Sequential use of ammonium and leucine as nitrogen sources during growth of Geotrichum candidum on a glucose based medium Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Adour,Lydia; Bude,Florence; Amrane,Abdeltif.
Geotrichum candidum growth on ammonium and leucine as nitrogen sources and glucose as a carbon source was examined. A clear preference of G. candidum for ammonium over leucine as a nitrogen source was shown. Indeed, ammonium was completely exhausted at the end of exponential growth after less than 35 hrs of culture; in contrast only 5% of leucine was concomitantly assimilated. Growth continued at slower rates on glucose and leucine as carbon and nitrogen sources respectively, and at the end of culture (185 hrs), leucine was completely exhausted.

Batch culture growth of Chlorella zofingiensis on effluent derived from two-stage anaerobic digestion of two-phase olive mill solid waste Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Travieso Córdoba,Lissette; Domínguez Bocanegra,Alma Rosa; Rincón Llorente,Bárbara; Sánchez Hernández,Enrique; Benítez Echegoyen,Francisco; Borja,Rafael; Raposo Bejines,Francisco; Colmenarejo Morcillo,Manuel Francisco.
This paper presents the use of an effluent derived from two-stage anaerobic digestion of two-phase olive mill solid waste (OMSW) as a substrate for the production of Chlorella zofingiensis in batch mode. Chlorella zofingiensis when grown autotrophycally can accumulate significant quantities of valuable carotenoids which are used as an additive in fish and poultry farming, as colorants in foods and in health care products. It was found that two-phase OMSW previously treated by two-stage anaerobic digestion and further sterilized may be used as a culture medium for the microalgae Chlorella zofingiensis. Typical growth curves were obtained using both the above-mentioned anaerobic effluent and a synthetic medium. Total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) and soluble...

GROWTH AND TOTAL CAROTENOID CONTENT IN FOUR CHILEAN STRAINS OF HAEMATOCOCCUS PLUVIALIS FLOTOW, UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS Gayana Botánica
González,Mariela A; Cifuentes,Ana Silvia; Gómez,Patricia I.
Haematococcus pluvialis is a unicellular green microalga cultivated on a large scale as a natural source of astaxanthin, a ketocarotenoid of high commercial value due to its colorant and antioxidant properties. The aim of this study was to compare growth and total carotenoids among four strains of H. pluvialis isolated from different microhabitats in two geographical locations in Chile. Growth was carried out under autotrophic and mixotrophic conditions and under two photon flux densities (PFD) (20 and 85 umol nrV¹). Total carotenoid content was estimated on day 45. Most of the strains grew better under the autotrophic conditions; the highest exponential growth rates were exhibited at the high PFD in all the strains (ranging from 0.73 to 1.20 div day"¹)...

Простейшие модели роста микроводорослей . 4. Экспоненциальная и линейная фазы роста. IBSS Repository
Лелеков, А. С.; Тренкеншу, Р. П..

Competition for phosphorus between two dinoflagellates: A toxic Alexandrium minutum and a non-toxic Heterocapsa triquetra ArchiMer
Labry, Claire; Erard-le Denn, Evelyne; Chapelle, Annie; Fauchot, Juliette; Youenou, Agnes; Crassous, Marie-pierre; Le Grand, Jacqueline; Lorgeoux, Benedicte.
The understanding of the dominance of one species with respect to others is a pertinent challenge in HAB growth dynamics studies and the nutrient supply mode is one of the factors potentially involved. The competition for phosphorus (P) between a toxic species, Alexandrium minutum, and a non-toxic species, Heterocapsa triquetra, was studied (1) along a gradient of P depletion, (2) testing different P depletion degrees before a single PO4 supply and (3) experimenting different PO4 supply frequencies. In conditions Of PO4 depletion, H. triquetra stopped growing after two days both in monospecific and mixed batch cultures whereas A. minutum grew progressively from day 2 until the end of the experiment. This time-lag growth of A. minutum is associated to its...

Effect of the culture system and culture technique on biochemical characteristics of Pavlova lutheri and its nutritional value for Crassostrea gigas larvae ArchiMer
Ponis, Emanuele; Parisi, G; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Robert, Rene; Zittelli, G; Tredici, R.
Pavlova lutheri was cultivated in carboys using batch technique and in a flat alveolar photobioreactor (FAP), using initially batch and then semi-continuous techniques. Growth and productivity of the cultures were compared and their nutritional quality was assessed by analysing their biochemical composition (gross composition, fatty acids and sterols) and by evaluating their food value for Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) larvae as bispecific diet in association with Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum. The highest productivity was achieved with the FAP operating in semi-continuous mode. Gross composition of P. lutheri was similar in all cultures, while cellular organic matter content of the microalga grown in FAP in semi-continuous mode was lower....

High-density production of the rotifer <i>Brachionus plicatilis</i> in a recirculation system: consideration of water quality, zootechnical and nutritional aspects OMA
Suantika, G.; Dhert, Ph.; Nurhudah, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
Rotifers were reared on the artificial diet culture Selco® in batch and recirculation conditions at different water exchange rates. The different rearing conditions resulted in considerable changes in water quality, which in their turn affected rotifer growth and food consumption. At a daily water exchange rate of 100%, no positive effect was obtained in rotifer growth compared to the batch rearing system, but the rotifer culture period could be prolonged by 1 week. By increasing the daily water exchange rate from 100 to 300% the maximum rotifer density could be significantly (<i>P</i> < 0.05) increased from 1800 to 2500 individuals ml-1. At the highest recirculation rate (daily water exchange of 500%) the highest...

Controlled production of <i>Artemia</i> cysts in batch cultures OMA
Versichele, D.; Sorgeloos, P..
The possibility to develop a routine batch culturing method for the production of cysts has been examined at laboratory scale. The influence of abiotic and biotic parameters on the mode of reproduction has been studied and the following facts have been noted: - cyclic low oxygen tensions induce haemoglobin synthesis with subsequent shift of the mode of reproduction from ovoviviparity to oviparity; - addition of ferric-EDTA stimulates haemoglobin synthesis;- a correlation exists between the color of the animals and the type of reproduction; - neither the food source nor the water salinity <i>per se</i> control the mode of reproduction. However, cysts produced at low salinity appear to have a low hatchability. The effect on the hatchability of...
