Temporal variability of atmospheric CO2 of the Spanish Atlantic Coast ArchiMer
Perez, Fiz F; Gago, Jesus; Alvarez, Marta; Rios, Aida F.
The variability of the molar fraction of atmospheric CO2 (xCO(2)(a)) and wind speed and direction were investigated in a coastal embayment located in the west European coast, ria de Vigo, NW Spain, along daily and seasonal time scales. Observations in the ria showed that xCO(2)(a) on a short time scale presented a much wider variability than seawater molar fraction (xCO(2)(w)), in addition, a significant covariation between xCO(2)(a) and wind was found. A sluggish atmospheric renewal due to weak winds was associated with high values of xCO(2)(a), whereas higher oceanic winds renovate the air column with more stable and constrained xCO(2)(a) values (from 350 to 370 ppm). The impact of anomalously high xCO(2)(a) on CO2 air-sea fluxes is practically not...

Air-sea CO2 fluxes in a coastal embayment affected by upwelling: physical versus biological control ArchiMer
Alvarez, M; Fernandez, E; Perez, Ff.
Water column pCO(2) and air-sea CO2 fluxes were studied during an 18-month period (May 1994-September 1995) in a coastal embayment affected by upwelling, located in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula (Ria de Vigo and adjacent shelf). Overall, the region acted as a net annual atmospheric CO, sink, with magnitude ranging from 0.54 mgC m(-2) d(-1) in the Ria estuary to 22 mgC m(-2) d(-1) offshore. During moderate upwelling and upwelling relaxation conditions the sampling area was a sink for atmospheric CO2. By contrast, during winter conditions and during intense upwelling the flux reversed towards the atmosphere. The relative influence of physical and biological processes on pCO(2) was evaluated using two different approaches: firstly, statistical analysis...

Trace element and isotope deposition across the air-sea interface: progress and research needs ArchiMer
Baker, A. R.; Landing, W. M.; Bucciarelli, E.; Cheize, Marie; Fietz, S.; Hayes, C. T.; Kadko, D.; Morton, P. L.; Rogan, N.; Sarthou, G.; Shelley, R. U.; Shi, Z.; Shiller, A.; Van Hulten, M. M. P..
The importance of the atmospheric deposition of biologically essential trace elements, especially iron, is widely recognized, as are the difficulties of accurately quantifying the rates of trace element wet and dry deposition and their fractional solubility. This paper summarizes some of the recent progress in this field, particularly that driven by the GEOTRACES, and other, international research programmes. The utility and limitations of models used to estimate atmospheric deposition flux, for example, from the surface ocean distribution of tracers such as dissolved aluminium, are discussed and a relatively new technique for quantifying atmospheric deposition using the short-lived radionuclide beryllium-7 is highlighted. It is proposed that this field...
