Environmentally induced farmer migration is an important livelihood strategy, yet little is known of the effects on the destination region agroecosystem information networks and management practices. In the forest-savanna transition zone (Brong Ahafo Region) of Ghana, where migration from northern regions (migrant) and from neighboring regions (settler) is active, we chart the role of migrant famers and the type of agroecosystem management practices embedded in information networks using a social networks approach. Based on empirical network data from 44 respondents across three communities, we illustrate a diffuse information network, with variable tie frequency between settlement categories (local, settler, or migrant) of farmers. The cohesion of this... |

This Special Issue on Diversified Farming Systems is motivated by a desire to understand how agriculture designed according to whole systems, agroecological principles can contribute to creating a more sustainable, socially just, and secure global food system. We first define Diversified Farming Systems (DFS) as farming practices and landscapes that intentionally include functional biodiversity at multiple spatial and/or temporal scales in order to maintain ecosystem services that provide critical inputs to agriculture, such as soil fertility, pest and disease control, water use efficiency, and pollination. We explore to what extent DFS overlap or are differentiated from existing concepts such as sustainable, multifunctional, organic or ecoagriculture.... |

The importance of corn production to the midwestern United States cannot be overestimated. However, high production requires high nitrogen fertilization, which carries costs to environmental services such as water quality. Therefore, a trade-off exists between the production of corn yield and water quality. We used the Groundwater Vulnerability Assessment for Shallow depths and Crop Environment Resource Synthesis-Maize models to investigate the nature of this trade-off while testing the Simple Analytic Framework trade-offs featured in this Special Feature. First, we estimated the current levels of yield and water quality production in northeastern Iowa and southern Minnesota at the 1-square-kilometer, county, and regional scales. We then constructed an... |

This article deals with the relationship between family farming, ethical-cultural values, solidarity, agroecological practice and good living. Initially, a reflection on the possible impacts of capitalist development on the category of family farmers is presented. After that, the existing relationship between solidarity economy and family agriculture is approached and, in the sequence, solidarity and agroecological family production style are correlated with the objective of living well. In this sense, as an example, the case of two cooperatives of ecological family farmers is presented. In the final conclusions, the effective possibilities of non-alienated and solidary work, experienced by ecological family farmers, are highlighted as a factor in the... |

ABSTRACT The experiment was conducted in (Integrated Agroecological Production System in Seropedica-RJ) Sistema Integrado de Produção Agroecológica (SIPA), Seropédica-RJ, to evaluate the effect of two maize populations in relation to baby corn productivity and shoot mass, to determine the contribution of pre-cultivated maize, green velvet and organic topdressing fertilization in the agronomic performance of cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata). The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks with three treatments (maize population of 100,000 and 200,000 plants ha-1 and green velvet at 100,000 plants ha-1) and eight replicates. After that, cabbage was transplanted in the straw of these species, adopting a randomized block design allocated in... |
