Influence of the aspect ratio on the behaviour of an undulating membrane tidal energy converter ArchiMer
Moreau, Martin; Trasch, Martin; Delacroix, Sylvain; Germain, Gregory.
An experimental study of a 1/20th scale undulating membrane tidal energy converter (UMTEC) based on EEL Energy’s device is presented to assess the impact of the membrane's aspect ratio on its behaviour. The aim of this work is to study 3D effects on the machine to optimise the energy extraction. Five aspect ratios from 0.26 to 0.57 are tested at constant length, keeping other geometric parameters constant too. The mechanical energy of the membrane is conveyed above the free surface by a vertical cogwheel/chain assembly to be converted by an electric generator. After describing the experimental set-up, results are presented according to the reduced flow speed. Undulation dynamics and power conversion are analysed. This study highlights the effects of an...

Morphological and physiological changes during maturation of okra seeds evaluated through image analysis Scientia Agricola
Santos,Rayssa Fernanda dos; Gomes-Junior,Francisco Guilhien; Marcos-Filho,Julio.
ABSTRACT: This study was performed to associate specific morphological parameters, defined by X-ray images, with seed performance of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) during maturation. Fruits of cultivar Santa Cruz 47 at different developmental stages were collected at five-day intervals (from 5 to 65 days after anthesis) and water content, dry matter, germination and vigor were determined in seeds extracted immediately after each harvest or after temporary storage for seven days. X-ray tests were also performed after each harvest and the images were analyzed by ImageJ® software to produce data of aspect ratio (relation between major and minor axes of the ellipse surrounding the seed perimeter) and percentage of free space area in the inner seed...

Effect of moisture content variation on some physical properties of Achi seeds CIGR Journal
Oji, Irouwa; Asoegwuand, S.N.; Okereke, C.D..
The physical properties of Achi seeds were determined as a function of moisture content in the range of 12.5% to 24% dry basis (average range of Achi seed between eating and harvesting) to provide information for the design of processing, handling, harvesting and storage equipment and facilities. The average equivalent diameter was found to increase from 12.31 mm at 12.5% d.b moisture content to 12.62 mm at 24% d.b moisture content; geometric mean diameter of 9.99 mm at 12.5% moisture content to 10.37 mm at 24% moisture content. At that range of moisture content investigated, the sphericity increased from 47.80% to 48.82%; the aspect ratio from 0.761 to 0.765; the volume from 977.4 mm3 to 1053.89 mm3; surface area from 313.6 mm2 to 337.66 mm2; square mean...

Body mass and wing geometric morphology of the codling moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) according to sex, location and host plant in the region of Maule, Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Torres,Fabiola; Rodríguez,Marcela A; Lavandero,Blas; Fuentes-Contreras,Eduardo.
Codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is the key pest of apple and walnut production worldwide. Among other variables, successful management of this pest is dependent on adult dispersal at the local scale. Body mass and wing geometric morphology were evaluated on female and male codling moth adults collected from apple and walnut trees in three localities of the Region of Maule. Codling moth adults were obtained by rearing diapausing larvae collected from the field. Newly emerged adults were killed, and the total dry weight, thorax weight and abdomen weight were calculated. The wings were cleared and mounted for morphometric analyses: 15 and 11 characteristics of the fore and hind wings, respectively, were measured, including the...
