Description of Odontozona addaia spec. nov. (Crustacea: Decapoda: Stenopodidae) from a marine cave in the island of Minorca, western Mediterranean Naturalis

Odontozona addaia, a new species of stenopodid shrimp is described from a marine cave in the island of Minorca (Balearic Islands), being the first record of the genus for the western Mediterranean. One male and one ovigerous female were found during a systematic propspection of several Balearic caves during 1988. Sexual dimorphism is observed and described; the differences mainly concern a more developed third pereiopod in the male, and a distinct shape and armature of the pleonites and pleopods in both sexes. The distinction of this new taxon from the other known closely related species, O. minoica, is discussed.

Phylogeny and biogeography of midwife toads (Alytes, Discoglossidae): a reappraisal Naturalis

The allozyme data base of Arntzen & García-París (1995) on midwife toads (Alytes, Discoglossidae) is reanalysed considering each locus as a discrete character. The phylogeny thus inferred differs from the one obtained with genetic distances in the position of A. dickhilleni from the Betic region – it appears that its sister species is the widespread A. obstetricans, not the Mallorcan endemic A. muletensis. This phylogenetic hypothesis agrees with the taxonomic treatment of the genus based on morphology. A testable biogeographic hypothesis is proposed to account for the diversification of midwife toads in Iberia and the Balearics. Presence of troglobitized Janiridae (Isopoda: Asellota: Janiroidea) in anchihaline caves of the Balearic Islands (Mediterranean); description of Trogloianiropsis lloberai n. gen., n. sp Naturalis

Trogloianiropsis lloberai n. gen., n. sp. is described from the flooded coastal karst of the Balearic Islands. It superficially resembles Ianiropsis Sars, 1897 and Janaira Moreira & Pires, 1977, but differs from both in some remarkable characters. It seems to be restricted to the deeper layers of anchihaline cave lakes, and shows a troglobitized morphology (i.e.: absence of eyes and body pigmentation, and extraordinary elongation of antennae). Since its phyletic affinities are not clear, its biogeographic significance and possible derivation from deep-sea or shallow-water ancestors cannot be established.

Burrimysis palmeri, a new genus and species of Heteromysini (Crustacea: Mysidacea) from an anchihaline cave lake of Cabrera (Balearic Islands, Mediterranean) Naturalis

Burrimysis palmeri, a new genus and species of Heteromysini, is described from the deep layers of an anchihaline cave lake on Cabrera (Balearic Islands). It shares with Mysidetes Holt & Tattersall and Deltamysis Bowman & Orsi a third thoracic limb endopodite without enlarged segments, and rudimentary pleopods in adults of both sexes. Nevertheless, Burrimysis differs, among other characters, in the armature and profile of telson and uropods. Its affinities and biogeographic significance remain uncertain.
