Occurrence of Sporozoa-like microorganisms in the digestive gland of various species of Strombidae ArchiMer
Volland, Jean-marie; Frenkiel, Liliane; Aldana Aranda, Dalila; Gros, Olivier.
The article discusses research on the presence of sporozoa-like microorganisms in the digestive gland of various species of Strombidae. One research by Gros, Frenkiel and Aldana Aranda described the digestive gland of Strombus gigas Linnaeus as having an assemblage of tubules and ducts. Another study found the occurrence of intracellular microorganisms believed to be the various life cycle stages of Apicomplexa.

New Isospora and Host Species in Brazilian Passerines Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Barreto,C; Vilela,DAR; Houri,BF; Lara,LB; Torres,ACD; Silva,ASG; Castro Filho,RPL; Costa,CS; Martins,NRS.
ABSTRACT Normal passerines (n=216) were evaluated for oocysts of Isospora in feces at the Triage Center for Wild Animals (CETAS, IBAMA, Belo Horizonte; August 21 to September 21, 2012). The positive samples with oocysts represented 13.0% of Cardinalidae (n=23), 11.2% of Emberizidae (n=107), 50% of Icteridae (n=10) and 60.3% of Thraupidae (n=68). The probability of fecal oocysts attributable to the host in Thraupidae is higher than in Cardinalidae, Emberizidae, Fringillidae and Turdidae, but similar to Icteridae. No oocysts were found in Fringillidae and Turdidae. Within Thraupidae, Isospora was for the first time described in Paroaria dominicana and Schistochlamys ruficapillus and within Icteridae, in Gnorimopsar chopi. Saltator similis presented a higher...

Distribución geográfica, prevalencia e intensidad de las infecciones de Gregarina ronderosi (Eugregarinorida: Gregarinidae) en Dichroplus elongatus (Orthoptera: Acrididae) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Bardi,Christian; Lange,Carlos E..

Secretory organelles of pathogenic protozoa Anais da ABC (AABC)
Souza,Wanderley de.
Secretory processes play an important role on the biology and life cycles of parasitic protozoa. This review focus on basic aspects, from a cell biology perspective, of the secretion of (a) micronemes, rhoptries and dense granules in members of the Apicomplexa group, where these organelles are involved in the process of protozoan penetration into the host cell, survival within the parasitophorous vacuole and subsequent egress from the host cell, (b) the Maurer's cleft in Plasmodium, a structure involved in the secretion of proteins synthesized by the intravacuolar parasite and transported through vesicles to the erythrocyte surface, (c) the secretion of macromolecules into the flagellar pocket of trypanosomatids, and (d) the secretion of proteins which...

Investigação de anticorpos contra Sarcocystis neurona e Sarcocystis cruzi em equinos Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Antonello,A. M.; Pivoto,F. L.; Camillo,G.; Braunig,P.; Sangioni,L. A.; Pompermayer,E.; Venturini,M. C.; Vogel,F.S.F..
ABSTRACTSarcocystis neurona is the primary agent for Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM), important neurological disease characterized by behavior or muscular changes, that impairs animal performance and husbandry. Sarcocystis cruzi is a pathogen related to myositis in cattle. Although related the life cycles of the parasites are distinct. S. neurona has opossums (Didelphis spp.) and S. cruzi, dogs as definitive hosts. However, S. neurona and S. cruzi may undergo cross-reactivity in serological tests, interfering on results of EPM ante-mortem diagnostic tests. In the present study, serology of 189 mares was performed by indirect immunofluorescence antibody test, using antigens of S. neurona and S. cruzi in order to assess the exposure degree of...

Vitamin B1 and B6 in the malaria parasite: requisite or dispensable? BJMBR
Wrenger,C.; Knöckel,J.; Walter,R.D.; Müller,I.B..
Vitamins are essential compounds mainly involved in acting as enzyme co-factors or in response to oxidative stress. In the last two years it became apparent that apicomplexan parasites are able to generate B vitamers such as vitamin B1 and B6 de novo. The biosynthesis pathways responsible for vitamin generation are considered as drug targets, since both provide a high degree of selectivity due to their absence in the human host. This report updates the current knowledge about vitamin B1 and B6 biosynthesis in malaria and other apicomplexan parasites. Owing to the urgent need for novel antimalarials, the significance of the biosynthesis and salvage of these vitamins is critically discussed in terms of parasite survival and their exploitation for drug...

Natural Sarcocystis gigantea infection in sheep from Southern Brazil Ciência Rural
Damboriarena,Pedro Araujo; Silveira,Caroline Silva; Morais,Raissa Moreira; Anjos,Bruno Leite.
ABSTRACT: Protozoal diseases caused by species of Sarcocystiscan cause serious damage in sheep flocks, inducing decreased growth conversion rates and partial or complete loss of carcasses at the slaughterhouse. This article describes an outbreak of Sarcocystis giganteainfection in sheep slaughtered in a farm in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Between July and September 2013, three sheep showed multiple nodules in the esophagus that were microscopically characterized as encapsulated cysts filled with elongated, basophilic, nucleated structures morphologically consistent with S. giganteabradyzoites. Diagnosis was made based on the epidemiological, macroscopic, and microscopic findings. This is the first report of this infection in sheep in Rio Grande do...
