Thinking on Promoting International Trade Competitive Advantage of Agricultural Products in Guangxi Based on CAFTA Framework AgEcon
Lin, Guihong.
This paper analyzes the status quo and the existing problems of international trade development of agricultural products in Guangxi based on CAFTA framework as follows, the international trade of agricultural products in Guangxi shows a trend of rapid growth, but the structure of export products is simple; the distribution of export market is irrational; the export goods are mainly the resources-intensive goods and labor-intensive goods, with low added value of goods; the brand of agricultural products lacks strong overall international competitiveness. In the context of CAFTA framework, in order to foster the international trade competitive advantage of agricultural products in Guangxi, corresponding suggestions are put forward as follows: the...

Collective Marketing Arrangements for Geographically Differentiated Agricultural Products: Welfare Impacts and Policy Implications AgEcon
Lence, Sergio H.; Marette, Stephan; Hayes, Dermot J.; Foster, William E..
This paper examines the incentive of atomistic agricultural producers within a specific geographical region to differentiate and collectively market products. We develop a model that allows us to analyze the market and welfare effects of the main types of real-world producer organizations, using it to derive economic insights regarding the circumstances under which these organizations will evolve, and describing implications of the results obtained in the context of an ongoing debate between the European Union and United States. As the anticipated fixed costs of development and marketing increase and the anticipated size of the market falls, it becomes essential to increase the ability of the producer organization to control supply in order to ensure the...

Geographical indications emerged on the international scene at the centre of three highly debated subjects: intellectual property, international trade and agricultural policy. The discussion begins with a succinct overview of the definitional aspects of geographical indications, traditional knowledge and traditional knowledge–based agricultural products. Dynamic Relationship between Agricultural Trade and FDI in China AgEcon
Fei, Ping; Xu, Liqing.
On the basis of time series data from 1984 to 2006, co-integration analysis and VAR model are used to carry out empirical analysis on the dynamic relationship between the foreign direct investment in agriculture and the variable volume of international trade of agricultural products. Result shows that there is long-term co-integration relationship between the two. But it is probable that foreign direct investment (FDI) has substituted for improving in the short term and shows deviation from the long-run equilibrium relationship. Therefore, we put forward two policy proposals which are improving market system and strengthening the import management of foreign-funded enterprises.

Agro-food Quality and Safety Based on Agro-ecological Compensation AgEcon
Li, Qing-jiang; Yao, Wen-ying; Hao, Li.
Reflection of the rise f agro-food production costs is analyzed based on the introduction of the quality safety situation of agricultural products in China . Firstly, rise of production cost caused by the demarcation of prohibited areas; secondly, rise of production cost caused by using environment-friendly agricultural inputs; thirdly, rise of production cost caused by quality control; rise of production cost caused by product certification. The ecological compensation mechanism which is beneficial to agro-food quality safety is set up according to the principle “the one who is benefited compensates”. Firstly, laws and regulations of agricultural production compensation are to be actively perfected. Secondly, experience of developed countries can be...

Actor-led Change for Efficient Agrifood Systems; Handbook of the Participatory Actor-based CADIAC Approach AgEcon
Bourgeois, Robin; Herrera, Danilo.
This is a practical handbook for scientists, analysts, and students working on the definition and implementation of policy changes that contribute to real economic and social agriculture-based development, with a special focus on commodity systems. The objective is to promote efficient and sustainable agrifood systems that broadly benefit society. The method presented here relies on the participation of actors in directing the evolution of agrifood systems, including both identifying problems as well as elaborating policies and implementing decisions through concrete actions. There are two linked components: consensus-building between actors to define actions and to implement changes, and participative research based on commodity-chain analysis methods....

A balança comercial do agronegócio brasileiro de 1989 a 2005 AgEcon
Barros, Geraldo Sant'Ana de Camargo; Silva, Simone Fioritti.
This study aims to analyze the agribusiness contribution to Brazil’s trade balance. A new classification of the agribusiness trade balance was proposed and used to analyze the aspects of the exported products –agricultural products, products of animal origin, industrialized foods and imported inputs – represented by fertilizers. Imports and exports vector autoregression models were used to explain the behavior of these variables. An increase of 1% in the attractiveness – product of the exchange rate by the international prices – boosts immediately the exports of non processed agricultural products by 1.71%, stabilizing at 2% after some trimesters. The attractiveness explains 60 to 74% of the forecast error variances of these exportats. It is noted that an...

IMPACTS OF DOHA ROUND ON THE AGRIBUSINESS OF BRAZIL, CHINA AND INDIA AgEcon
Pereira, Matheus Wemerson Gomes; Teixeira, Erly Cardoso; Razap-Skorbiansky, Sharon.
The central themes to be addressed during the Doha Round of world trade negotiations are the reduction of the agricultural production and export subsidies, and improved market access for agricultural and non-agricultural goods. The G-20 group wields enough power to press negotiations at the Doha Round toward lower agricultural trade barriers and production and exports subsidies. The objective of this study is to determine the impacts of four possible Doha Round scenarios on the economies of Brazil, China, and India. The scenarios are examined using the Global Trade Analysis Project’s (GTAP) general equilibrium model and database. Scenarios focusing on the reduction of agricultural production and export subsidies are studied. The scenarios are then analyzed...
