Role of Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis amastigote glycosphingolipids in macrophage infectivity BJMBR
Tanaka,A.K.; Gorin,P.A.J.; Takahashi,H.K.; Straus,A.H..
The role of glycosphingolipids (GSLs) present in amastigote forms of Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis during infection of macrophages was analyzed, with particular emphasis on GSLs presenting the terminal Galpß1-3Galpa disaccharide. Macrophage invasion by L. (L.) amazonensis amastigotes was reduced by 37% when the disaccharide Galpß1-3Galp (1 mM) was added to the culture medium. The putative macrophage receptor/lectin for ß-Gal-globotriaosylceramide (Galpß1-3Galpa1-4Galpß1-4Glc pß1-1Cer) and other structurally related GSLs from L. (L.) amazonensis amastigotes were analyzed by micelles and parasite binding assay to peritoneal macrophage proteins fractionated by SDS-PAGE under nonreducing conditions. Micelles containing purified amastigote GSLs or a...

Trypanosoma cruzi: amastigote polymorphism defined by monoclonal antibodies BJMBR
Verbisck,N.V.; Da-Silva,S.; Mortara,R.A..
We have raised monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) directed towards amastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi, and shown that mAbs 1D9 and 4B9 are carbohydrate while mAb 4B5 activity is resistant to periodate oxidation of the antigen. Here we used an ELISA to quantitate and compare the expression of surface epitopes on fixed parasites among different parasite isolates. The expression of markers varied among T. cruzi amastigotes isolated from infected cells or after extracellular differentiation of trypomastigotes. Moreover, we also observed an extensive polymorphic expression of these epitopes among amastigotes derived from different strains and clones. For instance, mAb 2C2 strongly and evenly reacted with 9 strains and clones (G, Y, CL, Tulahuen, MD, and F, and...

PREVALENCE OF CUTANEOUS LEISHMANIASIS IN PARTS OF KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA OAK
Okwori, E. N. A.; Nock, I. H.; Galadima, M.; Ibrahim, S..
A cross-sectional survey of 29 randomly selected schools, comprising 11 (37.9%) post-primary schools and 18 (62.1%) primary schools from eight Local Government Areas (LGAs) (approximately 35% of the 23 LGAs) of Kaduna State was undertaken to determine the prevalence status of cutaneous leishmaniasis between May and October, 1997. The disease occurrence was detected by on-sight diagnosis of active lesions and scars, and observed leishmanial cases were recorded for patients who gave description of symptoms that fitted into clinical symptoms of cutaneous leishmaniasis. The recorded cases were confirmed by parasitological examination of Giemsa-stained lesion smears for amastigotes in the laboratory. The Chi-square analysis of the result revealed that there was...
