A phytoplankton bloom was observed in late winter 2000, on the continental shelf offshore of southern Brittany, in northwestern Bay of Biscay. This bloom appeared initially along the 120-m isobath, in stratified and clear waters, at the interface between the oceanic water and the plumes of southern Brittany rivers (mainly the Loire and Vilaine). The development of the bloom was triggered by favourable meteorological conditions, characterised by solar irradiance reaching the maximum level expected for that period of the year. Outside of the bloom area, the phytoplankton photosynthesis was irradiance limited: inshore, because of the stronger attenuation of the light; offshore, because of the weak stratification. The hydrological conditions at the onset of... |

Objective. Ostreopsis ovata and Ostreopsis siamensis are tropical unicellular algae that have been found recently in the Mediterranean. Both of these dinoflagellates produce palytoxin (PTX)-like toxins that are powerful vasoconstrictors in mammals. Since 2003, Ostreopsis blooms in Italy and Spain have been accompanied by reports of respiratory problems and skin/mucosa irritation in persons in contact with toxic microalgal cells (epiphytes, plankton, or sea spray) or associated toxins. Methods. In France, a surveillance network has been set up to monitor water conditions and to protect swimmers from contamination due to Ostreopsis. Results. Between 2006 and 2009, a total of nine blooms were observed on the French Mediterranean coast including five that led... |

Despite the necessary trade-offs between spatial and temporal resolution, remote sensing is an effective approach to monitor macroalgae blooms, understand their origins and anticipate their developments. Monitoring of small tropical lagoons is challenging because they require high resolutions. Since 2017, the Sentinel-2 satellites has provided new perspectives, and the feasibility of monitoring green algae blooms was investigated in this study. In the Poé-Gouaro-Déva lagoon, New Caledonia, recent Ulva blooms are the cause of significant nuisances when beaching. Spectral indices using the blue and green spectral bands were confronted with field observations of algal abundances using images concurrent with fieldwork. Depending on seabed compositions and... |
