Biofilter efficiency of Eichhornia crassipes in wastewater treatment of fish farming in Amazonia: Eficiencia de Eichhornia crassipes como biofiltro en el tratamiento de aguas residuales de la piscicultura en el Amazonas Phyton
Rubim,MAL; Isolino Sampaio,PR; Parolin,P.
Fish is a very important part of the human diet in Amazonia. Near the growing cities, fish populations and individual size have decreased over the past decades. Alternatives to traditional and industrial fishing arise, including fish farming. Strategies to minimize the impact of fish farms on the environment are needed to have a regular and healthy fsh supply. This is to avoid a reduction of biodiversity, a depletion of natural resources, and/or the induction of significant changes in the structure and functioning of adjacent ecosystems. Very little research has been performed on management of efluents as to maintain the quality of water resources. The present study aimed at testing the efficiency of the Amazonian aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia crassipes as...

Growth of Hymenaea stigonocarpa as a function of the addition of residues in degraded soil AGRIAMBI
Mizobata,Kellian K. G. S.; Santos,Cinthia M.; Maltoni,Kátia L.; Faria,Gláucia A.; Cassiolato,Ana M. R..
ABSTRACT In areas where soil surface horizons were removed, the main edaphic problems are reduced amounts of organic matter and nutrients. Revegetation, especially with native species, has been indicated to recover these areas. Under this perspective, the present research has been developed to evaluate the contribution of organic and agro-industrial residues, as conditioners of soil fertility and their effects on initial growth of 'Jatobá-do-cerrado' seedlings. The treatments consisted of 4 agro-industrial residue doses (0, 15, 30 and 45 Mg ha-1) and 4 organic residue doses (0, 8, 16 and 32 Mg ha-1), with 16 treatments and 10 replicates. After 8 months of development, the soil was evaluated for phosphorus, organic matter, hydrogen potential, potassium,...

Richness, abundance and microhabitat use by Ardeidae (Aves: Pelecaniformes) during one seasonal cycle in the floodplain lakesof the lower Amazon River Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ferreira,Giulianne Sampaio; Santos,Danilo Augusto Almeida dos; Lopes,Edson Varga.
ABSTRACT The Amazon floodplains become periodically submerged as result of seasonal changes in the water levels throughout the year. These changes influence the availability of microhabitats and consequently the abundance of organisms in these ecosystems. In this study we investigated 1) how changes in the water level affect the richness and abundance of ardeid birds in the lowland floodplain lakes of the lower Amazon River, and 2) the microhabitats used by these birds throughout the seasonal cycle. Ten lakes were surveyed at each of the four phases of the seasonal cycle. In total, 3,280 individuals of 11 species were recorded. Of these, eight species occurred in the four phases, and three were observed in one or two phases. In the analysis including the...

Scientometric analysis of energetic ecology: primary production of aquatic macrophytes - DOI: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v31i4.5139 Biological Sciences
Lolis, Solange de Fátima; Fundação Universidade Federal do Tocantins; Sanches-Marques, Angela Maria Marques; UEM; Arruda Reis, Sebastiana Lindaura; UFMT; Benedito, Evanilde; UEM.
The objective of this work was to perform a temporal quantitative analysis, using the scientometric technique, considering the number of citations that the terms Primary Production of Aquatic Macrophytesand Energetic Ecology received in a 50-year period (1956 to 2006). The study related 189 papers published in 26 magazines. It was verified that researchers of several nationalities are working on the proposed themes, with a predominance of those from developed countries (USA and Germany). In Brazil, production on these themes, although small, coincides with the results obtained for other themes analyzed using the same research technique. This fact indicates that greater efforts should be made in the search for more intense scientific production in the...

Effect of Typha domingensis cutting: response of benthic macroinvertebrates and macrophyte regeneration Biota Neotropica
Silveira,Thiago Cesar Lima; Rodrigues,Gilberto Gonçalves; Souza,Gabriela Peixoto Coelho de; Würdig,Norma Luiza.
Wetlands are important because they have high biodiversity and are considered, by environmental agencies, permanently protected areas due to their importance to conservation. In Southern Brazil the aquatic macrophyte Typha domingensis is harvested to be used in the manufacture of handicraft, being an important income source to small farmers. This work aims to test the cut effect of T. domingensis on benthic macroinvertebrates as well as on macrophyte regeneration. These phenomena were analyzed in small areas (1 m²) in a T. domingensis stand by comparing cut treatments and control treatments. Macroinvertebrate were sampled with a corer in the following time sequence after the cut event in both treatments: one day, 26 days, 60 days, 89 days, and 182 days....

Magalhães,Karine Matos; Lima,Maria Cecília Santana de; Santos,Ednilza Maranhão; Correia,Jozélia Maria de Sousa; Silva,Ana Carolina Borges Lins e.
Abstract: We present a checklist for the aquatic biodiversity from two reservoirs within a PPBio (Biodiversity Research Program) site in a peri-urban forest fragment, the Dois Irmãos State Park (PEDI), in Pernambuco, Brazil. We obtained the data via extensive field collection and information from a specialized literature survey. We recorded 397 species in 156 families; the animal was the most abundant group (140 species) followed by fungi taxa (103), periphyton (69), aquatic macrophytes (44), and terrestrial plants in flooded areas (41). This review reflects different sample efforts toward selected groups and allows the definition of a long-term protocol for guiding new research based on the identified knowledge gaps revealed. Future ecological research...

