An increase in global wind speeds over time is affecting the global uptake of CO2 by the ocean. We determine the impact of changing winds on gas transfer and CO2 uptake by using the recently updated, global high-resolution, cross-calibrated multiplatform wind product (CCMP-V2) and a fixed monthly pCO(2) climatology. In particular, we assess global changes in the context of regional wind speed changes that are attributed to large-scale climate reorganizations. The impact of wind on global CO2 gas fluxes as determined by the bulk formula is dependent on several factors, including the functionality of the gas exchange-wind speed relationship and the regional and seasonal differences in the air-water partial pressure of CO2 gradient (pCO(2)). The latter also... |

We present results obtained with SWAMCO-4, a complex model of the marine planktonic system calculating C, N, P, Si, Fe cycling within the upper ocean, the export production and the exchange of CO2 between the ocean and atmosphere. The model, constrained by physical, chemical and biological (grazing, lysis) controls, explicitly details the dynamics of four relevant phytoplankton functional groups with respect to C, N, P, Si, Fe cycling and climate change. Those are diatoms, pico/nano phytoplankton, coccolithophorids, and Phaeocystis spp. whose growth regulation by light, temperature and nutrients has been obtained based on a comprehensive analysis of literature reviews on these taxonomic groups. The performance of SWAMCO-4 is first evaluated in a 1D... |

The fate of the Southern Ocean atmospheric CO(2) sink is under question. Here we assess seasonal to decadal changes of surface fCO(2) within an extended sink area along the track between Kerguelen and Amsterdam islands in the subantarctic zone. Data from 17 oceanographic cruises were used, from 1991 to 2011 and two distinct regions were examined, separated by the Subantarctic Front (SAF). The region south of the SAF displays a strong summer phytoplankton bloom of up to -28 mmol C m(-2) d(-1) within a calm area, constrained by physics and topography. On an annual basis, this region is a 6-fold more important sink than that deduced from Takahashi climatology, highlighting the importance of key-areas separate examination before proceeding to spatial... |
