the plant physiological parameters, such as photosynthetic activity and stomatal conductivity. We performed a greenhouse experiment with maize exposed to a dystrophic red Latosol amended with mineral fertilizer and different rates of sewage sludge with the following objectives: i) assess the nutrients and metal uptake translocation and distribution in plants and ii) evaluate the relationship between plant physiological parameters and yield indicators under the study conditions. The application of...

Economic profitability of crop rotation systems in the Caiuá sandstone area Ciência Rural
Volsi,Bruno; Bordin,Ivan; Higashi,Gabriel Eiji; Telles,Tiago Santos.
ABSTRACT: Even in areas of predominance of Caiuá sandstone, with soils of low natural fertility that are highly susceptible to erosion and degradation processes, farmers have adopted systems with little diversification, because they believe that they provide a greater economic return. However, agricultural practices such as crop rotation can bring agronomic benefits in terms of conservation agriculture, in addition to economic gains, circumventing edaphoclimatic difficulties in the region. In this context, the objective of this study is to verify whether no-till crop rotation systems are economically profitable, in a Caiuá sandstone area in the northwest region of the Brazilian state of Paraná. To this end, an experiment was conducted in the municipality...

独立後のトルクメ二スタンの農業動向 OAK
平田, 昌弘; 石田, 紀郎; Hirata, Masahiro; Ishida, Norio.
The annual rainfall in most parts of Turkmenistan is less than 200 mm,and consequently, cultivated fields comprise only 3.3% of the total land area. The majority of the cultivation,98.6%,makes use of irrigation, and the water supply from the Karakum Canal serves as a vital resource for the cultivation...

Agriculture’s contribution to rural viability: An approach to estimate regional economic impacts of agricultural policy in Swiss case study regions AgEcon
Kopainsky, Birgit; Flury, Christian; Giuliani, Gianluca.
This paper develops a thorough yet easily implementable approach to measuring agriculture’s contribution to rural viability. The approach is based on input-output modelling. It adopts a number of concepts from input-output modelling such as determining the explicit geographical origin of input requirements and the geographical destination of farm household expenditures without formerly developing an input-output table. The approach is applied to four case studies in the Swiss mountain regions and tested for three scenarios. Our results clarify the role that agriculture still plays in the context of rural viability. They demonstrate that agriculture’s contribution to rural viability differs considerably between the case study regions and that future...

Characteristics of Canada's Diverse Farm Sector AgEcon
Niekamp, Deborah.
Much of the research in the past on farm structure and economic well-being focused almost exclusively on farms based on their size, their contribution to total agricultural production, or national net farm income. These aggregate measures do not by themselves adequately explain how well the farm is functioning. Confidence in highly aggregated measures of financial performance in agriculture needs to be tempered with an understanding of the diversity that exists within the farm sector. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) developed a farm typology, to better explain why particular groups respond differently. The AAFC typology classifies farms into more homogeneous groups based on five factors: organizational structure (non-family farms) age (retirement...

China's Ongoing Agricultural Modernization: Challenges Remain After 30 Years of Reform AgEcon
Lohmar, Bryan; Gale, H. Frederick, Jr.; Tuan, Francis C.; Hansen, James M..
Thirty years ago, China began implementing a series of reforms to improve efficiency in agricultural production. These, and subsequent, reforms reshaped China’s position in the world economy. China’s rapid economic development and transformation from a planned to a market-oriented economy, however, has reached a stage where further efficiency gains in agricultural production will likely hinge on the development of modern market-supporting institutions. The development of market-supporting institutions in China will bring about long-term and sustainable benefits to producers and consumers in China and the global agricultural economy. This report provides an overview of current issues in China’s agricultural development, policy responses to these issues, and...

On the basis of introducing the concept of water market and the water market research including both domestic market and foreign market, the system design features of water market are analyzed. The features include the prior distribution of agricultural water right, the close construction of market structure, reasonable price of water obtaining right and water pollution-discharge right and scientific stipulation of total volume of water use and total volume of pollution drainage. The practical significances of basin water market construction on Chinese agricultural production are revealed, which clover safeguarding the safety of agricultural water; effectively alleviating agricultural drought; saving me agricultural production water and improving the...
