From intracratonic extension to mature spreading in back arc basins: Examples from the Okinawa, Lau, North Fiji basins ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Boespflug, Xavier; Bougault, Henri; Dosso, Laure; Foucher, Jean-paul; Joron, Jean-louis; Ruellan, Etienne; Sibuet, Jean-claude.
Three cruises (POP 1, SEAPSO 3 and SEAPSO 4) carried out during the "Tour du Monde" of the R.V. Jean Charcot allow us to obtain new structural and geochemical data for the Okinawa, North Fiji and Lau basins. Taken together, the structural and geochemical data illustrate a difference in evolution stages of these sites. The less evolved stage is represented by the Okinawa basin, where accretion is evidenced only by volcanic intrusion into a thinned continental crust. The most evolved stage is illustrated in the North Fiji basin, where the present-day accretion can be directly compm·ed to the East Pacific Ridge. The Lau basin displays an intem1ediate stage with a complex system of accretionary ridges. This difference in the evolution stage is translated in...

A new species of sea anemone (Cnidaria : Anthozoa : Actiniaria) from Manus Basin hydrothermal vents, South-western Pacific ArchiMer
Lopez Gonzalez, P; Rodriguez, E; Segonzac, Michel.
During the BIOACCESS Japanese cruises (1996 and 1998), active hydrothermalism and associated vent fauna were studied on the South-eastern Rift of Manus Basin (South-western Pacific). In the PACMANUS vent field, a conspicuous vent fauna was sampled, including an actinostolid sea anemone (Actiniaria) belonging to an undescribed genus and species. Pacmanactis hashimotoi gen. et spec. nov. is here described, and represents the 9th sea anemone reported from hydrothermal vents.

Helium isotopic composition of hydrothermal fluids from the Manus back-arc Basin, Papua New Guinea ArchiMer
Fourre, E; Jean Baptiste, P; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre; Ishibashi, J.
We present isotopic analysis of helium in hydrothermal fluids from the Manus back-arc basin, collected during the French-Japanese Manusflux and Manaute cruises in 1995 and 2000, respectively. The helium isotope composition of the fluids is comparable to that measured elsewhere in similar subduction environments, with He-3/He-4 values (7.4 to 7.9 R-a) slightly lower than typical MORB values, except on the Manus Spreading Center (MSC) where higher values (12 +/- 0.1 R-a) are observed. The causal link between the narrow spatial extent of the He-3/He-4 anomaly at the MSC and a He-3-rich deep mantle component remains elusive, based on available geophysical data. Thus, the Manus Spreading Center results may be an interesting example of small scale upper-mantle...
