Analyse des flottilles du sud du golfe de Gascogne, de 1986 à 2002 – De Noirmoutier à Bayonne. Description et évolution des composantes de pêche ArchiMer
Leaute, Jean-pierre.
This document presents a comparative assessment of six triennal analysis carried out between 1986 and 2002, on 1300 boats, on average, from the 35 ports of Southern Bay of Biscay fishing fleets (from Loire river to Spanish border). Fisheries statistics allow the identification of different fishing practices and fishing boats associated with them within the fleets. In order to allow comparison and analysis of the evolution that has taken place during the study period, the same variables (gears used, landed species) and multivariate analysis procedures have been used to produce groupings of vessels. Over the period, 11 components, on average, have been identified, grouped in two entities, mobile and fixed gears. If the discriminative characteristics...

Evidence of a relationship between weight and total length of marine fish in the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean: physiological, spatial and temporal variations ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Bellamy, Elise; Delpech, Jean-paul; Lazard, Coline; Salaun, Michele; Verin, Yves; Coppin, Franck; Travers-trolet, Morgane.
Weight–Body Length relationships (WLR) of 45 fish species (37 Actinopterygii and eight Elasmobranchii) were investigated. A total of 31,167 individuals were caught and their biological parameters measured during the four quarters from 2013 to 2015, on five scientific surveys sampling the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean from the North Sea to the Bay of Biscay (ICES Divisions IVb, IVc, VIId, VIIe, VIIg, VIIh, VIIj, VIIIa and VIIIb). Among 45 tested species, all showed a significant correlation between total length (L) and total weight (W). The influence of sex on WLR was estimated for 39 species and presented a significant sexual dimorphism for 18 species. Condition factor (K) of females was always higher than for males. Moreover, a spatial effect on the WLR...

Déclin de la taille-aux-âges des sardines (Sardina pilchardus) : diminution de la croissance et/ou disparition sélective des individus à croissance rapide ArchiMer
Gentil, Claire.
In many exploited species, we see a decrease of size-at-ages. Two main hypotheses have been proposed to explain this decline: a decline in growth and the selective mortality of the individuals with fast growth both being due to environmental changes or/and to fishing. The sardine Sardina pilchardus of the Bay of Biscay is a good model for the study of this phenomenon because of its high sensitivity to the environmental variations and it sustains two large French and Spanish fisheries. The aim of this study is to measure the changes in the growth of sardines, by the reading of otoliths, and to understand mechanisms involved in this process. The main stages of this study are described in this report: extraction of otoliths during PELGAS, otoliths...

Determining how the pelagic ecosystem over the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic) functions: An approach using mesozooplankton enzyme activities as descriptors ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Delmas, Daniel; Koueta, Noussithe.
A fisheries research cruise conducted in 2000 offered a first opportunity to take simultaneous measurements of the activities of three enzymes in mesozooplankton samples collected at a regional scale over the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay in the NE Atlantic, with the aim of characterizing main aspects of the functioning of the biotic environment of small pelagic fish populations. The activity of the digestive endopeptidase trypsin was selected to characterize the assimilation rate of proteins, whereas pyruvate kinase (PK) was chosen as an indicator of carbohydrate assimilation and aspartate transcarbamylase (ATC) provided an overall assessment of mesozooplankton productivity. The Bay of Biscay region is subject to various strong physical driving...

Distribution, encounter rates, and habitat characteristics of toothed cetaceans in the Bay of Biscay and adjacent waters from platform-of-opportunity data ArchiMer
Kiszka, Jeremy; Macleod, Kelly; Van Canneyt, Olivier; Walker, Dylan; Ridoux, Vincent.
Data on the distribution and habitat utilization of oceanic marine mammals are difficult to collect and yet such information is beneficial for many conservation and management purposes. Data collected during ferry-based cetacean surveys in the English Channel and Bay of Biscay between 1998 and 2002 were analysed to investigate the distribution, encounter rate, and habitat characteristics of toothed cetaceans there. In all, 17 873 nautical miles were surveyed, and 1008 encounters of 13 identified species, including delphinids, ziphiids, harbour porpoise, and sperm whale, were recorded. The common dolphin was the commonest species, followed in decreasing occurrence by striped and bottlenose dolphins, pilot whale, harbour porpoise, Cuvier's beaked whale, and...

