Abstract Aminoglycosides are a class of antibiotics that play a key role in antimicrobial treatment of Multidrug resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacilli, typically in combination with β-lactams. Ribosomal 16S RNA modification by methyltransferases (e.g. RmtG) is an aminoglycoside resistance mechanism that, along with the occurrence carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), has become a clinical concern. In Brazil, rmtG genes were initially reported in Klebsiella pneumoniae, and monitoring isolates from other species carrying this gene is critical for epidemiological studies and to prevent dissemination. Here we report the presence of rmtG in Klebisella aerogenes D3 and characterize its genetic context in comparison to isolates from other species.... |

Crocus sativus, known as saffron, is used in folk medicine for treatment of different types of diseases, and its anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging activities have been demonstrated. The present study evaluated gentamicin nephrotoxicity in saffron treated rats. Male Wistar rats (200-250g) were treated with saffron (40 or 80 mg/k/d) for 10 days, or saffron (40 or 80 mg/ kg/d) for 10 days and gentamicin 80 mg/kg/d for five days, starting from day 6. At the end of treatment, blood samples were taken for measurement of serum creatinine (SCr) and BUN. The left kidney was prepared for histological evaluation and the right kidney for Malondialdehyde (MDA) measurement. Gentamicin 80 (mg/k/d) increased SCr, BUN and renal tissue levels of MDA and induced... |

The safety and efficacy of cefepime empiric monotherapy compared with standard broad-spectrum combination therapy for hospitalized adult patients with moderate to severe community-acquired bacterial infections were evaluated. In an open-label, multicenter study, 317 patients with an Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE II) score ranging from >5 to =19 were enrolled with documented pneumonia (n=196), urinary tract infection (n=65), intra-abdominal infection (n=38), or sepsis (n=18). Patients were randomly assigned 1:1 to receive cefepime 1 to 2 g IV twice daily or three times a day or IV ampicillin, cephalothin, or ceftriaxone ± aminoglycoside therapy for 3 to 21 days. For both treatment groups, metronidazole, vancomycin, or macrolide... |
