Influence of tides and winds on fishing techniques and strategies in the Mamanguape River Estuary, Paraíba State, NE Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Bezerra,Dandara M.M.; Nascimento,Douglas M.; Ferreira,Emmanoela N.; Rocha,Pollyana D.; Mourão,José S..
This work was carried out in two small fishing communities, Barra de Mamanguape and Tramataia, Northeastern Brazil. The aim was to study these traditional fishermen's knowledge and perception about tide and wind classifications, as well as their fishing strategies and techniques. Our research methodology involved various techniques: free interviews and semi-structured ones, guided tours and direct observations. The results obtained show the fishermen's classification of the tides according to the phases of the moon: 'breaking tide', 'flushing tide', 'dead tide' and 'big tide' designated technically these last as neap tide and spring tide, respectively. Wind is also an essential factor for the fishermen to make successful catches, and they classify it...

Lima,Juliano Silva; Zappes,Camilah Antunes; Di Beneditto,Ana Paula Madeira; Zalmon,Ilana Rosental.
Abstract: The objective of this study is to describe the ethnoecological aspects, valorization, and commercialization of target species caught by artisanal fishers on the northern coast of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. The data were obtained through semi-structured interviews conducted with 60 fishers from the fishing community of Guaxindiba (21°29'S, 41°00'W), which is associated with the Z-1 fishers' colony. Eighty-nine species were cited by the fishers and 44.1% are important commercial fish in the region. The fishers cited five distinct zones used to fish: border zone (68 species), estuary (41 spp.), artificial reef (27 spp.), "malacacheta" (24 spp.), and open ocean (10 spp.). The fishery resources were classified according to their gastronomic...

Occurrence of the Pacific chupare stingray Styracura pacifica in Colombia and extension of its geographical range in the Tropical Eastern Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
Dalmau,Melissa Scheel; Velandia,Manuel Camilo; Díaz,Juan Manuel; Navia,Andrés Felipe; Mejía-Falla,Paola Andrea.
ABSTRACT The presence of the Pacific chupare stingray Styracura pacifica in the Colombian Pacific is confirmed. This species together with S. schmardae in the Atlantic are the only representatives of the Potamotrygonidae family that inhabit in marine and brackish waters. The confirmed distribution of the species was limited to the Pacific coasts of Central America, between southern Mexico and Panama; therefore, the present record extends its distribution to the Eastern Tropical Pacific by about 470 km to the south.

Les pêches artisanales de la Manche Orientale. Flottilles et ressources halieutiques ArchiMer
Lemoine, Michel; Giret, Marc.
From Normandy to Belgium bordary, the coastal fishery became during the ten last years a significant social and economic actor, which mostly lives by predominant exploitation of Eastern Channel. Recently discovering a situation of resource overexploitation and a difficult cohabitation between "metiers", these coastal fleets are in the heart of various preoccupations of managment at regional, national and european levels. Since 1985, a coordinated programme (including Boulogne and Ouistreham) allowed to progress in the knowledge of complex fisheries through : improvement of statistics, characterisation of coastal fleets and their activity, asses-ment of the knowledge on the resources. This synthesis describes, for 1987-1988, the quality of the regional...

Peche artisanale sur DCP et peche palangriere a la Reunion: antagonisme ou complementarite? ArchiMer
Tessier, E; Poisson, Francois.
More than ten years after its launching, an evaluation of the results of the FADs programme carried on in Reunion Island has been made. Its implementation and its impact on artisanal fishery in Reunion Island have been analysed. This analysis demonstrates that, following a continuously ascending phase, the production of fish caught on fads has reached a plateau. Parallel to the FAD-associated fishery, the longline fishery has developed since 1991. This type of fishery includes production units whose operating zone is bordering the FAD installation area. Analysing the evolution of the small longliner sector is based on general activity indicators (number of ships, production, fish selling prices). Besides, a synthesis of the interactions between those two...

An overview of the FADs fishery in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Morales-nin, B; Cannizzaro, L; Massuti, E; Potoschi, A; Andaloro, F.
The Mediterranean small-scale fleet is highly adaptive, showing a dynamic fishing intensity and strategy, and exploiting seasonal abundant resources. In this area, the aggregatory behaviour under floats of juvenile fish has been used since ancient times to exploit oceanic migratory species such as dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus), using Fish Aggregating anchored Devices (fads). A total of 2 300 boats are engaged in this fishery from August to December, the main fishing areas being those around Malta, Tunisia, Sicily and Majorca. The fads ( arrow right m2) are made of different cheap floating materials, and are moored in fixed places, ranging from shore waters to areas 60 miles off the coast (1 500 m depth). Each boat deploys an average of 20 to 100 fads....

La promotion des DCP a Sao Tome et Principe: une experience pedagogique pour l'adoption durable d'une innovation ArchiMer
Verdilhac De, P; Maggiorani, Jm; Debouvry, P.
A development programme for the promotion of FADs in Sao Tome and Principe has implemented an original interactive approach by granting a predominant place to the initiative of the target group and its participation in decision making. The appropriation process of the innovative fads by the beneficiaries takes place in three stages described herewith. the technical research phase. This consists of formally describing an idea in reply to an expressed or potential need. The envisaged fad type is developed and tested by the project's agents in order to obtain a technically appropriate prototype.- the research and adjustment phase. The fad is given to a small number of people to be used in real-life conditions. Reaction surveys will enable its pertinence to be...

