The giant otter, Pteronura brasiliensis Zimmermann 1780 (Carnivora, Mustelidae, Lutrinae), was widely distributed in South America but stable populations are now only found in the Pantanal and Amazon regions and the species is classified as endangered. There is only one recognized species of giant otter, although two subspecies of doubtful value have also been cited in the literature. We present the first karyotype of four captive P. brasiliensis specimens, all of which posses 2n = 38 chromosomes as 14M+8SM+6ST+8A and one pair of sexual chromosomes. An heteromorphic secondary constriction, associated with the nucleolar organizer region (NOR), was seen on the long arms of chromosome pair 17. The C-banding technique revealed heterochromatin in the... |

S. Tomé and Príncipe archipelago has been reported as a possible breeding ground for humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) since the whaling period. More recently, the sightings of humpbacks whales have become more frequent off the S. Tomé Island which may indicate a recovery of the populations or the whales returning to a former concentration area of the Southern Hemisphere population. Our objective was to study the occurrence of humpback whales group types and surface activities in this area. Between July 2002 and January 2003, a total of 110 boat-based surveys were conducted around the S. Tomé Island and Rolas Island. When we sighted the animals, recordings of GPS positions, group size, group composition and activity were made. Single whales and... |

Available information from literature and the results of surveys and studies conducted between 1986 and 1995 on the distribution and biology of trichechus senegalensis show that, the West African manatee occurs in the middle and lower reaches of rivers from Senegal to the Quanza in Angola (Powell, 1996; Dodman ,1999). The same study reported that manatees are common in Gabon and the country may contain one of the highest densities of the species in Africa. The last survey we conducted in the bassin of Ogooué River and in the interconnecting lakes between Port-Gentil and Lambaréné verified the existence of trichechus senegalensis, and differents informations collected around all Gabon by one of us confirm the presence of specie all over water plans with... |

A second project of the West African Cetacean Research and Conservation Programme (WAFCET-2) was implemented in Senegal and The Gambia, from December 1999 till December 2001. It generally aimed at collecting information on the conservation status of coastal cetaceans, with emphasis on the Atlantic humpback dolphin, and support activities to improve it. A base for the recently formed ngo COREWAM (Conservation and Research of West African Aquatic Mammals) was made operative near Dakar. Nineteen new cranial specimens, representing six cetacean species, were added to the COREWAM reference collection: short-snouted and long-snouted common dolphins (n= 9), bottlenose dolphins (n= 3), Atlantic humpback dolphin (n= 1), harbour porpoise (n= 3), ordinary Bryde’s... |
