Slow warming of the northern South China Sea during the last deglaciation ArchiMer
Shintani, Tomoya; Yamamoto, Masanobu; Chen, Min-te.
We have generated a record of alkenone sea surface temperatures (SSTs) during the last 28000 years from Core MD97-2146 for the northern South China Sea (SCS). The SST record showed a typical pattern for change in the northern SCS SST. The SST during the LGM was similar to 25 degrees C, this decreased to similar to 24 degrees C to 17 ka, increased to similar to 25.5 degrees C to 14.5 ka, decreased again to similar to 24.5 degrees C to 11.8 ka, increased gradually to similar to 27 degrees C to 6 ka, and then increased more gradually to reach similar to 27.5 degrees C at present. The SST difference (Delta SSTNSCS = SSTMD97-2146 - SSTMD97-2141) between Cores MD97-2146 (the northern SCS; this study) and MD97-2141 (the Sulu Sea; Rosenthal et al. 2003) was used...

Deglacial-Holocene environmental changes at the Pacific entrance of the Strait of Magellan ArchiMer
Harada, Naomi; Ninnemann, Ulysses; Lange, Carina B.; Marchant, Margarita E.; Sato, Miyako; Ahagon, Naokazu; Pantoja, Silvio.
We show environmental and nitrogen cycle changes between 13 and 2.5 kyr BP (from the latest deglaciation to the Holocene) based on biogeochemical records in a sediment core from the Pacific entrance of the Strait of Magellan. Organic carbon, total nitrogen, and C-37 alkenone contents were low during 13-9 kyr BP but increased rapidly at 8 kyr BP. The relative contribution of tetra-unsaturated C-37 alkenone, used as a salinity proxy, suggests low salinity during 13-9 kyr BP changing to high salinity at 8 kyr BP. Planktic foraminifer data showed that Globigerina bulloides was more abundant during the deglacial-early Holocene than in the mid-late Holocene, whereas abundances of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma showed the opposite pattern. This evidence plus...

Sea surface temperatures of southern midlatitudes 0-160 kyr BP ArchiMer
Pahnke, K; Sachs, Jp.
Late Quaternary climate fluctuated between extremes of glaciations, lasting similar to 90 kyr on average, and interglacial episodes, lasting similar to 10 kyr. Still largely unknown are the spatial and temporal evolution of these global climate states, with vigorous debate still underway on the mechanisms responsible for glacial inceptions and terminations. Though it is widely believed that the Southern Hemisphere oceans play a central role in global climate changes, few paleoclimate records exist from there. Here we present three new alkenone-derived SST records from the midlatitude Southern Hemisphere spanning the last 160 kyr, a full glacial-interglacial cycle. Our subtropical SST records from the last glacial period are characterized by ( 1) warming 47...

Sea surface temperature proxies (alkenones, foraminiferal Mg/Ca, and planktonic foraminiferal assemblage) and their implications in the Okinawa Trough ArchiMer
Kim, Ryoung Ah; Lee, Kyung Eun; Bae, Si Woong.
We reviewed three sea surface temperature (SST) proxies in the Okinawa Trough (OT): alkenones, planktonic foraminiferal Mg/Ca, and planktonic foraminiferal assemblages. The seasonal and vertical distribution patterns of each proxy-related organism in the water column were reviewed to confirm the applicability of each proxy. In addition, current SSTs (Japan Oceanographic Data Center dataset from 1906 to 2003) were compared with core-top sediment temperatures reconstructed using the proxies. Temperatures calculated using the alkenone unsaturation index represent annual mean SSTs, and temperatures calculated using Mg/Ca of Globigerinoides ruber capture summer to autumn (June-November) SSTs. Core-top August SSTs calculated from planktonic foraminiferal...
