Explosive breeding in tropical anurans: environmental triggers, community composition and acoustic structure ArchiMer
Ulloa, Juan Sebastian; Aubin, Thierry; Llusia, Diego; Courtois, Elodie A.; Fouquet, Antoine; Gaucher, Philippe; Pavoine, Sandrine; Sueur, Jerome.
Background: Anurans largely rely on acoustic communication for sexual selection and reproduction. While multiple studies have focused on the calling activity patterns of prolonged breeding assemblages, species that concentrate their reproduction in short-time windows, explosive breeders, are still largely unknown, probably because of their ephemeral nature. In tropical regions, multiple species of explosive breeders may simultaneously aggregate leading to massive, mixed and dynamic choruses. To understand the environmental triggers, the phenology and composition of these choruses, we collected acoustic and environmental data at five ponds in French Guiana during a rainy season, assessing acoustic communities before and during explosive breeding events....

Species composition and reproductive modes of anurans from a transitional Amazonian forest, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bitar,Youszef O. C.; Pinheiro,Leandra P. C.; Abe,Pedro S.; Santos-Costa,Maria C..
The aim of the present study was to describe the species composition and reproductive modes of an anuran community from a transition area between the Amazonia and Cerrado biomes. Data were collected in habitats exhibiting different degrees of anthropogenic degradation. The community (35 species) identified during the present study presented a larger number of reproductive modes when compared with those from Cerrado communities, but smaller than those of other sites in the Amazon. While all nine modes were recorded in the gallery forests of local rivers and streams, anthropogenic habitats (rubber tree orchards and soybean fields) were occupied only by species adapted to environments where humidity is low, typical of the Cerrado. Overall, the anuran fauna of...

Anurans of the sandy coastal plains of the Lagamar Paulista, state of São Paulo, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Zina,Juliana; Prado,Cynthia Peralta de Almeida; Brasileiro,Cinthia Aguirre; Haddad,Célio Fernando Baptista.
Insular habitats are considered ideal for biogeographic studies, as they represent almost closed habitats with known formation timelines. Although São Paulo state in Brazil has a large number of continental and oceanic islands, few studies have examined the composition of the fauna in each locality. These studies are crucial to determine the community structure and to make biogeographic and phylogenetic inferences. From February 2007 to January 2009, we surveyed the anuran community of sandy coastal plains in four municipalities of the Lagamar Paulista: Cananéia, Ilha Comprida, Iguape and Pariquera-Açu, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. This region is located in the Cananéia-Iguape estuary complex, comprising three continental islands: Ilha de Cananéia,...
