The genetic variability of Oligosarcus paranensis was estimated from a population collected in São Francisco river, Prudentópolis county in Paraná State (Brazil) using the electrophoresis in starch gel technique. Eleven enzymatic systems were analyzed: Aspartate aminotransaminase (AAT; E. C. 2.6.1), Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH; E. C. 1.1.1.1), Esterase (EST; E. C. 3.1.1.1), Glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI; E. C. 5.3.1.9), Glycerol-3-Phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH; E. C. 1.1.1), Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH; E. C. 1.1.1.42), L-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH; E. C. 1.1.1.27), Malate dehydrogenase (MDH; E. C. 1.1.1.37 ), Malate dehydrogenase NADP (ME; E. C. 1.1.1.40), Phosphoglucomutase (PGM; E. C. 5.4.2.2) and Sorbitol dehydrogenase (SORB; E.C. 1.1.1.14).... |

Rare and narrowly endemic species are more vulnerable to extinction due to their restricted geographical distribution. the genus Petunia has 14 species and most of them are endemic to a restricted area. Four Petunia species that grow in Southern Brazil were studied: P. bonjardinensis, P. reitzii, P. integrifolia subsp. depauperata, and P. exserta. We presented a preliminary study on the genetic diversity of five populations of Petunia, using allozyme markers. For the genetic analyses, allozyme electrophoresis was carried out and eight enzyme systems were reliably scored. Standard measures of allozyme diversity were calculated. The highest genetic diversity and the highest fixation index was found in the two studied populations of P. bonjardinensis (P = 90,... |

Genetic differentiation in the Chilean blue mussel Mytilus chilensis (Hupé 1854) was investigated based on the variation in the allozyme frequencies of Pgm, Gpi, Icd, Me, Gsr, Lap and Pep in eight samples collected along 1800 km from Arauco (VIII Region) to Punta Arenas (XII Region). Despite the large geographic separations, values of Neis unbiased genetic distance, D (0.004-0.048) and standardised genetic variation among populations, Fst (0.011-0.055) were small. The levels of gene flow (Nm = 8) found in this study prevent the effect of differentiation among populations by genetic drift. This findings indicate that its long-lived planktotrophic larvae provides this species with considerable dispersal ability throughout its range which is favoured by the... |

The brittle star Ophiothrix fragilis (Abilgaard, 1789) constitutes a heterogeneous morphological group that can be subdivided into 4 varieties. The species is also characterized by high demographic variability. The present study explores the possibility of genetic patchiness arising due to admixture of varieties or recruitment heterogeneity. We sequenced a portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) gene and genotyped 7 allozymes from 21 populations of the 2 most common varieties. While mtCOI analyses showed that all the varieties grouped together with virtually no divergence among them (< 1%), a clear divergence (18.6%) was evident between the northern Atlantic populations and individuals collected in the Mediterranean and along... |

With the constant rising of the human population, it is essential to assess and manage the exploitation of the marine species for human consumption such as the anchovy of Bay of Biscay. Thanks to the PELGAS annual surveys, stocks of each species are estimated (biomass, repartition) and studies are undertaken to improve our knowledge about these species. Allozymic studies realized on the anchovy allowed to find a correlation between 2 alleles of the locus IDH and the habitat (depth). This allozyme has a key role in Krebs’ cycle, being speed limiting.. It enables to tolerate variations of temperature and dissolved oxygen. It would be interesting to do new research on variations in the anchovy’s environment and its migrations. |

Hybridization between divergent lineages often results in reduced hybrid viability. Here we report findings from a series of independent molecular analyses over several seasons on four life stages of F1 hybrids between the newts Triturus cristatus and T. marmoratus. These two species form a bimodal hybrid zone of broad overlap in France, with F1 hybrids making up about 4% of the adult population. We demonstrate strong asymmetry in the direction of the cross, with one class (cristatus-mothered) making up about 90% of F1 hybrids. By analyzing embryos and hatchlings, we show that this asymmetry is not due to prezygotic effects, as both classes of hybrid embryos are present at similar frequencies, implicating differential selection on the two hybrid classes... |

The genetic variability of three Gymnotus species from the Caracu stream, a small tributary of the left margin of Paraná River (Brazilian upper Paraná River floodplain), was estimated with data of 17 putative allozyme loci, which were obtained by using corn starch gel electrophoresis of 10 enzymatic systems: Aspartate aminotransferase (E. C. 2.6.1.1), Alcohol dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.1), Esterase (E. C. 3.1.1.1), Glucose dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.118), Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.8), Isocitrate dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.42), L-Lactate dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.27), Malate dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.37), Superoxide dismutase (E. C. 1.15.1.1) and Sorbitol dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.14). The genetic diversity was estimated as He =... |

The objectives of this work were to optimize the isozyme electrophoresis technique for Bixa orellana, and use isozyme markers for a preliminary survey on the genetic variability in Brazilian annatto germplasm accessions. Collection consisted of seed samples from sixty open pollinated trees, representing two Northern and four Southern geographic provenances. The extraction, electrophoresis, and interpretation of annatto isozymes are described. Three out of the twenty-one identified isozyme loci were polymorphic in the collection. The percentage of polymorphic loci (P = 21.05) and the expected heterozygosity in annatto (H T = 0.064) were low, compared to other tropical woody species. A UPGMA phenogram, constructed with Nei's genetic distances, clearly... |
