Validation of Jason and Envisat Altimeter Dual Frequency Rain Flags ArchiMer
Tournadre, Jean.
New rain flags based on the dual frequency capabilities of the new Jason Poseidon-2 and Envisat RA2 altimeters have been tested, developed and adopted for the operational processing of the altimeter data. Their validation conducted during the calibration/validation phases of the satellites is presented here. The Jason flag is validated by comparison with the TOPEX one, using the Tandem mission. The results show a very good agreement between the two sensors and the two rain flags The Envisat flag is validated by comparison with both Jason and TOPEX using global and collocated data sets. The results show similar performances for the three sensors. The f relations estimated during the calibration-validation period and presented here have been given to the...

Jamstec/deep tow camera system (on the manned submersible "SHINKAI 2000 vehicle") ArchiMer
Otsuka, K.
The JAMSTEC/Deep Tow Camera System conducts pre-site-surveys for the manned submersible "SHINKAI 2000". The vehicle is towed by double armored coaxial cable (RG-8/U) of 4500 m length. The color composite video signal is converted to an FM signal with central frequency of 6.15 MHz because it is very difficult to compensate completely for the transmission loss of video frequency through the coaxial cable. The data from the CTD sensors and the altimeter are displayed with date and time on the monitor screen in real time. Temperature data has proved very important in finding hydrothermal anomaly phenomena. Two years ago, our research group found an active chimney at North Fiji Basin during cooperative cruise between France and Japan. Last year, we deployed...

Foraging strategy of a top predator in tropical waters: great frigatebirds in the Mozambique Channel ArchiMer
Weimerskirch, Henri; Le Corre, Matthieu; Jaquemet, Sébastien; Potier, Michel; Marsac, Francis.
Although oceanic tropical waters occupy almost 50% of the total area of pelagic oceans, knowledge of the foraging ecology of top predators in these low productivity waters is limitied. This is particularly the case for tropical seabirds that are believed to rely on scarce and unpredictable resources and have developed specific foraging strategies to exploit these resources. Frigatebirds are tropical seabirds that rely on subsurface predators such as tuna or cetaceans to feed. We studied the foraging strategy at sea of great frigatebirds breeding on Europa Island in the Mozambique Channel using satellite transmitters and altimeters. When foraging, birds moved at slow speeds (average 16.4 km h(-1)) and stayed at an average altitude of 180 m, continuously...