Short term fluctuations and succession trends in tropical floodplain vegetation measured by correspondence analysis BABT
Santos,Anderson Medeiros dos; Thomaz,Sidinei Magela.
The aim of this work was to study the aquatic macrophytes community development to distinguish the fluctuations from succession trends at different temporal and spatial scales in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. The samples were collected quarterly from May 2000 to March 2002 in seven lakes with different degrees of connectivity from the main river channel and analyzed by between-class correspondence analysis. It was difficult to establish any pattern of community development at local scale but at a higher level of organization, disconnected lakes were characterized by fluctuation of the floristic composition. Connected lakes showed a straight trajectory, indicating that succession was occurring at these sites. Probably the income of propagules and...

Influence of water level fluctuation on the mortality and aboveground biomass of the aquatic macrophyte Eleocharis interstincta (VAHL) roemer et schults BABT
Santos,Anderson Medeiros dos; Esteves,Francisco de Assis.
The goal of this study was to study the biometric alterations of Eleocharis interstincta in response to water level fluctuations in Cabiúnas Lagoon, located on the northern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, in the municipality of Macaé. Three quadrats of 0.0625 m² were harvested every two weeks from June/1997 to June/1998; samples were separated into stems, dead stems (detritus) and rhizome; lenghted, dried and weighted. The water level fluctuated seasonally in the macrophyte stand with two periods of drawdown. The first period occurred naturally at the end of winter and beginning of spring, when rainfall in the area was normally lowest. The second period of drawdown was the result of an artificial breaching of the sandbar that isolate the lagoon from...

Methane concentration in water column and in pore water of a coastal lagoon (Cabiúnas lagoon, Macaé, RJ, Brazil) BABT
Fonseca,André Luiz dos Santos; Minello,Murilo; Marinho,Claudio Cardoso; Esteves,Francisco de Assis.
The aim of this study was to evaluate methane concentration in water column and pore water at limnetic and littoral regions of a coastal lagoon. At the littoral region samples were taken from three monospecific macrophytes stands (Typha domingensis, Eleocharis interstincta and Potamogeton stenostachys). The methane concentration in the pore water at the littoral region was higher than the concentration found at the limnetic region in each fraction of the sediment. The higher methane concentration in the superficial fraction of the sediment (0-2 cm) was shown at the P. stenostachys stand (3.7 mM). It was the only significantly different (p<0.05) from the limnetic region. The pore water methane concentration increased with depth at the aquatic macrophytes...

Aquatic macrophytes of Itaipu Reservoir, Brazil: survey of species and ecological considerations BABT
Thomaz,Sidinei Magela; Bini,Luis Maurício; Souza,Maria Conceição de; Kita,Kazue Kawakita; Camargo,Antonio Fernando Monteiro.
In a survey of the aquatic macrophytes of the Itaipu Reservoir, we identified 62 taxa in 25 families and 42 genera. The highest number taxa was observed for the emergent macrophytes (40 taxa). Reduced fluctuation in water level, increased light penetration, and sediment enrichment by nutrients and organic matter following the formation of the reservoir favored the appearance of a species-rich community of submerged macrophytes (23% of the taxa identified). The aquatic macrophytes were found mainly near the mouths of the main tributaries of the reservoir, in shallow area of depth less than 2 meters. In addition to the shallow depth, the greater nutrient input from the tributaries and relative protection from wind explained this distribution. Among the...

Influence of photoperiod on the uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus in the water by Eichhornia crassipes and Salvinia auriculata BJB
PETRUCIO,M. M.; ESTEVES,F. A..
The main goal of this research was to quantify the concentrations of total and ammonium N, nitrate, total and soluble P in the water in the presence of Eichhornia crassipes and Salvinia auriculata, which were submitted to two different photoperiods in a 24 hours incubation period in the laboratory. The macrophytes were incubated in plastic vials of approximately 1.5 litters, with a previously prepared solution with NH4NO3, NH4Cl, and KH2PO4. Eichhornia crassipes showed the highest average rate of reduction of all the nutrients analysed in relation to Salvinia auriculata. The largest photoperiod reflected in a higher average rate of reduction of nutrients, in both plants. Therefore, we may expect that in some periods of the year (e.g. summer), the aquatic...

Uptake rates of nitrogen and phosphorus in the water by Eichhornia crassipes and Salvinia auriculata BJB
PETRUCIO,M. M.; ESTEVES,F. A..
The main goal of this research was to survey information about the physiology of Eichhornia crassipes and Salvinia auriculata and their capacity to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from the environment, after quantifying the concentrations of the nitrogen (NO3-N, NH4-N and total-N) and phosphorus (PO4-P and total-P) compounds in the water. The macrophytes were incubated in the laboratory in plastic vials of approximately 1.5 litters containing a previously prepared solution of NH4NO3, NH4Cl and KH2PO4. Eichhornia crassipes exhibited the highest rates of nutrient reduction and the concentrations of NO3-N, NH4-N and PO4-P in the water influenced the uptake rates of nitrogen and phosphorus of the E. crassipes and S. auriculata. This information can help to...

Cellulase activity and dissolved organic carbon release from lignocellulose macrophyte-derived in four trophic conditions BJM
Bottino,Flávia; Cunha-Santino,Marcela Bianchessi; Bianchini Jr.,Irineu.
Abstract Considering the importance of lignocellulose macrophyte-derived for the energy flux in aquatic ecosystems and the nutrient concentrations as a function of force which influences the decomposition process, this study aims to relate the enzymatic activity and lignocellulose hydrolysis in different trophic statuses. Water samples and two macrophyte species were collected from the littoral zone of a subtropical Brazilian Reservoir. A lignocellulosic matrix was obtained using aqueous extraction of dried plant material (≈40 °C). Incubations for decomposition of the lignocellulosic matrix were prepared using lignocelluloses, inoculums and filtered water simulating different trophic statuses with the same N:P ratio. The particulate organic carbon and...
