Review of Cyrtomyia Bigot (Diptera, BomByliidae, Ecliminae) with a key to the Neotropical genera of Ecliminae and Cyrtomyia species Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Lamas,Carlos José Einicker; Rodrigues,Paula Fernanda Motta.
The Neotropical genus Cyrtomyia Bigot has a distribution restricted to the Andean region of South America, with records only in Argentina and Chile. The genus is composed by two species, which are reviewed and redescribed herein: C. chilensis Paramonov, 1931 and C. pictipennis (Bigot, 1857). The main characters of the external morphology of adults are photographed. Illustrations of the male and female terminalia of C. chilensis are also included. An identification key to species is presented, and the species distribution is briefly discussed.

Collective Action for Innovation and Small Farmer Market Access: The Papa Andina Experience AgEcon
Devaux, Andre; Velasco, Claudio; Lopez, Gaston; Bernet, Thomas; Ordinola, Miguel; Pico, Hernan; Thiele, Graham; Horton, Douglas.
The Andean highlands are home to some of the poorest rural households in South America. Native potato varieties and local knowledge for their cultivation and use are unique resources possessed by farmers in these areas. As the forces of globalization and market integration penetrate the Andes, they present both challenges and opportunities for farmers there. This paper reports on how the Papa Andina Regional Initiative is promoting the use of collective action to reduce poverty in the Andes, by developing market niches and adding value to potatoes, particularly the native potatoes grown by poor farmers. Since 1998, Papa Andina has worked with partners in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru to stimulate pro-poor innovation within market chains for potato-based...

Ecological niche models and patterns of richness and endemism of the southern Andean genus Eurymetopum (Coleoptera, Cleridae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Escalante,Tania; Linaje,Miguel; Illoldi-Rangel,Patricia; Rivas,Miguel; Estrada,Patricia; Neira,Francisca; Morrone,Juan J..
Eurymetopum is an Andean clerid genus with 22 species. We modeled the ecological niches of 19 species with Maxent and used them as potential distributional maps to identify patterns of richness and endemicity. All modeled species maps were overlapped in a single map in order to determine richness. We performed an optimality analysis with NDM/VNDM in a grid of 1º latitude-longitude in order to identify endemism. We found a highly rich area, located between 32º and 41º south latitude, where the richest pixels have 16 species. One area of endemism was identified, located in the Maule and Valdivian Forest biogeographic provinces, which extends also to the Santiago province of the Central Chilean subregion, and contains four endemic species (E. parallelum, E....

Quality of rocoto pepper (Capsicumpubescens Ruiz & Pav.) seeds in relation to extraction timing Acta Agron. (Palmira)
García-Ruiz,Roger Fabián; Castañeda-Garzón,Sandra Liliana; Valdéz-Hernández,Edna Fabiola.
Abstract Rocoto pepper (C. pubescens), is one of the domesticated species of the genus Capsicum in South America. Currently, its supply and demand are arising in national and global market. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal extraction timing of the seeds of C. pubescens according to physiological and physical seed qualities. Seed qualities measurement include seed weight, number of seeds per fruit, total emergence, emergence rate, mean emergence time, mean daily emergence, survival percentage, peak value and emergence value. Treatments were evaluated for comparison as follows: seed extraction ranged from 0 to 3 days after harvest (T1), and seed extraction ranged from 14 to 17 days after harvest (T2). T1 presented seeds with the best...
