Screening of plant growth promoting bacteria associated with barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivated in South Brazil Biota Neotropica
Pontes,Andress P.; Souza,Rocheli de; Granada,Camille E.; Passaglia,Luciane M.P..
The occurrence of associations between bacteria and plant roots may be beneficial, neutral or detrimental. Plant growth promoting (PGP) bacteria form a heterogeneous group of beneficial microorganisms that can be found in the rhizosphere, the root surfaces or in association with host plant. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize PGP bacteria associated to barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L.) aiming a future application as agricultural inoculant. One hundred and sixty bacterial strains were isolated from roots or rhizospheric soil of barley based on their growth in nitrogen-free selective media. They were evaluated for their ability to produce indolic compounds (ICs) and siderophores, and to solubilize tricalcium phosphate inin vitro assays....

Azospirillum sp . inoculation in wheat, barley and oats seeds greenhouse experiments BABT
Dalla Santa,Osmar R.; Hernández,Ramona Fernández; Alvarez,Gergina L. Michelena; Ronzelli Junior,Pedro; Soccol,Carlos Ricardo.
The aim of the present work was to evaluate the inoculation effects of Azospirillum sp. RAM-7 strain, in seeds of wheat, barley and oats cultures on yield and total nitrogen content of the grains in greenhouse experiments. Seeds inoculation with Azospirillum sp. RAM-7 strain enhanced grain yields, even so, the responses vary among the evaluated cultures. For wheat, significant increases were obtained when the inoculation was associated to 100% of the recommended nitrogen, although the treatment that received only inoculation produced 7.4% above the control, however this difference wasn't significant. For barley, the presence of the inoculant substituted 20% the recommended nitrogen fertilization. For oats the inoculation with Azospirillum sp. RAM-7 didn't...

Effect of deoxynivalenol and T-2 toxin in malt amylase activity BABT
Garda-Buffon,Jaqueline; Baraj,Edlira; Badiale-Furlong,Eliana.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of DON and T-2 toxin levels on the malt amylase activity. The malt was contaminated in accordance with central composite design experiment with DON and T-2 toxin levels until 1000 ng/g. The activities of the enzymes were evaluated by Bernfeld method. The increase in T-2 toxin concentration inhibited the α-amylase activity. However, the increase of both toxins concentration caused inverse effect. The interaction between toxins indicated synergetic effect on the β-amylase activity. An increased activity occurred when the toxins contamination levels in malt were higher (1000ng/g malt). The trichothecenes interfered with the performance of aminolitic enzymes in the stage of malting, resulting in a...

Assessing long- and short-term trends in cereal yields: the case of Chile between 1929 and 2009 Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Engler,Alejandra; del Pozo,Alejandro.
Cereal grain yields have increased worldwide during the 20th century as a consequence of plant breeding, improved cultural practices and intensive use of inputs. However, there is evidence that there are differences in yield pattern evolution across countries and cereals. The purpose of this study was to compare trends in the yields of the most commonly produced cereals in Chile, namely wheat, oat, barley, maize and rice, to identify similarities in trends across crops and to estimate long-term growth rates in the yields and their changes over time. Data for wheat, barley, oat, rice and maize yields between 1929 and 2009 were obtained from the Chilean Oficina de Estudios y Políticas Agrarias (ODEPA). A first-order autoregressive (AR1) model with trend was...

Barley Types and Varieties in Spain: Un panorama histórico Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Martínez-Moreno,Fernando; Igartua,Ernesto; Solís,Ignacio.
Barley is currently the most cultivated crop in Spain, with an acreage of about three million ha. Its importance stems from its adaptation to areas with poor soil conditions and water stress. The aim of this work is to describe the historical evolution of barley types and varieties of barley grown by farmers in Spain. A historical review was performed by consulting articles and books on the history, archaeology, and agronomy related to the issue. Different web sites and articles about the current varietal state of barley in Spain were also consulted. Another important information source was the CRF (Centro de Recursos Fitogenéticos, Spanish Center of Plant Genetic Resources) of Spain, where a large collection of landraces is preserved. The first barleys...

Kinetic, thermodynamic properties, and optimization of barley hydration Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Montanuci,Flávia Daiana; Jorge,Luiz Mario de Matos; Jorge,Regina Maria Matos.
The hydration kinetics of five barley cultivars was studied at six different temperatures ranging from 10 to 35 ºC for 32 hours applying the Peleg model. Response Surface was used to describe dynamic of the process and identify the hydration time for each cultivar. The activation energy (Ea), enthalpy (ΔH*), entropy (ΔS*), and Gibbs free energy (ΔG*) were estimated from the adjusted parameters and Arrhenius equation. Temperature had significant effect on the hydration of the five cultivars. At low temperatures, the stabilization time for hydration was faster. Peleg constants K1 and K2 decreased with increasing temperature. The cultivar BRS BRAU showed the lowest value of initial absorption rate (R0 = 0.149 kg.h-1) at 10 ºC, while the cultivar BRS BOREMA...

Plant senescence and proteolysis: two processes with one destiny Genet. Mol. Biol.
Diaz-Mendoza,Mercedes; Velasco-Arroyo,Blanca; Santamaria,M. Estrella; González-Melendi,Pablo; Martinez,Manuel; Diaz,Isabel.
Abstract Senescence-associated proteolysis in plants is a complex and controlled process, essential for mobilization of nutrients from old or stressed tissues, mainly leaves, to growing or sink organs. Protein breakdown in senescing leaves involves many plastidial and nuclear proteases, regulators, different subcellular locations and dynamic protein traffic to ensure the complete transformation of proteins of high molecular weight into transportable and useful hydrolysed products. Protease activities are strictly regulated by specific inhibitors and through the activation of zymogens to develop their proteolytic activity at the right place and at the proper time. All these events associated with senescence have deep effects on the relocation of nutrients...