A quantitative estimate of the function of soft-bottom sheltered coastal areas as essential flatfish nursery habitat ArchiMer
Trimoreau, E.; Archambault, Benoit; Brind'Amour, Anik; Lepage, Mario; Guitton, Jerome; Le Pape, O..
Essential fish habitat suitability (EFHS) models and geographic information system (GIS) were combined to describe nursery habitats for three flatfish species (Solea solea, Pleuronectes platessa, Dicologlossa cuneata) in the Bay of Biscay (Western Europe), using physical parameters known or suspected to influence juvenile flatfish spatial distribution and density (i.e. bathymetry, sediment, estuarine influence and wave exposure). The effects of habitat features on juvenile distribution were first calculated from EFHS models, used to identify the habitats in which juvenile are concentrated. The EFHS model for S. solea confirmed previous findings regarding its preference for shallow soft bottom areas and provided new insights relating to the significant...

Tidal level influence on the spawning process of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) on a rocky shore (Bay of Biscay). ArchiMer
De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Mahias, Jeremy; Castets, Virginie; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Bru, Noelle; Lissardy, Muriel.
The sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus is an important exploited resource on the Mediterranean coast and has been the subject of much research. In the Bay of Biscay, the situation is different, as some studies have been conducted on the Spanish Basque coast but few on the French part of that coast. However, the Basque coast offers favourable conditions for the development of this species, and its exploitation could be a source of potential diversification for fishermen, especially in the context of difficulties with some other resources. At the request of the managers of this coastal resource, a study was undertaken on sea urchins to improve knowledge of this stock, particularly about its biological characteristics. In this work, assessment consisted of...

Some expected impacts of the Common Fishery Policy on marine food webs ArchiMer
Kopp, Dorothee; Robert, Marianne; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Mehault, Sonia.
For the ecosystem approach to fisheries management, understanding population dynamics and ecosystem resilience in response to the landing obligation acted by the reform of the European Common Fishery Policy (CFP) is currently an important avenue of research. This study attempts to assess the impact of the new CFP on marine food webs. Total carbon and nitrogen loss induced by a discard ban were estimated for the ecosystem of the Bay of Biscay based on French At-Sea Observer data and carbon and nitrogen content of discarded fish. Changes in predator diets were estimated by comparing two Bayesian mixing models, one mimicking the current situation and the second the application of the new CFP (removing the discarded species that would be landed from the...

Analyse des petits pelagiques, sardine et anchois, dans le golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Coiffec, Gaelle; Duhamel, Erwan; Biseau, Alain; Danzart, Marc.
Since 1993 the yearly amounts of sardine landings for the Bay of Biscay fishing ports have experienced a constant increase (10,000 tonnes in 1993); on that account sardine is the first species landed in the fishing ports of the Bay of Biscay (15,000 tonnes in 2003). It is sold 0.54 € / kg (constant price over ten years) which means a 8,100 k€ turnover in 2003 and the 12th rank in value landed in the fishing ports of Bay of Biscay. Though anchovy landings have decreased over the last ten years, especially since 2001, this species occupies the 3rd rank of the highest landings (7,300 tonnes) of the Atlantic shoreline in 2003.The decrease of anchovy landings over the last ten years may account for the high increase of its constant sale price of 1.5 € / kg from...

