Going towards Organic 3.0 Organic Eprints
Rahmann, G..
Organic 3.0 discussions have released a discussion about the future development of the Organic sector (Rahmann et al. 2016). There are many think tanks started ideas (Arbenz et al. 2017). Most of the ideas are very rough and not with practical visions for research. But there should be no time lost, that Organic takes the leadership for innovations, that helps to tackle with the future challenges, to design clear pathways to be more sustainable: food supply and to have ownership for the definition of ecology, health, care, fair and quality.

Changes in Organic Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) in Northern Vietnam Organic Eprints
Tu Tuyet, Nhung; Whitney, Cory W..
Organic Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) may be on important contribution to Organic 3.0. The way that PGS systems are managed can be a major determinant of their success. In Northern Vietnam differing management of PGS systems can determine their level of social and ecological success, as well as the impressions of farmers and retailers. Nevertheless, more farmers’ groups are turning to individual management and this may have negative consequences for the future of PGS in the region.

Increased utilisation of renewable resources: Dilemmas for organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Adler, Steffen A..
Minimising outputs of waste and pollution by recycling and efficient utilisation of renewable Resources is of common interest for organic agriculture and the concepts of circular and bioeconomy. However, in practice, many efforts to increase recycling of various biological materials in organic agriculture are hampered because standards for certified organic production and processing tend to prefer natural products while avoiding processing and especially chemical processes. This creates several dilemmas and weakens the position of organic agriculture as a spear head in the development of better resource utilisation which will reduce environmental impacts from food production. Based on practical examples derived from projects aimed at better utilisation...

The Universal Precautionary Principle: New Pillars and Pathways for Environmental, Sociocultural, and Economic Resilience Organic Eprints
Akins, Ashli; Lyver, Phil O'B.; Alrøe, Hugo F.; Moller, Henrik.
Global environmental degradation is linked to a worldwide erosion of ethnic identity and cultural diversity, as well as market disruption. Cultures rely heavily on the local environment around them, and local communities play a key role in conserving natural resources. People’s identity, connection with land, and the adaptation of Indigenous and local knowledge are prerequisites for resilience. Though the Environmental Precautionary Principle (EPP) aims to tackle environmental degradation by privileging the environment in the face of uncertainty, it is not sufficient on its own; it does not take into account the intimate connection between nature and local culture, nor does it prioritize community or cultural wellbeing. We suggest expanding this...

Pommeresche, Reidun; McKinnon, Kirsty; Sørheim, Kristin; Hansen, Sissel.

TASK 6: Resilience of the value chain and the business/initiative – dealing with change and crises Organic Eprints
Milestad, Rebecka; von Oelreich, Jacob.
Learning, diversity, trust and social networks are key aspects of adaptive capacity and thus for building resilience (Walker et al., 2004; Milestad et al., 2010). The organic value chains explored in HG were able to overcome challenges and grow into mid-scale initiatives because they had adaptive capacity. Thus, they were willing to learn and took the opportunities to learn in order to adjust activities. They used diversity as a strategy to spread risks and to keep options open. Trusting relationships and long-term partnerships with market partners and other actors was strived for and accomplished with extensive social networks. Coupled with professionalization of business and value management, as well as using available market partners to their advantage,...

Guideline for handling pesticide residues in Czech organic production Organic Eprints
Speiser, Bernhard; Bickel, Regula; Huber, Beate; Urban, Jiri.
This document was prepared in the project «Development of guidelines for the use of pesticide analysis in organic inspection in the Czech Republic (sampling, evaluation and interpretation)». At the beginning of this project, a workshop with stakeholders was held. The present document builds on the outcomes of this workshop, and elaborates guidance for all stakeholders involved in Czech organic production and its control, on how to deal with residue analyses. In recognition of the European dimension of the problem, the project followed a two-step approach. In the first step, the present guideline was prepared. It is written in a general style and in the English language, so that it potentially applies for many countries. Although the current project aims...

Mit autonomen Landmaschinen zu neuen Pflanzenbausystemen Organic Eprints
Gaus, Cord-Christian; Minßen, Till-Fabian; Urso, Lisa-Marie; de Witte, Thomas; Wegener, Jens.

Using Green Biorefinery Technology to Enhance Domestic Self-Sufficiency in Protein Feed Supply – Economic Impacts on Conventional and Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Jensen, Jørgen Dejgaard; Gylling, M..
This paper examines the sector economic consequences of protein extraction for non-ruminant feeding from grass, using green biorefinery conversion technology to increase domestic self-supply of protein. Impacts for conventional and organic farming are analysed in a partial equilibrium model of the Danish farm sector, which enables assessment of distributional effects between different farm types. The analysis suggests that crop production value and feed costs will increase, leading to a net economic loss in the conventional sector and a small gain for organic farming. Some variation across farm types in terms of adoption of biomass production and economic outcomes were found.

Economic Effects of Organic Production in Finland Organic Eprints
Viitaharju, Leena; Kujala, Susanna; Törmä, Hannu.
Money is usually one of the strongest reasons influencing decision making when choosing between organic and conventional production or usage, both in case of producers and decision makers of municipalities. The results of the survey directed to organic producers in Finland implied that the contribution to profitability of organic farming would be the most effective way to get more farmers to make the decision to convert from conventional to organic production. Naturally there are also many other reasons that affect the decision to make the conversion, for example environmental and health issues. According to the survey targeted to municipalities’ decision makers, municipalities would use more organic products if they had more financial resources in use....