Aggregative capacity of experimental anchored Fish Aggregating Devices (aFADs) in Northeastern Brazil revealed through electronic tagging data ArchiMer
Véras, Luísa Queiroz; Capello, Manuela; Forget, Fabien; Tolotti, Mariana Travassos; Véras, Drausio Pinheiro; Dagorn, Laurent; Hazin, Fábio Hissa.
Catches of pelagic fish associated to anchored Fish Aggregating Devices have been responsible for increases in income, fish consumption, and even cultural identity of artisanal fishing communities in many developing countries worldwide. Nonetheless, in Brazil, aFAD fishing is still poorly developed and studied. In this experiment, FADs were anchored offshore the city of Recife (Northeastern Brazil) to investigate the potential of moored buoys in the aggregation of commercially important pelagic species near the coast, as an alternative fishing site for artisanal fishers. The behavior of acoustically tagged fish was investigated to assess whether they were attracted to the FADs and how long they remained associated to them. The results indicated that,...

Le ceteau Dicologoglossa cunetata (Moreau), sa biologie et sa peche dans le sud du golfe de Gasgogne. ArchiMer
Forest, A.
This study deals with D.cuneata, a small soleid listed among the spp of NEAFC Recommendation 2 and exploited by the 'artisanal' trawlers in the South of the Bay of Biscay. The gonads/gutted fish wt ratio has been calculated throughout a yr, and shows that young Dicologoglossa are able to reproduce at age-group II. Spawning takes place during the 3rd quarter. Growth has been determined by otolith reading and length frequency analysis; Bertalanffy's and Gompertz's equations parameters have been studied, and attempts to estimate the instantaneous rate of total mortality have been made. The results are: male Z 3-5=0.74 and 0.83, female Z 3-5=0.96 and 1.35. Selectivity experiments carried out on board of R/V 'La Palagia' give a selection factor of 3.9. The...

Perspectives de developpement des DCP ancres dans les Petites Antilles. L'exemple de trois iles: Guadeloupe, Martinique et Curacao ArchiMer
Reynal, Lionel; Van Buurt, G; Taquet, Marc.
This summary tackles the development of fisheries in the Caribbean using fads. It highlights the principal causes which explain why, in spite of more than thirty years of experimenting, fishing on fads has not developed as much as had been hoped. Whereas the deep-sea production of pelagic fish by the continental countries of the region has considerably increased since the early eighties, that of the Lesser Antilles has grown more slowly. Anchored fads have given the boats of the small-scale fisheries from three islands (Guadeloupe, Martinique and Curacao) access to these pelagic resources. The various modes of development and management of the fads observed in each island are described. The first available data are used to provide some indications of the...

Quelques aspects socio-economiques de la pecherie artisanale beninoise de Pointe-Noire (Congo). ArchiMer
Gobert, Bertrand.
The foreign artisanal fishery of Pointe-Noire (Congo) significantly evolved since its beginning, in the 1950s, by the number of fishermen and canoes, as well as the fishing techniques used and by its socio-economic organization. The fishery for Sardinella by surface gill-nets, its main activity, is based on common ownership and savings, thus allowing partial reinvestment of fishing revenues, the riskier (such as bottom gill-net) being left to individual initiatives. The foreign fishery employs many Congolese fishermen, in a permanent or very occasional way. However no improvement effect seems to have taken place in favor of the local artisanal fishery.

Fishers' ecological knowledge of smalleye hammerhead, Sphyrna tudes , in a tropical estuary Neotropical Ichthyology
Giglio,Vinicius J.; Bornatowski,Hugo.
ABSTRACT Coastal hammerheads have suffered from overexploitation and environmental degradation. We interviewed 79 artisanal fishers to verify fishery aspects, temporal changes in catches and biological aspects of the smalleye hammerhead, Sphyrna tudes , in a marine protected area on Abrolhos Bank, Brazil. Data were compared between three generations of fishers: young, middle-aged and old. Fishers' age varied between 17 and 88 years. We verified significant reductions in the weight of individuals caught by younger fishers. The main types of fishing gear used to catch S. tudes were gill nets and longlines. Overfishing through gill nets and trawl fisheries were mentioned as the cause of S. tudes population collapse in the region. The shark's diet as reported...

Caracteristicas de la pesca artesanal en el Partido de la Costa (Cabo San Antonio) y perfil socioeconomico de la actividad. OceanDocs
Lagos, A.N..
There is a lack of scientific information about the artisanal fishery in the de la Costa County (Buenos Aires province, Argentina). Moreover, this artisanal sector does not have fishing statistics because local fishermen are not obliged to hand in fishing reports, where even basic data on catch and fleet effort should be included. The main objective was the analysis of the artisanal fishery in the de la Costa County from the biological, economic and social point of view. One 132 sample stations were analyzed between 56 degree -57 degree W and 36 degree -37 degree S from 1992 to 1999. Moreover, information on the artisanal fleet, environmental conditions and the arrival of tourists to the de la Costa County was also analyzed. Fishing yield (FY) per boat was...
