Resistance of melon cultivars to Bemisia tabaci biotype B Horticultura Brasileira
Baldin,Edson LL; da Silva,José Paulo GF; Pannuti,Luiz Eduardo R.
The silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci biotype B, is currently one of the most important pests of melon, causing direct and indirect damage to plants, and significantly reducing production in the field. Due to the need for alternative methods of chemical control in melon crops, the melon cultivars AF-646, AF-682, Don Luis, Frevo, Jangada, Nilo, Vereda, Amarelo Ouro and Hales Best were assessed at field, greenhouse, and laboratory trials for resistance to whitefly B. tabaci biotype B. In general, 'Hales Best' and 'Amarelo Ouro' were the most resistant, showing oviposition non-preference against whitefly. The trichome density is associated with the variation in oviposition on the cultivars and should be further investigated in future work. These results may...

Influence of trichomes on attractiveness and ovipositional preference of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) B biotype (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) on tomato genotypes Neotropical Entomology
Oriani,Maria A de G; Vendramim,José D.
Brazil is one of the world's largest tomato producer, but considerable part of the production is lost due to the attack of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) B biotype. Resistant germoplasm plants can be an important method for B. tabaci control in integrated pest management approaches. The attractiveness and ovipositional preference of B. tabaci for 17 tomato genotypes were evaluated in a free-choice test. Trials were set up in a randomized block design with ten replicates. Each replicate (one tomato plant per pot) was placed in a cage (80 x 50 x 50 cm) and infested with 1,000 adults during four days. Linear correlation tests were applied between the number of insects and eggs and number of trichomes in each tomato genotype. LA716, LA444-1 and PI134418 genotypes were...

Resistance of sugarcane cultivars to Diatraea saccharalis PAB
Dinardo-Miranda,Leila Luci; Anjos,Ivan Antônio dos; Costa,Viviane Pereira da; Fracasso,Juliano Vilela.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the oviposition preference of Diatraea saccharalis and the effect of ten sugarcane cultivars on larval development. Oviposition preference was assessed under greenhouse conditions by three releases of couples of moths, with subsequent counting of egg masses and eggs per plant. In order to evaluate the effect of the cultivars on larval development, each plant was infected with about 150 eggs, and, 29 days later, the total number of internodes, number of bored internodes, number of life forms found, larval and pupal weight and length, and the width of larval head capsule were evaluated. The cultivars IACSP94-2101 and IACSP96-2042, the least preferred by D. saccharalis for oviposition, and IACSP94-2094, the most...

DEVELOPMENT OF Tetranychus urticae KOCH (ACARI: TETRANYCHIDAE) IN DIFFERENT STRAWBERRY CULTIVARS Rev. Bras. Frutic.
KARLEC,FÁBIO; DUARTE,ADRIANE DA FONSECA; OLIVEIRA,ANA CLÁUDIA BARNECHE DE; CUNHA,UEMERSON SILVA DA.
ABSTRACT Two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, is considered the main pest in strawberry crop. The control of this species is hampered by the low efficiency of products currently used, occurrence of populations resistant to acaricides and high reproductive potential of this pest. This leads to the use of pesticides and increased agrochemical residues in fruits. The use of resistant cultivars is considered the ideal control method because they maintain mite populations below levels of economic damage, minimize the environmental impact of pesticides at no extra cost to the farmer, and serve as an auxiliary tool in integrated pest management. In this sense, this study evaluated the resistance of strawberry cultivars to T. urticae by studying the...

Biology of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) B biotype (Hemiptera, Aleyrodidae) on tomato genotypes Scientia Agricola
Oriani,Maria Auxiliadora de Godoy; Vendramim,José Djair; Vasconcelos,Cristina Jensen.
Brazil is one of the main tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) producers worldwide. Nevertheless, considerable part of the production is lost due to Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) B biotype attacks. Resistant plants can be an important method for controlling this pest in an integrated pest management. Tests for evaluating some biological aspects of B. tabaci were carried out on 18 tomato genotypes, in controlled laboratory greenhouse conditions. Thirty-day-old plants placed in plastic cages were infested with 20 whitefly pairs each, for 24 h. The development of at least 30 eggs in three leaflets per plant (repetition) was observed until adult emergence. The development period of insects grown in LA1335, PI365928 and LA722 genotypes took three days longer when compared to...

Resistance mechanisms of sugarcane cultivars to spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata Scientia Agricola
Dinardo-Miranda,Leila Luci; Fracasso,Juliano Vilela; Perecin,Dilermando; Oliveira,Mariana Cecília de; Lopes,Diego Olympio Peixoto; Izeppi,Tiago Sabongi; Anjos,Ivan Antonio dos.
ABSTRACT The spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata (Stål) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) is one of the most important pests of sugarcane in Brazil. Measures for population control are currently restricted to the use of chemical insecticides and fungus Metarhizium anisopliae, in part because very little information exists regarding resistance of sugarcane cultivars. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate resistance mechanisms of 12 different sugarcane cultivars to M. fimbriolata to provide information for growers for pest management. Isolated buds of each cultivar were planted in pots and kept in a greenhouse for approximately three months. The pots were then moved to climate test chambers (26 ± 1 ºC; 70 ± 10 % relative humidity; 12 h photoperiod) to carry...

No-choice ovipositional nonpreference of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) B biotype on tomato genotypes Scientia Agricola
Oriani,Maria Auxiliadora de Godoy; Vendramim,José Djair; Vasconcelos,Cristina Jensen.
Brazil is one of the main tomato producers worldwide. Nevertheless, 40 to 70% of the production is lost due to Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) B biotype attacks. Resistant plant germplasm can be an important method for controlling this pest in an integrated pest management program. This research aimed to evaluate the no-choice ovipositional preference of B. tabaci B biotype on 18 tomato genotypes with different densities and types of trichomes testing two screening techniques and to determine the influence of trichomes on whitefly ovipositional preference. Two methods of confinement experiments were used. Leaflets detached from the upper third part of the tomato plants (first experiment) and 30-day-old plants (second experiment) were infested with whiteflies...

Nonpreference of the lace bug Leptopharsa heveae Drake & Poor (Heteroptera: Tingidae) for rubber tree clones Anais da SEB
Lara,Fernando M.; Tanzini,Marcel R..
To determine the resistance of rubber tree clones (Hevea brasiliensis) to Leptopharsa heveae Drake and Poor (Heteroptera: Tingidae) a trial was held in Itiquira, MT, in 1994/95 by comparing the following clones: AVROS 2037, Fx 4037, GT 1, HARBEL, IAC 207, IAN 4493, IAN 717, IAN 873, RO 38, and RO 46. Free choice and no choice trials involving preference for oviposition and feeding were carried out under field and laboratory conditions. The symptoms caused by the insects, number of excrements, number of eggs/female/leaflet, mortality rate, and number of insects/leaflet were scored. The results showed that clones Fx 4037, RO 38 and RO 46 were resistant by nonpreference for feeding and oviposition, whereas GT and IAN 873 were the most susceptible.
