Respiratory activity and pigment metabolism in fresh-cut beet roots treated with citric acid Horticultura Brasileira
Kluge,Ricardo A; Vitti,Maria Carolina D; Sasaki,Fabiana F; Jacomino,Angelo P; Moretti,Celso L.
Beet roots cv. Early Wonder were graded for firmness, color and size, and were peeled inside a cold room (10ºC). Roots were then shredded (2 mm thick), sanitized for 6 minutes (NaClO/200 mg L-1), rinsed and centrifuged. Fresh-cut beet roots were then treated for 5 minutes with citric acid in the following concentrations: 0 (control), 500; 1,000; 1,500 and 2,000 mg L-1. The material was centrifuged again, placed in trays, wrapped with PVC plastic film, and stored at 5ºC and 85-90% HR for 10 days. Every two days, treatments were analyzed for respiratory activity and betacyanin and betaxanthin contents. The application of citric acid caused the reduction of respiratory rate in the fresh-cut tissue. In the second day of storage, control showed the highest...

Pigment production and growth of Alternanthera plants cultured in vitro in the presence of tyrosine BABT
Kleinowski,Alítcia Moraes; Brandão,Isabel Rodrigues; Einhardt,Andersom Milech; Ribeiro,Márcia Vaz; Peters,José Antonio; Braga,Eugenia Jacira Bolacel.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of tyrosine on the in vitro growth and the production of the betacyanin pigment in Alternanthera philoxeroides and A. tenella. Nodal segments were inoculated in MS medium containing different concentrations of tyrosine (0, 25, 50 and 75 μM), and the number of sprouts and buds, height, root length, fresh matter of shoots and roots and betacyanin content were evaluated. In A. philoxeroides , the highest production of betacyanin (51.30 mg 100 g-1 FM) was in the stems with the addition of approximately 45 μM tyrosine, while the increase in the leaves was proportional to the tyrosine concentration, and the best average was obtained with a tyrosine concentration of 75 μM (15.32 mg 100 g-1 FM). Higher...

Developmental effects of additional ultraviolet a radiation, growth regulators and tyrosine in Alternanthera brasiliana (L.) Kuntze cultured in vitro BABT
Silva,Nina Cláudia Barboza; Macedo,Andrea Furtado; Lage,Celso Luís Salgueiro; Esquibel,Maria Apparecida; Sato,Alice.
Tissue cultures of Alternanthera brasiliana (L.) Kuntze were treated with different growth regulators (Kinetin and 2,4-D), tyrosine and Ultraviolet A radiation (UV-A; 320 - 400 nm) to investigate their effects on development and pigment production. Nodal segments of plantlets grown from seeds were inoculated in all tested media and different light conditions. After eight weeks, this material was used to evaluate biomass, chlorophyll and betacyanin production. The Murashige and Skoog (MS) + kinetin medium resulted in development of approximately four shoots/explant. This medium plus white light was the best combination for micropropagation with the highest rooting percentage and betacyanin production. Plantlets grown under UV-A illumination reduced biomass...
