International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS2019-Q1). French cruise report ArchiMer
Lazard, Coline; Verin, Yves; Auber, Arnaud.
IBTS surveys (International Bottom Trawl Survey) are carried out within an international framework. Main countries bordering the North Sea participate to it according to the European Community regulations (EC N°1543/2000 and N° 1639/2001) which specify that countries from E.U. have to carry out surveys at sea in order to evaluate abundance and stocks distribution, independently of commercial fisheries data. The first target of the IBTS survey is to have a diagnosis on the main commercial fish stock and to calculate abundances index by age for these species. This survey started in the years 70’s and gradually standardised. Since the years 80’s, a common protocol is implemented and used by all participants. The same fishing gear and the same working methods...

Rapport de la campagne SOLPER 1 (26 août – 2 septembre 2005) ArchiMer
Leaute, Jean-pierre.
To estimate the size and abundance distribution of juvenile sole (Solea solea) of nurseries in the Pertuis charentais (France) in 2005, a small beam trawl of 2 m wide and 8 mm stretched mesh was used over a hundred sampling points. The other fish catches have also been recorded.

International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS2021-Q1) - French cruise report. ArchiMer
Lazard, Coline; Verin, Yves; Auber, Arnaud.
In 2021, the French NS-IBTS Q1 survey was conducted as part of the International Bottom Trawl Survey program carried out by main countries bordering the North Sea in order to assess abundance and stocks distribution, independently of commercial fisheries data. The first target of the NS-IBTS Q1 survey is to provide a diagnosis on the main commercial fish species by estimating their abundance per age. A standardized protocol is rigorously applied by all participants. The R/V Thalassa sampled the eastern part of the Channel and southern North Sea (until 56° N) from 19th January to 9th February 2021. During daily time, 56 hauls, lasting 30 minutes, have been carried out with a GOV bottom trawl. A total of 82 fish species have been collected, determined and...

Functional gains of including non-commercial epibenthic taxa in coastal beam trawl surveys: A note ArchiMer
Brind'Amour, Anik; Rouyer, Armelle; Martin, Jocelyne.
The development of ecosystem-based indicators requires the broadening of a view of the community, from fish species to all the species (macrobenthic and fish) correctly captured by a given sampling gear. Many scientific surveys already have such integrated databases. The present note aims to demonstrate that existing databases, herein from dedicated coastal nursery surveys, are actually underexploited. Such databases contain information on non-commercial taxa, which could greatly improve our knowledge on the organisation and functioning of coastal ecosystems. Using two datasets, a "complete" dataset composed of commercial and not-commercial epibenthic trawled species (fish and invertebrate) and a "subset" dataset characterized by commercial and routinely...

Campagne Techorhago ArchiMer
Vacherot, Jean-philippe.

Leaute, Jean-pierre; Aubert, Fabien; Lepareur, Fanny; Coupeau, Yann; Boiron-leroy, Anne.
A large number of studies on common sole have already been done for years by many research laboratories. This study sought to make a focus on a major nursery on the Atlantic coast, the Pertuis charentais, through the results of eight annual surveys (2005-2012) in late summer (SOLe PERtuis) targeting sole juveniles with a small beam trawl until subtidal zone (<1.50 m). Some of the results obtained in this report confirm previous studies, such as, among others, that more than 80% YOY (G0) occupy muddy or sandy mud bottom at a depth less than 5 m, or that there is a relative correlation between large rainfall in the spring, river flows and abundance of G0 in nursery.   However in the Pertuis Breton this correlation is little expressed by an extension of...

Le chalutage à perche ArchiMer
Jean-pierre, Dugauquier.
This study on pole trawling was done with the goal of giving some clarification about a theoretically prohibited fishing technique that is little used in France. However, fishermen from some countries routinely practice pole trawling authorised at the European level, which poses a few problems from the point of view of French regulations, and it is on an exempt basis that this technique is used by some boats in Brittany and Normandy, but the only large fleet that is practising pole trawling intensively by using boat booms is based in Dunkerque's harbour. It is the reason for which we studied the Dunkerque fleet's activity and operation; the technical aspect of the trawl was described at length. The contentious situation brought on by the practise of this...

Hake catchability by the French trawler fleet in the Bay of Biscay: estimating technical and biological components ArchiMer
Mahevas, Stephanie; Trenkel, Verena; Doray, Mathieu; Peyronnet, Arnaud.
Several factors affect trawl catchability: (i) gear and vessel technical characteristics, (ii) anthropogenic factors, and (iii) biological factors. The objectives of this study were to assess the relative contribution of each factor to variations in hake (Merluccius merluccius) landings by the French trawler fleet operating on the shelf of the northern Bay of Biscay (ICES Subdivision VIIIa). Using generalized linear models, the impact of technical and anthropogenic factors was evaluated using landings per unit effort (lpue) obtained from logbooks. Variations in hake lpue were explained primarily by anthropogenic factors. For studying the biological components of catchability, the results of a scientific trawl survey in July 2006 involving three similar...
