Effects of Oral Oxytetracycline-Therapy on Wound Progression and Healing Following Aeromonas caviae Infection in Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) BABT
Roy,Anwesha; Abraham,Thangapalam Jawahar; Namdeo,Meshram Supradhnya; Singha,Jasmine; Julinta,Roy Beryl; Boda,Satyanarayana.
Abstract The effects of oral oxytetracycline (OTC)-therapy against Aeromonas caviae infection as well as the wound progression and healing in intramuscular (IM) and abrasion-immersion (AI) challenged Nile tilapia juveniles were evaluated. The IM challenge caused significantly (p < 0.05) high mortalities (90%) compared to AI challenge (40%). The mortalities recorded in 10 days OTC-fed (72% in IM group and 30% in AI group) and untreated Nile tilapia were significantly (p < 0.05) high compared to positive (5-10%) controls. The reduction in mortalities in OTC-fed Nile tilapia was significant (p < 0.05) with no further mortalities during the post-OTC therapy period. In IM group, the black scar disappearance, re-growth of dermal fibrous tissue and skin...

Incidence and treatment of methicillin-resistant S. aureus infection in cystic fibrosis patients: a cohort study BJID
Bittencourt,Paloma Horejs; Pimentel,Carlos Sidney Silva; Bonfim,Bianca Sampaio; Marostica,Paulo José; Souza,Edna Lúcia.
Abstract In Brazil the knowledge about methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection in cystic fibrosis patients is scarce. This study aimed to determine the incidence of respiratory tract colonization and the identification rates after a standardized treatment. A retrospective cohort was performed highlighting the history of respiratory colonizations between January 2008 and June 2015. Patients under the age of 21 years with cystic fibrosis confirmed by sweat test or genetic study receiving care at the outpatient clinics of a Teaching Hospital were included. The treatment consisted of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, rifampicin, nasal mupirocin and chlorhexidine 2%. The mean follow-up period was of 22.2 months and those with ≥3 negative cultures...

Early switch/early discharge opportunities for hospitalized patients with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus complicated skin and soft tissue infections in Brazil BJID
Furtado,Guilherme H.; Rocha,Jaime; Hayden,Ricardo; Solem,Caitlyn; Macahilig,Cynthia; Tang,Wing Yu; Chambers,Richard; Figueiredo,Maria Lavínea Novis de; Johnson,Courtney; Stephens,Jennifer; Haider,Seema.
ABSTRACT Background: Early antibiotic switch and early discharge protocols have not been widely studied in Latin America. Our objective was to describe real-world treatment patterns, resource use, and estimate opportunities for early switch from intravenous to oral antibiotics and early discharge for patients hospitalized with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus complicated skin and soft-tissue infections. Materials/methods: This retrospective medical chart review recruited 72 physicians from Brazil to collect data from patients hospitalized with documented methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus complicated skin and soft tissue infections between May 2013 and May 2015, and discharged alive by June 2015. Data collected included clinical...

Is nosocomial Escherichia coli bacteremia a predictive risk factor for mortality? BJID
Tuon,Felipe F.; Rocha,Jaime L.; Guadagnin,Fernanda A.; Alves,Márcia S..
The objective of this study was to determine risk factors associated with mortality in patients with nosocomial Escherichia coli bacteremia from January 2009 to January 2011. In a retrospective study the medical records of 88 patients over 18 years with nosocomial bacteremia caused by E. coli were analyzed. In univariate analysis several risk factors, including chronic renal failure, altered mental status, leukocytosis, and higher Charlson index of comorbidities were associated with mortality. In multivariate analysis only altered mental status remained independently associated with mortality. Mental confusion can be a risk factor for mortality in patients with E. coli bacteremia.

Treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Latin America BJID
Luna,Carlos M; Rodríguez-Noriega,Eduardo; Bavestrello,Luis; Gotuzzo,Eduardo.
The global spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) means it is now a pathogen of worldwide public health concern. Within Latin America, MRSA is highly prevalent, with the proportion of S. aureus isolates that are methicillin-resistant on the rise, yet resources for managing the infection are limited. While several guidelines exist for the treatment of MRSA infections, many are written for the North American or European setting and need adaptation for use in Latin America. In this article, we aim to emphasize the importance of appropriate treatment of MRSA in the healthcare and community settings of Latin America. We present a summary of the available guidelines and antibiotics, and discuss particular considerations for clinicians...
