How fast can the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) larvae cross the Atlantic Ocean? ArchiMer
Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Blanke, Bruno; Treguier, Anne-marie; Grima, Nicolas; Rivot, Etienne; Vermard, Youen; Greiner, Eric; Le Pape, Olivier.
The migration duration of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) larvae (leptocephali) from the spawning areas in the Sargasso Sea to the European continental shelf remains highly controversial, with estimates varying from 6 months to more than 2 yr. We estimated the fastest migration period and the shortest distance travelled by eel larvae by simulating Lagrangian particles released in the Sargasso Sea and by simulating a range of larval behaviours (fixed-depth drift, vertical diurnal migration and active-depth selection to maximize current velocity). This enabled us to compute (i) a passive drift speed, and (ii) a hypothetic swimming speed needed for European eel larvae to cross the Atlantic in 6 months (i.e., the migration duration estimated from otolith...

Les ressources halieutiques de l'etang de Berre ArchiMer
Le Corre, Gildas; Garcia, Fabrice.
Fishing activity in the french mediterranean lagoon Etang de Berre is actually allowed in spite of a degradation of the environment during the last fifty years. To analyse the results and the working of the fishery, a study based on a sampling survey of catches and fishing effort has been conducted in the various landing ports over a two years period. Annual weight and value productions by species and gear have been evaluated by mean of statistical calculation procedures. The results show that the fishery is based on the exploitation of two main species (anguilla and grey mullet) and that important variations exist between the two sampled years. The limits to be reached by the working of this fishery are prompted in the scope of a future regulation.

Pseudoscorpions of the genera Pachyolpium, Novohorus and Amblyolpium (Pseudoscorpiones: Olpiidae) from St. Eustatius (Statia), St. Martin (Sint Maarten) and Anguilla (Lesser Antilles, Leeward group) Naturalis
Tooren, D. van den.
Two new species of pseudoscorpions are described: Pachyolpium confusum spec. nov. from St. Eustatius (Statia) and Amblyolpium martinensis spec. nov. from St. Martin (Sint Maarten). Another species: Novohorus incertus (Beier, 1931) is recorded from 2 new localities: Anguilla and St. Martin (Sint Maarten). A comparative examination is performed to check how far the ratio palpal femur length/palpal patella length is useful as a taxonomic character to separate a number of species belonging to the genus Pachyolpium. Two keys are given: i. An adaptation and extension of Hoff’s key (1945) to the westindian species of the genus Pachyolpium, relying on present-day knowledge of interspecific relationship within the genus. ii. A key to separate genera belonging to...
