Do the Principles of Ecological Restoration Cover EU LIFE Nature Cofunded Projects in Denmark? Ecology and Society
Morsing, Jonas; Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, University of Copenhagen; nkx236@alumni.ku.dk; Frandsen, Sally Ida; Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, University of Copenhagen;; Vejre, Henrik; Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, University of Copenhagen; hv@life.ku.dk; Raulund-Rasmussen, Karsten; Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, University of Copenhagen; krr@life.ku.dk.
Ecological restoration is becoming a main component in nature management; hence, its definitions and interpretations of the underlying principles are widely discussed. In Denmark, restoration has been implemented for decades, and the LIFE Nature program has contributed to several large-scale projects. Our aim was to indicate tendencies in Danish nature policy by analyzing a representative sample of nature management projects. Using qualitative document analyses of official reports, we investigated how well 13 LIFE Nature cofinanced projects undertaken in Denmark fit with the principles of ecological restoration, as formulated in the nine attributes of the Society for Ecological Restoration’s Primer on Ecological Restoration, and based on the five...

Benchmarking the Optimal Time Alignment of Tsunami Waveforms in Nonlinear Joint Inversions for the Mw 8.8 2010 Maule (Chile) Earthquake ArchiMer
Romano, F.; Lorito, S.; Lay, T.; Piatanesi, A.; Volpe, M.; Murphy, Shane; Tonini, R..
Finite-fault models for the 2010 Mw 8.8 Maule, Chile earthquake indicate bilateral rupture with large-slip patches located north and south of the epicenter. Previous studies also show that this event features significant slip in the shallow part of the megathrust, which is revealed through correction of the forward tsunami modeling scheme used in tsunami inversions. The presence of shallow slip is consistent with the coseismic seafloor deformation measured off the Maule region adjacent to the trench and confirms that tsunami observations are particularly important for constraining far-offshore slip. Here, we benchmark the method of Optimal Time Alignment (OTA) of the tsunami waveforms in the joint inversion of tsunami (DART and tide-gauges) and geodetic...

Multi-Period Emissions Trading in the Electricity Sector - Winners and Losers AgEcon
Bode, Sven.
Emission trading has become recently more and more import in environmental regulation. In the context of controlling greenhouse gas emissions, the directive on a Europewide trading scheme for large immobile sources may be perceived as one of the most important milestones in recent years. Prior to its start, however, a number of very specific design features have to be agreed upon. In the political discussion, the question of how to allocate emission rights is considered as one of the most important issues. So far, a distribution (almost) free of charge is the option of choice. An aspect that has interestingly attracted little attention in the past is the question of how to allocate emission rights over time. This may for example be done on the basis of a...

New Zealand Agriculture Policy Review AgEcon
Gilmour, Brad; Gurung, Rajendra Kumar.
In 1984, New Zealand introduced important policy reforms in order to address major macroeconomic and fiscal imbalances. New Zealand's support to agricultural producers rapidly decreased from 30 percent of the value of production to about 2 percent, and has remained the lowest among OECD economies since that time. After a difficult transition, the removal of subsidies resulted in a more diversified and competitive rural economy in New Zealand; total factor productivity growth has been roughly 2.5 percent annually since 1984, compared to roughly 1.5 percent in the prereform period. This Policy Review focuses on agricultural policy today and how New Zealand is supporting the agricultural sector now without resorting to subsidies. It describes the policy New...

The International Quality Systems Environment AgEcon
Krieger, Stephanie; Schiefer, Gerhard.
Enterprises in the agri-food sector are increasingly confronted with the need to adjust their production processes and operations to the requirements of quality systems and to integrate these requirements into their own individual integrated process management system. Integra- tion efforts are further aggravated by correlations of quality system requirements with other process related requirements. First initiatives have started to benchmark the requirements of different quality systems to have an analyse about the level of the same requirements. Output of this article will be a description of an advisory model (database model with computerized support), which presents a support tool for the implementation of quality, environ- mental and occupational...

