The study was carried out with the objective of verifying which measures and morphometric ratios are more directly related to the body yield of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, in two weight classes. Data were analyzed from 257 specimens of tilapia divided into two weight classes: p1 = 400 to 599 g and p2 = 600 to 900 g. The morphometric measurements standard length (SL), head length (HL), body height (BH) and body width (BW), and the ratios of these measures (HL / SL, BH / SL, BW / SL, HL / BH, BW / BH, BW / HL) were evaluated. The following body yields were calculated: carcass (RCAR), fillet (RFILE) and head (RCAB). The data were initially submitted to the "stepwise" procedure to eliminate problems of multicollinearity among the morphometric... |

The current study was carried out to perform QTL mapping on swine chromosome 6 (SSC6) associated to meat quality traits. The F2 population was produced by outbreed crossing using two native Brazilian breed Piau boars and 18 commercial sows. A total of 557 F2 animals were genotyped for 13 microsatellite markers. The traits evaluated on the F2 population were: pH measured 45 minutes and 24 hours post mortem (pH 45, pH24, respectively), drip loss (DL), cooking loss (CL), total loss (TL), intramuscular fat content (IMF), objective tenderness (OT), lightness (L), redness (A), yellowness (B), hue angle (h) and chrome (c). Data were analyzed by multiple regression developed for analysis of outbreed line crosses, using the QTL Express Software. Significant QTL... |

ABSTRACT: Data from 629 meat type quails were used to study association between two different sets of traits: egg production and reproduction. Traits related to reproduction were: body weight at 42 days (W42), average egg weight (AEW), age at sexual maturity (ASM); and production traits: number of eggs produced from 42 until 182th day considering intervals of 35 days each period (P1, P2, P3 and P4). Canonical correlations were used to describe the association between these two sets of traits. The canonical coefficients indicated that egg production and reproductive traits were moderately related (0.3475). The first partial period of production (P1) and age at sexual maturity were the most relevant traits among the analyzed variables. Results show that... |

Over the last 20 years, the two uniparentally inherited marker systems, namely mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome have been widely employed to solve questions about origin and prehistorical range expansions, demographic processes, both in humans and domestic animals. The mtDNA and the Y chromosome, with their unique patterns of inheritance, continue to be extremely important source of information. These markers played significant roles in farm animals in the evaluation of the genetic variation within- and among-breed strains and lines and have widely applied in the fields of linkage mapping, paternity tests, prediction of breeding values in genome-assisted selection, analysis of genetic diversity within breeds detection of population admixture, assessment... |

Brazilian goats are generally kept in small herds and extensive rearing systems, mainly in the northeastern region of the country. Despite production improvement in recent years, the lack of pedigree control has affected genetic progress. This study aimed to validate a panel of 16 microsatellites for parentage testing in locally adapted and commercial goats breeds raised in Brazil, as well as to compare its efficiency with the panel recommended by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supplies (MAPA) in 2004. The number of alleles and expected heterozygosity (He) per marker ranged from four to 18, and from 0.051 to 0.831, respectively. Using all markers, 100% of parentage cases of the validation dataset were resolved with a strict confidence... |

The decision-making process is complex and often demands time and difficulties for managers, project coordinators and, especially here, specialists in genetic improvement programs. Tools that can help this process are always welcome and are added to other alternatives for a correct and efficient decision. Despite the possibility of being used in several areas of knowledge, the MultiAtr software was specially developed for the definition of weights for the selection objectives of animal breeding programs. Its use in interviews with specialists, breeders and scholars can contribute to the direction of these programs by the scientists involved in this decision. Based on this, it is recommended, for the scientific community and other decision-making actors,... |
