Seasonal changes in the distribution and abundance of marine cladocerans of the Northwest Alboran Sea (Western Mediterranean), Spain BABT
Souza,Christiane Sampaio de; Mafalda Jr.,Paulo; Sallés,Soluna; Ramirez,Teodoro; Cortés,Dolores; Garcia,Alberto; Mercado,Jesus; Vargas-Yañez,Manuel.
The annual cycle of marine cladocerans was studied over six years from 1994 to 1999 within the frame of the monitoring Project ECOMALAGA at a nine stations in the NW of the Alboran Sea, with the aim of assessing seasonal patterns and interannual trends in distribution and abundance of marine cladocerans. Seven species (Penilia avirostris, Evadne nordmanni, Evadne spinifera, Pseudoevadne tergestina, Pleopis polyphemoides, Podon leuckarti and Podon intermedius) were detected in the northwest Alboran Sea. Total cladoceran relative abundance varied from 0 to 89 % of the total cladocerans. The abundance of cladocerans was higher in summer-autumn than in winter-spring (7012 - 4711.100 and 743 - 217.100m-3 , respectively). The species composition was very...

Cold-water coral mounds in the southern Alboran Sea (western Mediterranean Sea): Internal waves as an important driver for mound formation since the last deglaciation ArchiMer
Wang, Haozhuang; Lo Iacono, Claudio; Wienberg, Claudia; Titschack, Jürgen; Hebbeln, Dierk.
Cold-water corals (CWCs) are widely distributed in the entire Alboran Sea (western Mediterranean Sea), but only along the Moroccan margin they have formed numerous coral mounds, which are constrained to the West and the East Melilla CWC mound provinces (WMCP and EMCP). While information already exists about the most recent development of the coral mounds in the EMCP, the temporal evolution of the mounds in the WMCP was unknown up to the present. In this study, we present for the first time CWC ages obtained from four sediment cores collected from different mounds of the WMCP, which allowed to decipher their development since the last deglaciation. Our results revealed two pronounced periods of coral mound formation. The average mound aggradation rates were...

Planktonic bioluminescence measurements in the frontal zone of Almeria-Oran (Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Cussatlegras, As; Geistdoerfer, P; Prieur, L.
Plankton bioluminescence measurements were made in the Almeria-Oran frontal zone during December 1997 and January 1998. Vertical profiles of bioluminescence, chlorophyll fluorescence, temperature and salinity were obtained using a bathyphotometer associated with a CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) probe on a rosette. The first leg of the cruise was a regular sampling along a cross section of the area. The second leg consisted of a repetitive sampling of twelve stations at each one of the eight sites located in different water masses. Hydrological data allowed a distinction from north to south of three different water masses: Mediterranean, frontal and Atlantic. The continuous sampling indicated an increased bioluminescence in the frontal zone, with high...

Experimental study of the Alboran Sea gyres ArchiMer
Gleizon, P; Dhieres, Gc; Renouard, D.
In order to examine the response of the surface flow to the regime in the Gibraltar Strait, the Alboran Sea is modelled in a large rotating channel mounted on the 14 m ''Coriolis'' rotating platform. The channel is divided into two basins connected by a strait. The currents are initialized and maintained constant in time by pumps. When flowing out of the strait, the Atlantic current forms an anticyclonic gyre in the Mediterranean basin. This gyre is related to the Western Alboran Sea Gyre and can develop until its diameter is as large as the width of the basin. Depending on the parameters, the flow exhibits different configurations, which we are able to characterize with the use of tracers (food dye, floats). A very consistent result is that the flow seems...

Atmospheric patterns driving Holocene productivity in the Alboran Sea (Western Mediterranean): A multiproxy approach ArchiMer
Ausin, Blanca; Flores, Jose A.; Sierro, Francisco J.; Cacho, Isabel; Hernandez-almeida, Ivan; Martrat, Belen; Grimalt, Joan O..
High-resolution paleoproductivity variations have been reconstructed in a productive cell in the Alboran Sea for the Holocene. Fossil coccolithophore assemblages have been studied along with the U37 k' -estimated sea-surface temperature ( SST) and other paleoenvironmental proxies. The appearance of this cell is suggested at 7.7 ka cal. BP and was linked to the establishment of the western anti-cyclonic gyre. From that time until the present, the nannofossil accumulation rate of Florisphaera profunda has revealed successive episodes of weakening and strengthening of upwelling conditions in the Alboran Sea that have been simultaneous to changes in Western Mediterranean Deep Water ( WMDW) formation in the Gulf of Lions. A two-phase scenario operating at...

Report on the Hydroida collected by the "BALGIM" expedition in and around the Strait of Gibraltar Naturalis
Ramil, F.; Vervoort, W..
A total of 102 species and varieties of hydroids and three unidentifiable species are described or mentioned in the present report, which deals principally with hydroids collected in the IberoMoroccan Bay (and adjacent Atlantic), the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Alboran Sea; for revisionary purposes some additional, mainly Atlantic, material had to be included. The material described has been assigned to four families of athecate and 14 families of thecate hydroids. Nearly all species have been illustrated and a permanent slide collection has been made. Where necessary the material described has been compared with type material; ten new (sub)species are described, of which eight from the BALGIM material. Holotypes, and where necessary and/or possible...