THE PERFORMANCE OF AGRICULTURAL MARKET ADVISORY SERVICES IN MARKETING WHEAT AgEcon
Jirik, Mark A.; Irwin, Scott H.; Good, Darrel L.; Jackson, Thomas E.; Martines-Filho, Joao Gomes.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of agricultural market advisory services in marketing wheat. Two key performance questions are addressed: 1) Do market advisory services, on average, outperform an appropriate wheat market benchmark? and 2) Do market advisory services exhibit persistence in their wheat performance from year-to-year? Market advisory service recommendations for wheat are available from the AgMAS Project for the 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998 marketing years. At least 20 advisory programs are included for each year. Tests of pricing performance relative to a market benchmark are based on the proportion of programs exceeding the benchmark price and the average percentage difference between the net price of advisory...

Per Unit Costs to Own and Operate Farm Machinery AgEcon
Beaton, Aaron J.; Dhuyvetter, Kevin C.; Kastens, Terry L.; Williams, Jeffery R..
With increasingly thin margins and new technologies, it is important that farm managers know their cost of field operations on a per unit basis (e.g., acre, ton, bale). Accurate per unit costs give confidence when constructing enterprise budgets and evaluating new technologies, such as no-till. Custom rates are often used as a proxy for per unit costs; however, this research, using entropy and jackknife estimation procedures, found that custom rates understate total ownership and operating costs by approximately 25% for an average Kansas farm. Estimates from these models are then used to benchmark actual costs against expected cost.

Technical performance of milk producers in the state of Goiás , Brazil, in the short and long terms R. Bras. Zootec.
Sousa,Lucas Oliveira de; Campos,Samuel Alex Coelho; Gomes,Marília Fernandes Maciel.
The objective of this study was to identify groups of technologically homogeneous milk producers in the State of Goiás and calculate the gains for inefficient producers, considering the ones of better performance (benchmarks) with the same technological level, i.e., in the short term, and the benchmarks in higher technological level, i.e., in the long term. Multivariate statistical analysis techniques were used for the formation of homogeneous producer groups and multi-stage model of data envelopment analysis (DEA) for the estimation of efficiency scores and identification of benchmarks. The results indicated the formation of four groups of producers and indicate that, on average, the dairy farming in Goiás presents mainly characteristics of traditional,...

Identificação e quantificação de indicadores-referência de sistemas de produção de leite R. Bras. Zootec.

Association between technical and economic performance indexes and dairy farm profitability R. Bras. Zootec.
Ferrazza,Rodrigo de Andrade; Lopes,Marcos Aurélio; Prado,Danielle Gonçalves de Oliveira; Lima,Renato Ribeiro de; Bruhn,Fabio Raphael Pascoti.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the determinant profitability indexes of typical dairy farms located in Brazil. The empirical sample included detailed technical and financial information of 61 Brazilian dairy farms across a longitudinal data set (10 years). Numerous technical and economic indexes were estimated, and Pearson’s correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the relationship between each index and profitability. After selecting the significant indexes, regression equations were generated to determine the relationship between each index and profitability. The results of the analysis revealed significant interactions between different combinations of technical and financial indexes. Milk production per lactating cow and area were...

Identification and quantification of benchmarks of milk production systems in Minas Gerais R. Bras. Zootec.
Camilo Neto,Matozalém; Campos,José Maurício de Souza; Oliveira,André Soares de; Gomes,Sebastião Teixeira.
The objective of this study was to identify and quantify benchmarks of milk production systems. The technological profile and size, livestock and economic indicators of sixteen farms in the region of Triângulo Mineiro were analyzed. Indicators correlated with rate of return on capital (RRC) were identified and quantified in four scenarios of RRC (6, 8, 10 and 12% per year). The correlated indicators and their respective values in the four scenarios were: land (99, 90, 81 and 73 ha); relation of total cows in lactation (74, 77, 79 and 82%); lactating cows per area (0.89; 0.99; 1.11 and 1.22 cows/ha); milk production per lactating cow (12.04; 13.00; 13.96 and 14.92 liters/cow/day); milk production per total cows (9.19; 10.23; 11.27 and 12.31 liters/cow/day);...
