Role of bacteria in the gastral cavity of Anthozoa. ArchiMer
Herndl, G; Velimirov, B.
Bacterial density of the coelenteric fluid (CF) of some anthozoan species was determined in situ and under laboratory conditions. In all species examined bacterial density of the CF was higher in the gastral cavity than in ambient ranging from 10 super(5) up to 5 x 10 super(6) cells. ml super(-1). Incubation experiments with the CF indicate that a bacterial population within the coelenteron is efficiently controlled by the CF, favoring bacterial growth if bacterial densities are low in the CF and showing clearance activity at high bacterial densities. Feeding of pre-starved anthozoans caused a rapid response of coelenteric rod-shaped bacteria. Evidence is presented that coelenteric bacteria are digested periodically although they contribute 1% to the...

Host specificity and phylogenetic relationships among Atlantic Ovulidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) Naturalis
Reijnen, B.T.; Hoeksema, B.W.; Gittenberger, E..
Ovulid gastropods and their octocoral hosts were collected along the leeward coast of Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. New molecular data of Caribbean and a single Atlantic species were combined with comparable data of Indo-Pacific Ovulidae and a single East-Pacific species from GenBank. Based on two DNA markers, viz. CO-I and 16S, the phylogenetic relationships among all ovulid species of which these data are available are reconstructed. The provisional results suggest a dichotomy between the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific taxa. Fully grown Simnialena uniplicata closely resembles juvenile Cyphoma gibbosum conchologically. Cymbovula acicularis and C. bahamaensis might be synonyms. The assignments of Caribbean host species for Cyphoma gibbosum, C....

North-eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean species of Cornulariidae Dana, 1846 (Anthozoa: Stolonifera) with the description of a new genus Naturalis
López-González, P.J.; Ocaña, O.; García-Gómez, J.C.; Núñez, J..
The North-eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean species of the family Cornulariidae are re-examined and taxonomically revised. This family is mainly characterized by the absence of sclerites. Up to now, only one genus, Cornularia Lamarck, 1816, has been assigned to the family. Studies of the internal and external anatomy of the European species of Cornulariidae, carried out for the first time on a comparative basis, leads us to propose a new genus, Cervera. New combinations of the species included in the family are proposed. The main characters of Cervera gen. nov. are the presence of a fine chitinous periderm, various communication canals in the stolons and the absence of a additional chitinous layer that covers the periderm. Cornularia atlantica Johnson,...

A new species of Allopathes (Cnidaria: Antipatharia) from the eastern Atlantic Naturalis
Opresko, D.M..
A new species of antipatharian coral, Allopathes denhartogi, is described from the eastern Atlantic. The species is distinguished from the two other species in the genus by spines that are larger, less dense and not arranged in verticils. Furthermore, the colony appears to reach a smaller size and has relatively fewer ramifications compared to the other species.

First Indonesian record of Fungiacava eilatensis Goreau et al., 1968 (Bivalvia: Mytilidae), endosymbiont of Fungia spp. (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) Naturalis
Hoeksema, B.W.; Achituv, Y..
The mytilid bivalve Fungiacava eilatensis Goreau, Goreau, Neumann & Yonge, 1968, previously mistakenly referred to as F. eilatensis Soot-Ryen, 1969, is reported for the first time from Indonesia. It lives as an obligate endosymbiont of mushroom corals, particulary Fungia spp., reef-dwelling corals restricted to the tropical Indo-Pacific. Notes are given on its association with different host species, its habitat, its biogeography, and its possible competition with endosymbiotic gastropods belonging to the genus Leptoconchus (Coralliophilidae).

New records on sea anemones (Anthozoa: Actiniaria) from hydrothermal vents and cold seeps Naturalis
López-González, P.J.; Rodríguez, E.; Gili, J.-M.; Segonzac, M..
During several cruises carried out by the Ifremer (Institut français de recherche pour l’exploitation de la mer) with the submersile “Nautile” at different hydrothermal sites and cold seeps, an important collection of anthozoans - mainly actiniarians - was sampled. Additional material was collected by an American cruise with the submersile “Alvin”. The goal of the present contribution is to describe part of this actiniarian fauna inhabiting three chemoautotrophic sites, one of them in the Mid-Atlantic Rise and the other two in the Eastern Pacific. A new genus and species of actinostolids is proposed after the study of specimens collected at hydrothermal vents in the Guaymas Basin (East Pacific Rise, Gulf of California, 27º00’N-111º24’W, 2020 m)....

The nephtheid soft coral genus Gersemia Marenzeller, 1878, with the description of a new species from the northeast Pacific and a review of two additional species (Octocorallia: Alcyonacea) Naturalis
Williams, G.C.; Lundsten, L..
A new species of nephtheid soft coral inhabiting the northeast Pacific Ocean is described from samples collected using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and a benthic trawl. Two hundred thirty ROV video observations provide additional information about the biogeographical distribution and habitat characteristics of this new species and are used to supplement the information ascertained from collected specimens. The species described herein is found through a broad range of depths (519-2034 m), has been observed through a latitudinal range of approximately 1581 km (33.10472°N; 47° 51.412’N), and has primarily been observed living upon hard-rock substrate. In addition, we revise the generic designation of the South African nephtheid Litophyton liltvedi and...

The phylogenetic position of the solitary zoanthid genus Sphenopus (Cnidaria: Hexacorallia) Naturalis
Reimer, J.D.; Lin, M.; Fujii, T..
The zoanthid genus Sphenopus (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Zoantharia), like many other brachycnemic zoanthids, is found in shallow subtropical and tropical waters, but is uniquely unitary (solitary, monostomatous), azooxanthellate, and free-living. With sparse knowledge of its phylogenetic position, this study examines the phylogenetic position of Sphenopus within the family Sphenopidae utilizing specimens from southern Taiwan and Brunei collected in 1999-2011, and furthermore analyzes the evolution of its unique character set via ancestral state reconstruction analyses. Phylogenetic analyses surprisingly show Sphenopus to be phylogenetically positioned within the genus Palythoa, which is colonial (polystomatous), zooxanthellate, and attached to solid substrate....
