Testing the addition of an alkali (NaOH) in an air cleaner (Munters A/S) connected to a finisher pig unit during the summer resulted in an average odour reduction of 47%. The measurement days were spread over two batches of pigs (summer and autumn). The average odour reduction for the entire test period was 41%. The measurements taken during the autumn did not show a statistically significant odour reduction. Furthermore, the results showed that it was possible to reduce the emission of hydrogen sulphide by 53%. As expected, the levels of ammonia and carbon dioxide were not reduced. When using 100% air cleaning, the consumption of the air cleaner for two batches of finishers (30 – 110 kg) amounted to 355 L water and 2.4 kg 27.7% NaOH solution,... |

ABSTRACT In this report, we present a draft genome of 2,886,173 bp of an Exiguobacterium aurantiacum strain PN47 isolate from the sediment of a saline pond named “Salar del Huasco” in the Altiplano in the North of Chile. Strain PN47 encodes adaptive characteristics enabling survival in extreme environmental conditions of high heavy metal and salt concentrations and high alkalinity. |

Active carbonate chimneys from the shallow marine serpentinizing Prony Hydrothermal Field were sampled 3 times over a 6 years period at site ST09. Archaeal and bacterial communities composition was investigated using PCR-based methods (clone libraries, Denaturating Gel Gradient Electrophoresis, quantitative PCR) targeting 16S rRNA genes, methyl coenzyme M reductase A and dissimilatory sulfite reductase subunit B genes. Methanosarcinales (Euryarchaeota) and Thaumarchaea were the main archaeal members. The Methanosarcinales, also observed by epifluorescent microscopy and FISH, consisted of two phylotypes that were previously solely detected in two other serpentinitzing ecosystems (The Cedars and Lost City Hydrothermal Field). Surprisingly, members of the... |