Temporal trends and spatial structures of the sea surface temperature in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Koutsikopoulos, Constantin; Beillois, Pierre; Leroy, Claude; Taillefer, Françoise.
A time series spatial grid of sea surface temperature (SST) data provided by the archives of Meteo-France and covering the period 1972-1993 was analysed in order to define both the long-term and periodic (mainly seasonal) components at different locations in the Bay of Biscay. The study confirmed the existence of a long-term increasing trend in the SST, but showed that this trend was not homogeneous over the entire area. It revealed also that the amplitude of the cyclic components (summer-winter differences) is spatially heterogeneous. The south-eastern part of the Bay of Biscay, close to the French-Spanish border, shows the stronger warming trend (a mean increase of 1.4 degrees C for the period 1972-1993). This trend decreases in the adjacent regions and...

Spatial and Seasonal Distributions of Frontal Activity over the French Continental Shelf in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Yelekci, Ozge; Charria, Guillaume; Capet, Xavier; Reverdin, Gilles; Sudre, Joel; Yahia, Hussein.
The frontal activity in coastal regions remains a research field where a large number of open questions needs to be addressed to quantify the potential impact of these processes on dependent systems (e.g. biogeochemical activity). Spatial and seasonal distributions of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) fronts (∼1-100 km) in the vicinity of main French rivers, Gironde and Loire, are explored over the continental shelf North of 45 °N in the Bay of Biscay. A high resolution (1 km spatial and daily temporal resolutions) dataset of 11 years' (2003 to 2013) remotely sensed SST by MODIS sensor onboard Aqua and Terra satellites has been investigated and compared with coastal numerical model experiments. The detection and characterization fronts with fluctuating...

Modélisation bioénergétique de la variabilité des traits d’histoire de vie de l’anchois et de la sardine entre le golfe du Lion, le golfe de Gascogne et la Manche ArchiMer
Menu, Clara.
Small pelagic fish show a general decrease in size and body condition over the past two decades in the North-East Atlantic. The underlying factors are still not well understood, however recent studies point to a bottom-up control. In order to understand how the environment impacts the main biological functions, i.e. growth, reproduction and maintenance, we adopted a bioenergetic modelling framework based on the Dynamic Energy Budget theory. To improve the robustness of our study, we chose a comparative approach between two species, Engraulis encrasicolus and Sardina pilchardus, both living in three areas, namely the English Channel, the Bay of Biscay and the Gulf of Lion. Our model is calibrated over the Bay of Biscay and then applied to the other areas,...

Les flottilles de pêche de l'Union Européenne dans le golfe de Gascogne vues du ciel ArchiMer
Leaute, Jean-pierre.
Regular flights over the Bay of Biscay by the French Customs Air Service, have enabled us to record more precisely, from 1989 to 1995, the geographical locations of French and other European Community (EU) fishing boats. Data showed three main 'metiers' within the Bay of Biscay fishing fleet: French and Spanish bottom trawlers (61 %), French gill-netters and Spanish longliners: More than 80 % of gill-netters worked inside the territorial sea (12 nautical miles) and 60 % of them worked south of Noirmoutier (47 degrees N). Longliners moved according to the seasons, from the edge of the continental shelf to the 50-100 m sounding lines. Since they work at night, only few pelagic trawlers have been recorded (records being made in daylight). The potters, liners...

First record of Parapristipoma octolineatum (Haemulidae) on the French Atlantic coast. ArchiMer
De Casamajor, Marie-noelle.
A specimen of African striped grunt Parapristipoma octolineatum was observed on the French part of the Bay of Biscay. This is the first and the most northern record of this species in the Northeastern Atlantic. Moreover, no specimen of this family was ever listed in this geographical area. Repeated observations of the same individual during the four consecutive past years in summer (2013-2016), suggest its adaptation to environmental conditions of this area.

Answering a need of the Office of Regional Marine Affairs of Brittany, the "fisheries" laboratory of the Ifremer in Lorient provides synthesis elements about the status of the stocks of the main species exploited in the Bay of Biscay, Celtic Sea and Western Ireland in 1983. It provides information about the fishing capacity according to the different jobs done and compares two fleets from South-Brittany: Lorient and Concarneau. This report will have to be completed by the laboratories of Roscoff for activities in North-Brittany and of la Rochelle for activities in the Bay of Biscay.

