Evidence of ventilation changes in the Arabian Sea during the late Quaternary: Implication for denitrification and nitrous oxide emission ArchiMer
Pichevin, Laetitia; Bard, Edouard; Martinez, Philippe; Billy, Isabelle.
Modern seawater profiles of oxygen, nitrate deficit, and nitrogen isotopes reveal the spatial decoupling of summer monsoon-related productivity and denitrification maxima in the Arabian Sea (AS) and raise the possibility that winter monsoon and/or ventilation play a crucial role in modulating denitrification in the northeastern AS, both today and through the past. A new high-resolution 50-ka record of delta(15) N from the Pakistan margin is compared to five other denitrification records distributed across the AS. This regional comparison unveils the persistence of east-west heterogeneities in denitrification intensity across millennial-scale climate shifts and throughout the Holocene. The oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) experienced east-west swings across...

Structural characteristics of marine sedimentary humic acids by CP/MAS C-13 NMR spectroscopy ArchiMer
Sardessai, S; Wahidullah, S.
Humic acids from sediments of different depositional environments have been studied by solid-state C-13 NMR and the results compared with the traditional wet chemical analysis. Results obtained are well in agreement with the previous literature reports that the carboxyl content measured by NMR correlated better with the total acidity, as well as with the carboxyl content obtained by wet chemical analysis after correction for amino acid carboxyl is made (following hydrolysis of peptide bonds). There is a large discrepancy between the NMR and wet chemical measurements of phenolics. NMR spectra was also indicative of branched paraffinic structures in the humic acids from the Arabian Sea; the humic acids of sediments from estuarine and coastal areas of the Bay...

Dynamique de bord ouest en mer d'Arabie ArchiMer
Vic, Clement.
This PhD aims to investigate some western boundary processes in the Arabian Sea : (i) the life cycle of the socalled Great Whirl, a persistent mesoscale eddy; (ii) the dynamics of the Persian Gulf outflow, a marginal sea dense outflow; and (iii) the seasonal Oman upwelling, a coastal upwelling forced by summermonsoonal winds. The cornerstone of all these phenomena is their locationat a western boundary, which makes then being influenced by both localforcing (e.g., monsoonal winds) and remote forcing (Rossby waves and wesward drifting eddies). Specifically, the later are expected to impact the western boundary dynamics since the low latitude of the Arabian Sea implies a fast westward propagation of long Rossby waves and eddies. Moreover, waves are...

Uranium in the Arabian Sea: role of denitrification in controlling its distribution ArchiMer
Rengarajan, R; Sarin, Mm; Krishnaswami, S.
A total of 61 samples, from six vertical profiles between surface and 1800 m from the Arabian Sea, have been analysed for uranium concentration to assess its behaviour in oxic and sub-oxic waters. These samples cover a wide range of dissolved oxygen concentration, from 0.14 to 230 muM. Uranium concentration in most of the samples fall in the range of 3.2 +/- 0.2 mug l(-1). In general, uranium exhibits a conservative behaviour in the Arabian Sea water column and denitrification processes do not seem to influence its abundance. The mean uranium/salinity ratio in waters with dissolved oxygen <2 muM is (9.17 +/- 0.15) x 10(-8) g g(-1), nearly identical to the ratio (9.22 +/- 0.27) x 10(-8) g g(-1) in waters with dissolved oxygen >100 muM and in waters...

Mesoscale dynamics in the Arabian Sea and a focus on the Great Whirl life cycle: A numerical investigation using ROMS ArchiMer
Vic, Clement; Roullet, Guillaume; Carton, Xavier; Capet, X..
The Great Whirl (GW) is a persistent anticyclonic mesoscale eddy that is observed seasonally in the Arabian Sea during a period embedding the 3 months of the southwest monsoon (June–July–August) at a quasi-steady location. Its dynamics remain unclear despite it being one of the largest coherent vortices in the world ocean. Realistic regional numerical experiments using ROMS are performed to investigate the life cycle of the GW, which is not well resolved by sparse available in situ measurements in the region. Using a set of sensitivity experiments and an accurate temporal characterization of the eddy properties (including position, radius, depth, and vorticity) we (i) confirm the role of basin-scale downwelling Rossby waves in the GW generation, (ii)...

