Use of wild yeasts as a biocontrol agent against toxigenic fungi and OTA production Agronomy
Souza, Mariana Lino; Passamani, Fabiana Reinis Franca; Ávila, Carla Luiza da Silva; Batista, Luis Roberto; Schwan, Rosane Freitas; Silva, Cristina Ferreira.
This study evaluated the antagonistic potential of 32 wild yeast isolates from coffee and cocoa bean fermentation. These yeasts were inoculated in co-cultivation with Aspergillus carbonarius (CCDCA 10608 and CCDCA 10408) and Aspergillus ochraceus (CCDCA 10612) isolated from grapes and coffee beans. The mycelial growth and ochratoxin A (OTA) production were evaluated, and the spores were counted after cultivation at 28°C for seven days. The yeasts presented higher inhibitory effects (53% in relation to the control) over the mycelial growth of the isolated A. ochraceus (CCDCA10612). Pichia anomala CCMA0148 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae CCMA0159 provided the greatest inhibition of the growth of all fungal strains. All Pichia species presented the highest...

Aquino,Valério Rodrigues; Verçosa,Emanuelle Bergonsi; Falhauber,Gustavo; Lunardi,Luciano Werle; Silla,Lucia; Pasqualotto,Alessandro Comarú.
Very limited data are available in the literature to elucidate the aetiology of invasive mould infections in Latin America. Here we report that Aspergillus species caused only half of such cases in a cohort study conducted over 21 months in a university hospital in Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil. Fusarium spp. were the second most prevalent moulds (20.7%), followed by Zygomycetes (13.8%). The importance of obtaining local epidemiological data for adequately guiding empirical antifungal therapy is reinforced.

Isolation, morphological and molecular characterization of phytate-hydrolysing fungi by 18S rDNA sequence analysis BJM
Gontia-Mishra,Iti; Deshmukh,Dhanshree; Tripathi,Niraj; Bardiya-Bhurat,Khushboo; Tantwai,Keerti; Tiwari,Sharad.
Phytate is the primary storage form of phosphate in plants. Monogastric animals like poultry, pigs and fishes have very low or no phytase activities in their digestive tracts therefore, are incapable to efficiently utilize phytate phosphorus from the feed. Phytase from microbial sources are supplemented to feedstuff of these to increase the uptake of phytate phosphorus. In the present work efforts were made to isolate and characterize proficient phytase producing fungi from soil. Phytase producing fungi were isolated using phytate specific medium. Fungal isolates were selected according to their higher phytase activities. These isolates were further characterized and identified by morphological and microscopic analysis and confirmed by amplification of 18S...

The use of alpha-methyl-D-glucoside, a synthetic analogue of maltose, as inducer of amylase by Aspergillus sp in solid-state and submerged fermentations BJM
Moreira,Fabiana G.; Lenartovicz,Veridiana; Souza,Cristina G.M. de; Ramos,Edivan P.; Peralta,Rosane M..
The use of a methyl-D-glucoside (alphaMG), a synthetic analogue of maltose, as carbon source and inducer of amylase synthesis to several species of Aspergillus was studied in submerged and solid-state fermentations. Among a group of ten species, A. tamarii, A. fumigatus and A. flavus were able to produce biomass and high specific amylolytic activity in submerged cultures containing alphaMG as the only carbon source. In solid state fermentation, the enrichment of basal wheat bran or corn cob medium with alphaMG increased up to 3 times the production of amylases. In both submerged and solid state fermentations, alphaMG was more effective inducer of amylases than maltose and starch.