Epistasis interaction of QTL effects as a genetic parameter influencing estimation of the genetic additive effect Genet. Mol. Biol.
Bocianowski,Jan.
Epistasis, an additive-by-additive interaction between quantitative trait loci, has been defined as a deviation from the sum of independent effects of individual genes. Epistasis between QTLs assayed in populations segregating for an entire genome has been found at a frequency close to that expected by chance alone. Recently, epistatic effects have been considered by many researchers as important for complex traits. In order to understand the genetic control of complex traits, it is necessary to clarify additive-by-additive interactions among genes. Herein we compare estimates of a parameter connected with the additive gene action calculated on the basis of two models: a model excluding epistasis and a model with additive-by-additive interaction effects....

Genetic diversity and geographical differentiation of cultivated six-rowed naked barley landraces from the Qinghai-Tibet plateau of China detected by SSR analysis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Feng,Zong-Yun; Zhang,Li-Li; Zhang,Yi-Zheng; Ling,Hong-Qing.
Cultivated six-rowed naked barley (Hordeum vulgare ssp. hexastichon var. nudum Hsü) is the oldest cultivated barley in China. We used 35 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers selected from seven barley linkage groups to study the genetic diversity, geographical differentiation and evolutionary relationships among 65 H. vulgare ssp. hexastichon landrace accessions collected from the Qinghai-Tibet plateau of China, 25 accessions from Tibet (TB), 20 from Qinghai (QH) and 20 from Ganzi (GZ) prefecture in Sichuan province. At the 35 SSR loci we identified 248 alleles among the 65 accessions, 119 (47.98%) of the alleles being common alleles. We also found that the TB accessions possessed 47 private alleles, about 1.5 times more than the 31 private alleles found...

Structural and regulatory differences in amylase isoenzymes in germinating Brazilian barley cultivars Genet. Mol. Biol.
Georg-Kraemer,J.E.; Cavalli,S.S..
The amylase electrophoretic patterns of 10 Brazilian brewing-barley varieties with different malting grades and diastatic power were analyzed during the 7-day germination which occurs during the malting process. Intra and inter-variety genetic variability was observed at both the structural and regulatory level. In the first few days after germination all varieties showed a few active loci, all of them with low activity. In subsequent days, new loci became active and those already detected since early germination showed increased activity. All varieties showed a continuous increase in amylase synthesis until the 3rd and/or 4th day after germination. Some varieties maintained high amylase activity until the last day of germination, while others showed a...

Inheritance and identification of molecular markers associated with spot blotch (Cochliobolus sativus L.) resistance through microsatellites analysis in barley Genet. Mol. Biol.
Kuldeep,Tyagi; Nandan,Rajiv; Kumar,Uttam; Prasad,Lal Chand; Chand,Ramesh; Joshi,Arun Kumar.
Spot blotch resistant (IBON 18) and susceptible (RD 2508) lines were crossed to investigate inheritance of resistance and to identify simple sequence repeats (SSRs) associated with resistance. F1 resistance was intermediate and suggested additive nature of inheritance. Three additive genes was noted in the distribution of F3, F4 and F5 generations. In F6 and F6-7, the quantitative and qualitative approaches also suggested the control of three resistance genes. The parents and the RILs (F6/F6-7) were grown in four environments and spot blotch severity recorded. Forty five SSR primers, specific for chromosomes 1 (7H) and 5 (1H), were applied. Of these, 12 were polymorphic between the parents, and between the resistant and susceptible bulks. Three markers BMS...

Morphological characterization and genetic analysis of Drechslera teres isolates Genet. Mol. Biol.
Frazzon,A.P.G.; Matsumura,A.T.S.; Van Der Sand,S.T..
Net blotch, caused by the phytopathogen Drechslera teres, is a common disease of barley (Hordeum vulgare L) and is responsible for large economic losses in some barley growing areas. In this study the morphology and genetic variability of eight D. teres isolates from different regions of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul were investigated. Colony morphology was studied on potato-dextrose-agar (PDA) and genetic variability investigated using the random amplified polymorphic-DNA (RAPD) technique. 27 commercially available primers were tested of which 16 were selected for use in polymorphic analysis due to their good resolution and reproducibility. Similarity coefficients were used to construct dendrograms based on colony morphology and RAPD data...

Método do tanque Classe A para irrigação da cevada, cultivar BRS 195, no cerrado. Infoteca-e
GUERRA, A. F.; ROCHA, O. C..
ABSTRACT: Efficient use of water resources is the key to guarantee water suply for future human consumption and irrigation. in the irrigated areas of the Cerrado region pressurized irrigation systems allow high efficiency in water conduction. However, lack of knowledge in crop water requirement determine inadequated crop water management. Negative effect on crop due to excessive watering or irrigation in deficit are commonly seen in the irrigated agriculture. Using adequated crop coefficients determined in the Cerrado Biome, pan evaporation method can be used to help farmers in irrigation scheduling. By using a weighting lisimeter installed in a 8 ha area irrigated by center pivot, crop coeficients were determined for BRS 195 barley crop. These values are...