Monitoring small pelagic fish in the Bay of Biscay ecosystem, using indicators from an integrated survey ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu; Petitgas, Pierre; Huret, Martin; Duhamel, Erwan; Romagnan, Jean-baptiste; Authier, Matthieu; Dupuy, Christine; Spitz, Jerome.
This paper is a practical contribution to two important debates raised by the implementation of marine ecosystem based management: (i) which ecosystem data can be provided by a fisheries survey optimised for ecosystem monitoring; and (ii) how to combine/select potential indicators to derive useful information on marine ecosystem status and dynamics? A suite of 143 potential indicators, including spatial indices, representing small pelagic fish and their biotic and abiotic environments are presented. Indicators were routinely derived from the PELGAS integrated ecosystem survey conducted in spring in the Bay of Biscay (BoB). The general patterns over time in this suite of 5–16 years, non-stationary time series are characterised using a methodology based on...

Cold-water coral habitats in submarine canyons of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Van Den Beld, Inge; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; De Chambure, Laurent; Davies, Jaime S; Guillaumont, Brigitte; Olu, Karine; Menot, Lenaick.
The topographical and hydrological complexity of submarine canyons, coupled with high substratum heterogeneity, make them ideal environments for cold-water coral (CWC) habitats. These habitats, including reefs, are thought to provide important functions for many organisms. The canyons incising the continental slope of the Bay of Biscay have distinct morphological differences from the north to the south. CWCs have been reported from this basin in the late 19th century; however, little is known about their present-day distribution, diversity and environmental drivers in the canyons. In this study, the characteristics and distribution of CWC habitats in the submarine canyons of the Bay of Biscay are investigated. Twenty-four canyons and three locations...

Modeling fish growth and reproduction in the context of the Dynamic Energy Budget theory to predict environmental impact on anchovy spawning duration ArchiMer
Pecquerie, Laure; Petitgas, Pierre; Kooijman, Sebastiaan.
Spawning location and timing are critical for understanding fish larval survival. The impact of a changing environment on spawning patterns is, however, poorly understood. A novel approach is to consider the impact of the environment on individual life histories and subsequent spawnings. In the present work, we extend the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory to investigate how environment variability impacts the spawning timing and duration of a multiple-batch spawning species. The model is successfully applied to reproduce the growth and reproduction of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Bay of Biscay. The model captures realistically the start and ending of the spawning season, including the timing of the spawning events, and the change in egg number...

Role of the Nutritional Condition of Breeding Anchovies in the Subsequent Recruitment to their Population in the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic) ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Masse, Jacques.
The recruitment of marine fish populations is a central concern of fisheries scientists. Multiple research pathways have been explored, with emphasis of the causes of mortality affecting principally the early developmental stages of fish life. The small data set presented focuses on a feature often inadequately considered, i.e., the nutritional condition of the breeding parent fishes estimated from the levels of the RNA/DNA ratio determined in fish white muscle. This is applied to the European anchovy population inhabiting the French continental shelf of the North-east Atlantic Ocean. In four of the five years analysed, the annual recruitment shows a tight relationship with the mean values for the RNA/DNA ratio determined in the parent fish during the...

Acoustic detection of the spatial and temporal distribution of fish shoals in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Scalabrin, Carla; Masse, Jacques.
Echo sounder data were used to investigate the spatio-temporal variability of shoal behaviour in the Bay of Biscay. Data collected from annual surveys were processed using MOVIES-B software in order to mcasure this variability. The software was designed to measure morphological, energetic and space-time distribution descriptors from the acoustic signal received from fish shoals. Two surveys, DAAG 90 and DAAG 91, provided the appropriate characteristics for such an analysis. The survey's objective was to obtain relative abundance indices for the anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) biomass in the Bay of Biscay. The surveys were carried out in the same area (southern Bay of Biscay), at the same period (April) within one year interval (1990 and 1991), using the...