An emended description and phylogeny of the little-known Prorocentrum sipadanense Mohammad-Noor, Daugbjerg & Moestrup (Prorocentrales, Dinophyceae) from the Indian Ocean, Oman ArchiMer
Saburova, Maria; Chomerat, Nicolas.
A small Prorocentrum species was found during a pilot taxonomic survey of marine benthic dinoflagellates in the northwestern Arabian Sea, Oman. Based on the study of cells from natural samples and laboratory cultures using light and scanning electron microscopy, this taxon is attributed to the little-known Prorocentrum sipadanense, recorded so far only from East Malaysia. The description of this species has been emended to include details of internal cell structure, composition of its periflagellar area and intraspecific variability in size, shape and pore pattern. Round to oval or ovoid cells of P. sipadanese are surrounded by a prominent marginal ridge and are 17.9–23.9 µm long and 15.0–19.8 µm wide, with a foveate to reticulate thecal plate surface and...

Role of fronts in the formation of Arabian Sea barrier layers during summer monsoon ArchiMer
De Boyer Montegut, Clement; Durand, Fabien; Bourdalle-badie, Romain; Blanke, Bruno.
The barrier layer (BL) - a salinity stratification embedded in the upper warm layer - is a common feature of the tropical oceans. In the northern Indian Ocean, it has the potential to significantly alter the air-sea interactions. In the present paper, we investigate the spatio-temporal structure of BL in the Arabian Sea during summer monsoon. This season is indeed a key component of the Asian climate. Based on a comprehensive dataset of Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) and Argo in situ hydrographic profiles, we find that a BL exists in the central Arabian Sea during summer. However, it is highly heterogeneous in space, and intermittent, with scales of about similar to 100 km or less and a couple of weeks. The BL patterns appear to be closely associated...

Laciniporus arabicus gen. et sp. nov. (Dinophyceae, Peridiniales), a new thecate, marine, sand-dwelling dinoflagellate from the northern Indian Ocean (Arabian Sea) ArchiMer
Saburova, Maria; Chomérat, Nicolas.
A new thecate, photosynthetic, sand‐dwelling marine dinoflagellate, Laciniporus arabicus gen. et sp. nov., is described from the subtidal sediments of the Omani coast in the Arabian Sea, northern Indian Ocean, based on detailed morphological and molecular data. Cells of L. arabicus are small (16.2‐30.1 μm long and 13.1‐23.2 μm wide), dorsoventrally compressed, with a small apical flap‐shaped projection pointing to the left. The thecal plate pattern is distinguished by minute first precingular plate and sulcus, which extends into the epitheca, with large anterior and right sulcal plates. The Kofoidian thecal tabulation is Po, X, 4′, 2a, 7′′, 6c, 6s, 5′′′, 2′′′′. Morphologically, the revealed plate pattern has an affinity to the Peridiniales, and LSU rDNA...

Biophysical isopycnic-coordinate modelling of plankton dynamics in the Arabian Sea OceanDocs
Idrisi, N.; Romanou, A.; Olascoaga, M.J..
A Nutrients-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton-Detritus (NPZD) ecosystem model is coupled to the Miami Isopycnic-Coordinate Ocean Model (MICOM) to study planktondynamics in the Arabian Sea. Experiments oriented to testing the NPZD-MICOM coupled model sensitivity to variations in several parameters are performed. Particular attention is paid to the rates of detritus sinking and maximum phytoplankton growth rate. The coarse features of the blooms are captured by all the experiments considered, and agree with earlier models for the biological activity of the region. Intensity, duration, and peaks of the blooms are found to be quite sensitive to the parameter choices. The existence of an offshore deep chlorophyll maximum in the model is found to be closely related to...
