Assessment of the spatial variability of phenolic contents and associated bioactivities in the invasive alga Sargassum muticum sampled along its European range from Norway to Portugal ArchiMer
Tanniou, A.; Vandanjon, L.; Incera, M.; Serrano Leon, Esteban; Husa, V.; Le Grand, Jacqueline; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Poupart, N.; Kervarec, N.; Engelen, A.; Walsh, R.; Guerard, F.; Bourgougnon, N.; Stiger-pouvreau, Valerie.
Sargassum muticum, an invasive brown macroalga presently distributed along European Atlantic coasts from southern Portugal to the south coast of Norway, was studied on a large geographical scale for its production of phenolic compounds with potential industrial applications and their chemical and biological activities. S. muticum can produce high biomass in Europe, which could be exploited to supply such compounds. S. muticum was collected in Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland and Norway (three sites/country) to examine the effect of the latitudinal cline and related environmental factors. Assays focused particularly on polyphenols and their activities. Crude acetone–water extracts were purified using solid phase extraction (SPE) and antioxidant and...

Effect of processing conditions of hot pressurized solvent extraction in batch reactor on anthocyanins of purple field corn CIGR Journal
Muangrat, Rattana; Jampatong, Sansern; Saengcharoenrat, Phanat.
Total anthocyanin content of the dried kernel and dried cob of purple field corn was investigated under hot pressurized solvent extraction conditions. The highest total anthocyanin content of 492.51 µg cyanidin-3-glucoside/g dry weight of sample was obtained from dried kernel extraction using water-ethanol ratio 1:3 as solvent at sample-solvent ratio 1:8 and extraction temperature of 80 oC. For the dried cob extraction, the highest total anthocyanin content obtained was 1890.49 µg cyanidin-3-glucoside/g dry weight of sample using water-ethanol ratio 1:1 as solvent at sample-solvent ratio 1:8, and extraction temperature of 100 oC. The extraction was carried out at pressure of 0.20 MPa and 15 min with N2 purging. Additionally, the antioxidant activities...

Abstract Plants are the main sources of natural antioxidants in the form of phenolic compounds, which help human beings to deal with oxidative stress, caused by free radical damage. For this reason, the present study was carried out to evaluate the antiproliferative, antioxidant and inhibition of oxidative DNA damage activities of n-butanol extract obtained from aerial parts of Limonium bonduelli. The antioxidant potential was determined using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and inhibition of lipid peroxidation assay. Antiproliferative activity was evaluated using xCELLigence RTCA instrument on two tumor cell lines; HT-29 (human colon adenocarcinoma) and HeLa (human cervix carcinoma). DNA damage inhibition was evaluated using...
