Allelopathic testing of Pedicularis kansuensis (Scrophulariaceae) on seed germination and seedling growth of two native grasses in the Tibetan plateau Phyton
Shang,ZH; Xu,SG.
Abstract. Pedicularis kansuensis is a dominating poisonous weed, and it might have allelopathic effects on other native grasses in alpine meadows. An experiment was conducted to examine a range of concentrations of aqueous whole plant extracts (25, 12.5, 2.5, 1.25, 0.25 and 0.0 g/L) of P. kansuensis, prepared at the flowering stage on seed germination and seedling growth of two native grasses (Poa pratensis and Elymus nutans). High concentrations of aqueous extracts of P. kansuensis inhibited seed germination and seedling growth of P. pratensis (p< 0.05). Most aqueous extracts of P. kansuensis had a stimulatory (p< 0.05) effect on E. nutans. Our results suggest that the allelopathic ecology of P. kansuensis on other native grasses needs further...

AUTOTOXICITY IN TOUGH LOVEGRASS ( Eragrostis plana ) Planta Daninha
FAVARETTO,A.; SCHEFFER-BASSO,S.M.; PEREZ,N.B..
ABSTRACT Autotoxicity in tough lovegrass has been analyzed in the field, but has never been tested in allelopathy bioassays. Therefore, this study aimed to verify and compare the autotoxicity of leaves and roots from aqueous extracts of tough lovegrass on its germination and early seedling growth. Extracts of green leaves (GL), senescent leaves (SL), and roots (R) at concentrations of 0.05, 0.15, and 0.25 g mL-1 were analyzed on how they affected seed germination and seedling growth. The extracts, regardless of the source or concentration of the material used, have significantly reduced germination percentage, index of germination speed, and root growth of seedlings of tough lovegrass. Effects on mean germination time and shoot length varied according to...

Phytotoxic Activity of Parthenium Against Wheat and Canola Differ With Plant Parts and Bioassays Techniques Planta Daninha
KHALIQ,A.; ASLAM,F; MATLOOB,A; JAVAID,A; TANVEER,A; HUSSAIN,S.; IHSAN,M.Z.
Phytotoxic effects of invasive weed Parthenium hysterophorus were studied by using whole plant, leaf and root aqueous extracts at 0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10% (w/v) concentrations against germination and early seedling growth of wheat and canola. Studies were carried out both in Petri plates with filter paper as substratum placed in controlled conditions and soil-filled plastic pots placed in open environments. Pronounced variation was noted for phytotoxic activity of different plant parts of parthenium, aqueous extract concentrations, test species, and bioassay techniques. Aqueous parthenium extracts either inhibited or delayed the germination and suppressed seedling growth of test species over control. For both test species, all the germination attributes...

Allelopathic potential of Gleichenella pectinata (Willd.) Ching on weed plant species Acta Botanica
Voltarelli,Valquiria Marin; Ribeiro,Jose Pedro Nepomuceno; Lima,Maria Inês Salgueiro.
The goal of this paper was to determine the allelopathic potential of Gleichenella pectinata on three weed species (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv (Poaceae), Ipomoea grandifolia (Dammer) O'Donell (Convolvulaceae) and Euphorbia heterophylla L. (Euphorbiaceae)). The experimental design was entirely randomized, with six replicates. The target plant responses were analyzed individually (percentage and average time of germination of the seeds and initial growth of seedlings) or combined, using the Global Effect Index. The extracts had a low effect on the percentage and average time of seed germination, but inhibited the seedling growth. The combined analysis revealed that almost all treatments caused inhibition. This analysis also showed the differences...

Assessment of allelopathic properties of Aloe ferox Mill. on turnip, beetroot and carrot Biol. Res.
Arowosegbe,Sunday; Afolayan,Anthony J.
Turnip (Brassica rapa var. rapa L.), beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) and carrot (Daucus carota L.) are common vegetables in South Africa. The allelopathic potential of aqueous leaf and root extracts of Aloe ferox Mill.- a highly valued medicinal plant- was evaluated against seed germination and seedling growth of the three vegetables in Petri dish experiments. The extracts were tested at concentrations of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mg/mL. Leaf extract concentrations above 4 mg/mL inhibited the germination of all the crops, while the root extract had no significant effect on germination irrespective of concentration. Interestingly, the lowest concentration of leaf extract stimulated root length elongation of beetroot by 31.71%. Other concentrations significantly...

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic degenerative diseases, and it is estimated to increase worldwide to around 415 million and to impact 642 million in 2040. Research shows that some plants are sources of bioactive compounds against diabetes. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the oral toxicity and the hypoglycemic effect of the aqueous extract of the leaves of Cnidoscolus quercifolius Pohl. Diabetes was induced in Swiss mice with streptozotocin and the mice were treated with an aqueous extract of C. quercifolius leaves for a period of 30 days. Phytochemical analysis showed that the extract was rich in flavonoids, catechins and triterpenoid, which did not show any mortality and behavioral alterations in mice treated with 200,...
