This study is an attempt to produce an assessment of the impact of shrimp aquaculture in the Mekong Delta (Viet Nam) on mangrove ecosystems. For this exercise we selected two sub-areas (Ca Mau and Tra Vinh provinces) encompassing a variety of land uses and ecological conditions. Twenty stations in Tra Vinh and 15 stations in Ca Mau have been surveyed several times from September 2000 to March 2002. Field investigations included mangrove soils studies, measurements of pH and salinity of the water, analysis of mangrove flora, and density and structure of the vegetation. Four Systeme Probatoire de l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) scenes were used for the discrimination of mangrove types and for the delineation of landscape units. For the first time, five... |

Several well-preserved arthropod faunas have been studied in Mexico during the past few years. The purpose of the present note is to outline advances in the study of these arthropods and of their paleoenvironmental implications, from four localities. The age for these localities ranges from the Early to the Late Cretaceous. At most of these localities lithographic limestones crop out, with fish remains representing the most attractive element of study. However, arthropods constitute a very important tool for reconstructing paleoenvironment (marine crustaceans, freshwater and terrestrial insects and arachnids). Detailed studies of these assemblages will aid in our understanding of ancient coastal dynamics and the paleoecology of these unique environments. |

Catalogue of the Dutch spiders (Araneae) This new catalogue is a revised edition of the catalogue of the spiders of the Netherlands of 1980. Newly published faunistic records have been added. A total of 640 species names pass in review, 20 of which (in brackets) concern former records now removed, while 10 are questionable but unverifiable (indicated with ?). Twelve species clearly introduced and not represented by viable populations outside the special anthropogenic environments, such as greenhouses, are included in the catalogue [in square brackets]. Since 1980, 77 species have been added to the Dutch faunal spider checklist. The Netherlands house the type-localities of six nominal species, now representing three recognized species (Liocranum rutilans... |

Investigations of amphipod embryonic development have a long tradition. However, many aspects of amphipod embryology are still controversial. These concern, among others, the nature of the cleavage, the origin of the germ disc, and the mode of gastrulation. On the other hand, amphipods show the same characteristic type of invariant cell division pattern in the germ band as other malacostracans. Since amphipods seem to undergo a stereotyped pattern of early cleavage they are highly interesting for our understanding of the evolution of arthropod development. In this paper, we describe the cleavage pattern of the amphipod crustacean Orchestia cavimana from the zygote to gastrulation and the formation of the germ disc using direct observation, scanning... |

Eluma purpurascens, new for the Dutch fauna (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscoidea). The first Dutch specimen of Eluma purpurascens was found on 29 April 1994 on the Kaloot, east of Vlissingen, in the south-western province of Zeeland. One year later the species proved to be locally common along the southern coast of the Oosterschelde and three years later several hundreds mature and immature specimens were found along the southern coast of the Westerschelde and along the coast of the North Sea. So far, the species has not been found on the isle of Schouwen-Duiveland. It seems to be almost absent inland although not all sites where this species might occur have yet been visited. In this paper the morphology of Eluma purpurascens is illustrated, and some notes on... |

In this review some examples of rolling behaviour in nature are described and discussed in terms of the realised degree of wheel-like locomotion. The combination of rotation and the use of the low friction resistance of circular and smooth surfaces to transport a heavy load, as is seen in scarab beetles rolling dung pills, is the closest degree of similarity to a wheel found in nature. Populations of dung rolling scarabs may have benefited from the early domestication of large mammals in the Middle East. I suggest that an increased opportunity to observe pill rolling scarab beetles has inspired humans to invent the wheel. |

The millipede Archiboreoiulus pallidus, new to the Dutch fauna (Myriapoda: Diplopoda) Some specimens of the millipede Archiboreoiulus pallidus (Brade-Birks, 1920) were found in April 1996 in ‘het Bovenste Bos’, a deciduous forest south of Epen, in the province of Limburg. Two weeks later, a visit was paid to the collection of the Plant Protection Service and this resulted in a second record of this species. This specimen was found in June 1977 in an agricultural field near Maastricht, about 15 km west of Epen (province of Limburg). This is the first record of A. pallidus for the Dutch fauna. This species is morphologically very similar to Blaniulus guttulatus. The most important characteristics in which A. pallidus differs from B. guttulatus are described... |

The expansion of Conocephalus discolor in the southern part of the province of Limburg (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) The range of Conocephalus discolor (Thunberg, 1815) in northwestern Europe and Britain has expanded substantially during the last decades. The species is known from the Netherlands since 1990 but was not found in the southern part of the province of Limburg until 1997. In 1997, triggered by an accidental find of a population in his neighbourhood, the author became highly interested and started investigating the distribution of C. discolor in these surroundings. The localities both where the species has been observed and those where it not has been found, are mapped. It became clear that the species is common between Kerkrade and Geleen. This... |
