Visualization of avian influenza virus infected cells using self-assembling fragments of green fluorescent protein Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Kanehira,Katsushi; Uchida,Yuko; Saito,Takehiko.
Background: Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) are influenza A viruses which are isolated from domestic and wild birds. AIVs that include highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) are a major concern to the poultry industry because they cause outbreaks in poultry with extraordinarily high lethality. In addition, AIVs threaten human health by occasional zoonotic infection of humans from birds. Tools to visualize AIV-infected cells would facilitate the development of diagnostic tests and preventative methods to reduce the spread of AIVs. In this study, a self-assembling split-green fluorescent protein (split-GFP) system, combined with influenza virus reverse genetics was used to construct a visualization method for influenza virus-infected cells....

Lung Cytokine Gene Expression is Correlated with Increased Severity of Disease in a Novel H4N8 Influenza Virus Isolated from Shorebirds. OAK
ARAI, Yasuha; N. BUI, Vuong; TAKEDA, Yohei; Q. TRINH, Dai; NIBUNO, Sayo; RUNSTADLER, Jonathan; OGAWA, Haruko; IMAI, Kunitoshi; 小川, 晴子.
The lung cytokine gene expression profiles of mice infected with 2 strains of H4N8 viruses isolated from shorebirds and reference H4 viruses from ducks are compared. Major differences between the two H4N8 strains of shorebirds, one of which causes a severe respiratory disease in mice, are in the PB1 and NS1 genes. In mice with H4N8 virus induced pneumonia, overall expression of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-12 genes was markedly higher than in mice infected with other H4 viruses tested, although gene expression of type I interferon was not increased until day 4 post viral infection. In contrast, in mice infected with a comparison H4N8 strain, gene expression of type I interferon peaked on day 1 post viral infection. Overall, the cytokine response corresponds with the...

Presence of antibodies against H5, H7 and H9 influenza A virus in wild birds in the State of São Paulo, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Sousa,E de; Costa,T P; Werther,K; Durigon,EL; Araujo,J de; Ferreira,CS; Pinto,AA.
Although the natural reservoirs of the avian influenza (AI) virus have been extensively studied in many countries, there is a clear lack of information on this subject in South America, particularly in Brazil. The objective of this study was to conduct a serological survey for H5, H7 and H9 antibodies to AI-subtype viruses in wild birds in the state of São Paulo , Brazil. Serum samples were tested using the hemagglutination-inhibition assay. Out of the 31 wild birds sampled between January and December of 2006, seven (22.58%), were seropositive for H5, H7 and H9; four (12.90%) were seropositive for H5 and H7; 13 (41.94%), were seropositive only for H7; three (9.7%), were seropositive only for H9; and four (12.90%) were negative for all three hemagglutinin...

H9N2 avian influenza virus antibody titers in human population in fars province, Iran Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Hadipour,MM.
Among the avian influenza A virus subtypes, H5N1 and H9N2 viruses have the potential to cause an influenza pandemic because they are widely prevalent in avian species in Asia and have demonstrated the ability to infect humans. This study was carried out to determined the seroprevalence of H9N2 avian influenza virus in different human populations in Fars province, which is situated in the south of Iran. Antibodies against H9N2 avian influenza virus were measured using hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test in sera from 300 individuals in five different population in Fars province, including poultry-farm workers, slaughter-house workers, veterinarians, patients with clinical signs of respiratory disease, and clinically normal individuals, who were not or...

Diverse uses of feathers with emphasis on diagnosis of avian viral infections and vaccine virus monitoring Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Davidson,I.
The large amounts of feathers produced by the poultry industry, that is considered as a waste was explored for possible uses in various industries, such as meals for animals, biofuels, biodegradable plastic materials, combating water pollution and more. That review mentions these uses, but concentrate on the utilization of feathers for the diagnosis of viral infections and for monitoring vaccine viruses in chickens after vaccination. The viral diseases in which diagnosis using nucleic acids extracted from the feather shafts was described are, Marek's disease virus, circoviruses, chicken anemia virus, fowlpox virus, avian retroviruses, avian influenza virus and infectious laryngotracheitis virus. In two cases, of Marek's disease virus and of infectious...

Vaz,Frederico Fontanelli; Serafini,Patrícia Pereira; Locatelli-Dittrich,Rosangela; Meurer,Rafael; Durigon,Edison Luiz; Araújo,Jansen de; Thomazelli,Luciano Matsumiya; Ometto,Tatiana; Sipinski,Elenise Angelotti Bastos; Sezerban,Rafael Meirelles; Abbud,Maria Cecília; Raso,Tânia Freitas.
ABSTRACT The red-tailed Amazon parrot (Amazona brasiliensis) is a threatened species of psittacine bird that inhabit coastal regions of Brazil. In view of the threat of this species, the aim of this study was to perform a health evaluation in wild nestlings in Rasa Island, determining the prevalence of enterobacteria and infectious agents according to type of nest. Blood samples were collected from 64 birds and evaluated for antibodies of Chlamydia psittaci by commercial dot-blot ELISA. Cloacal and oropharyngeal swabs samples were collected from 23 birds from artificial wooden nests, 15 birds from PVC nests and 2 birds from natural nests for microbiological analysis. Swab samples were collected from 58 parrots for C. psittaci detection by PCR and from 50...
